As a boarding student who attended this school, I have to say I'm pretty surprised by all the negative comments about the boarding program. Personally I loved it, and I found the experience to be extremely helpful when I got to College. Also, even though I'm Protestant, I didn't fell at all excluded by the Catholic community. The vast majority of the people I met there were very kind, and I would strongly recommend this school to anyone considering attending.

Tons of Catholicism, but ZERO Christianity. Horrible boarding program. A new headmaster is BADLY needed. Too much nepotism. Horrible people in general.

I've lived in about 10 places and have sent my several children to a variety of schools: public, parochial, homeschooling, virtual academy, and independent Catholic. My wife and I agree that Donahue Academy is the best school we've encountered so far and one of the best we know about. Others must agree, because people who can move, do move, from all around the country to send their kids here. It's important, but not so easy, to know the kids and the parents of those kids at your school--and yet that is the case at the Donahue. The academic standards are high. The teachers are terrific. There is a genuine community around the school, with lots of neat events, like the Steak Cookoff or the trip to the NASCAR championship, or the Scholar Bowl events. (You should disregard that obviously disgruntled parent who wrote the 1 star review. I have no idea how a problem with a boarding situation translates in that person's mind into a problem with the school.)

As the parent of a Junior enrolled in the boarding program, I cannot say I have ever witnessed a place so bias and so closed-minded towards people outside the school's small community. The boarding program was impossible to cope with, practically no communication from the school, and towards the end of the year, the boarding students had no reliable source of food, I kept hearing reports of my son going to bed hungry. The faculty were unwilling to help the boarders fit in, and as a result, I strongly recommend looking for alternate schools if at all possible.

My children have excelled here. We are very satisfied with the academic rigor, small class sizes and respectful atmoshphere. We would recommend this school whole-heartedly.

About these ratings

The Community Rating is the school’s average rating from its community members (e.g., parents, students, and school staff). The highest possible rating is five stars; the lowest is one star.

We currently do not have any test score information for this school. Unlike public schools, private schools are not always required to report data about their schools or not required to take the same tests as public schools. Many private schools take different standardized tests; however, that information is often made available only to families of enrolled students. We strive to acquire additional private school data whenever available.
