Charter schools are one option for parents in terms of school choice. It meets the needs of some students but not all. Pro: small size (325 est), faster car rider, staggered dismissal, above average test scores, later start for K-5, school chooses own curriculum, enrolls K-6 currently, multiple enrichment activities, high parent involvement, certified teachers, some oversight by Palm Beach County School District, security fence, before/aftercare, two playgrounds, pull out ESE/gifted/ESOL, programs/fieldtrips. orientation, school info by email Con: No transportation, no nurse/clinic, Legally enforceable contract for required volunteer hours, uniform costs, fees, lots of fundraising/donations, limited oversight by Palm Beach County, limited chain of command by charter board (on your own with problems), lack space, no media special, most enrichment activities are fee based, teach to the test, profit based school, limited materials/supplies, higher than average supply costs, limited access to online textbooks, standard bullying issues, lots of homework, security issues, no beg year meet & greet, limited /no phone contact w/teacher, lottery, yearly RE-registration, lack full diversity
Somerset Boca is great for my kids. They both love their teachers and are learning a lot. I know the teachers are challenging them and they are growing. They were not in the same class as their best friends from last year, but they have made new friends. They both love their specials too, PE, Music, Spanish and Art are their favorite every day. This school really encourages and nurtures every student.
Very disappointed with this school. On the surface the academics look good but the kids are not getting the basic skills overall. It falls on the parents to actually teach the basic skills and the schools supplements. The facilities and supplies are lacking. The major focus is on fundraising and donations instead of educating the child. The head of the school is lacking the background experience to successfully push academics but is schooled in the economic part. The curriculum is a free for all with no real organization between grade levels. The school is smaller and therefore the car rider line is better but class sizes are still large. There is no real Science magnet aspect. This is one option for parents. Also, there is a good cost for uniforms, supplies, donations, fundraising, fees, and providing your own transportation. If you want average academics this is a good choice but if you are looking for a school that does not teach to the test and is strong in basic skills this is not it. But, then again the teaching to the test has become the standard. Lastly, even with the added fence security is lacking.
The warmest, friendliest office staff. Ms. Michelle is super knowledgeable and professional and Ms. Diana so nice and always smiling. I love the warmth they provided the school.
I am thrilled with Somerset Academy Boca!! It is a relief to be out of the local overcrowded public school . My son is excited to go to school every day and says every day is more fun than the next! The principal , staff, and teachers are wonderful and always available . Communication and social activities are a perfect 10! The children have recess every day and can play school sports after school. The learning is first rate with individual attention given to each student. I am so glad we switched to Somerset, can't say enough good things!
I am so grateful for Somerset Academy. Regular public schools are way too large. This small school makes my child and myself feel part of a family. The teachers and staff and in constant communication with the parents. They have family events, picnics, galas and great afterschool activities. So many things never seen in a regular public school. It has been such a smooth transition for my daughter who left a great religious pre-school to start kindergarten there. This school gives the feel of a private school. All the parents are involved and get to know each other. Security is no longer an issue as the school has an office there all day. The only thing is that being a new school they need more supplies and maybe more outdoor space but other than that I would not trade it for any for those large public schools, not even the A rated ones that are in Boca and people fight to get into.
LOVE IT!! EXCELLENT SCHOOL! Somerset schools are high achievement schools and now I know why. The school is small, well managed and provide a very positive environment and a sense of community. The staff and teachers are professional and warm. Parents are very involved and caring. Good education and the aftercare enrichment program is fun and dynamic. Aftercare kids have many activities to choose from: yoga, zumba, music, musical theater, arts and more. Security is now improved with a new fence and a security officer there all day.
I love the way they involve parent in the every day activities , it feel like a home away from home. My girls feel safe , well treat and they have individuals asignments and homework ....I like that
Somerset Boca is a great option for families looking for a smaller school feel without going private. There is a family vibe and families actually have a say in what happens at the school. The staff knows every kid and every kid has an opportunity to shine there. We have had a great experience and are very thankful that Somerset opened in our community.
