My daughter's school (SLHE) has an incredible ESE department with whom I have been so impressed! The ESE teachers go above and beyond to embrace my daughter & provide her with the services she needs while at the same time "pushing" her to do her best. They have taken the time to get to know her quite well & she LOVES her school. They say "it takes a village" but SLHE has gone above & beyond to make sure my daughter's "village" is made up of the perfect balance of teachers to set her up for success! If you want to see how a PUBLIC school does Special Ed the right way, check out SLHE! Most importantly, I think the key to your child succeeding in ANY school is parental INVOLVEMENT & ADVOCACY! "The buck stops with the parent" no matter where your child attends school!

This school is FANTASTIC! We moved from a different area in Florida where we had our daughter in private school & were reluctant to the idea of "public school" especially given the fact our daughter has some "special needs." But we are into our 3rd year & could not be happier! The teachers & administration are wonderful to work with. They want the very best for ALL students! My advice is to simply involve yourself in the school (even if it's just a couple of hours a year). The PTA is not "demanding" of your time & getting involved is easy! I would not trade schools for anything... ESPECIALLY if you have a child in the special needs program! The level of excellence at Spessard in this specific area is one of a kind!

SLHE is a very good school. They engage and challenge my child academically and parent involvement is welcomed. Administration is the best in the county. However, SOME of the teachers are very rude and unprofessional. I was warned by other parents in the county who opted to have their children in other schools because of this issue.

About the tests

In 2013-2014 Florida used the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT 2.0) to test students in grades 3 through 10 in reading, 3 through 8 in math, in grades 5 and 8 in science, and in grades 4, 8, and 10 in writing. The FCAT 2.0 is a standards-based test, which means it measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Florida. The FCAT 2.0 has 5 achievement levels, with level 1 being the lowest and level 5 the highest. Florida considers scores of level 3 and higher to be on or above grade level. The goal is for all students to score at or above level 3.

About the tests

Florida uses School Grades to measure the overall performance of a school each year on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT). Each school is assigned a letter grade (A-F) based on three criteria: the overall performance on the FCAT, the percentage of eligible students who took the test, and whether or not students made progress in reading and math. The School Grades are calculated by adding points earned from each of the performance criteria listed above.