I took a star off for the rude office staff. One was nice but the rest are too busy to be nice I guess.
The teachers are wonderful! However, front office staff is very rude, principle is not professional and the security is horrible.
Just finished kindergarten and we are happy that we found this school. We love the small school atmosphere. Out kindergarten teacher was great, the staff is great, the principal is really good. Security needs to be improved and the resources in general seem to be very limited.
Somerset Boca has been wonderful and life changing! My son really struggled in Kindergarten at an A rated school, and seemed to "fall through the cracks" and kids that learn from different teaching methods/ learning styles, dont fit in the "box" of mainstream public education. Somerset teachers, teach to different learning styles/needs (tactile, visual, etc). Our teachers and staff are dedicated and amazing. We also have a daughter in 2nd. They are both doing outstanding academically as well as in their emotional development and socialization skills. My children have found a renewed sense of self-confidence and really enjoy going to school each day. This school addresses the needs of its students, above and beyond academic. Love this school!
My wife and I took a chance and decided to have our children leave their A rated school here in Boca last August. We couldn't be happier with our decision. Our kids have flourished in the small environment Somerset offers. Highly recommend.
I have a 2nd grader at Somerset Academy, she loves the school. Her teacher, Ms. Bowman is a sweetheart and is always willing to take that extra time to go over thing my daughter doesn't understand. The principal is very nice and approachable. The front office staff is very professional. I love the parent involvement and the small social events they have. It is a small school so everybody knows everybody which doesn t happen in a big public school. They have a lot of extracurricular activities but perhaps should invest in more PE equipment. My only concern is the security in the school, I hope the fence is installed ASAP other than that, Somerset is a great school!
I have a 2nd grader and 4th grader at Somerset Academy Boca. We moved over from another pubic school here in Boca due to its overcrowding. We are thrilled with Somerset. Some of the benefits of this school are directly related to the smallness of the school, and the parent involvement that is not only accepted but encouraged by the faculty and staff. Also, although the school we moved from is highly regarded in the community, it was teach - test, teach- test, teach-test. At Somerset the students are required to demonstrate their knowledge in many other, more creative ways... powerpoint presentations, reports, experiments... even extra credit assignment opportunities. Great teachers, wonderful, accessible principal. Happy kids!!
The academics are ok, science is almost nonexistent and its supposed to be a science magnet school. 1st grade teacher is unorganized and talks disrespectfully to parents and kids. The biggest problem is there is NO security and the school and principal only make excuses. They have been promising a "security fence" all year stating that it is being held up by permitting since August (its February). No one walks the halls despite claims. I have walked on and off this campus without notice more times than I can count. Now, they are wasting their money on a company to make security recommendations. Seems to be for PR. The security problem is there are multiple points of entry and no security personal, fence, cameras, etc. They should take that money and get security. The temple on the same campus has their own security so obviously they are concerned enough to pay for it. There is a police officer directing traffic 2 x per day for 30 min. The school does not have any resources from their operating board and depends solely on parent donations. They do not even have a school clinic, PE equipment or art equipment- playgrounds are a mess. Could be a great school if they had any resources.
We have compared my son's work that he is doing at school against other area elementary schools and his work is ahead of what others are doing in thes same grade. My child is being challenged. Somerset responds to parent requests and we are very happy with our child's progress and workload. In regards to security, yes I do feel they could do a better job and I do hope that something is done about that in the near future as promised. If security is improved, I feel Somerset is a 5 star school that is great for that child that requires the extra challenge. By the way, my child is in first grade and my child likes the teacher and loves school. My child's only complaint sometimes is in regards to too much work.....that is not a bad thing. It's not just busy work....it's work that a child learns from. I would rather this complaint than my child being bored. I love it! Best decision I ever made!!! A lot of parent involvement!!!! Love the extracurricular programs also....sports program, art enrichment. amongst others..awesome!!! Before enrolling your child check it out and make sure it's for your child.
