Grandview Preparatory School 4

When I take the time to review things, I take it very seriously. No school is all good or bad. We have had an overall very good experience here (really a 4.5). Administration is proactive and very involved. They know who each kid is--your child is not just a number. As a private school they need to solicit money (or raise fees) but they do it appropriately, respectfully, and creatively (e.g., a lottery to win free tuition). Academics focus on long term projects, student led learning, creativity and problem-solving rather than rote learning and homework...and the research backs them up that this is better for the children long run. I have a pretty good handle on what my friends' kids are doing in other schools and in most areas I think they are way ahead, but lower school math does seem to be behind. Having only one teacher per year has the positive effect of making it a small family-like environment--but if there is an issue with the teacher (which we have this year) we have to face either disrupting our child by switching schools or just trying to make it through the year. In a larger school we might just switch classes. We've had such great interactions with the caring people there but this one teacher really is not always handling her class effectively and is definitely playing favorites with kids and treating them differently. Its sad, because my review last year was a 5 (or more!). The school has immense promise & a worthy mission but needs to be more on top of what the teachers are doing (not just what they *say* they're doing). However, this is our unique experience & I'm looking forward to returning to an unqualified 5 next year....when friends ask me, I say YES this is a great school.

Ms. Haydn is a really outstanding teacher and brings her love to science to all the kids. Ms. DeStefano is compassionate and caring in her administrative role and really on top of the socio-emotional needs of the kids.

In most ways, yes. It does take a while to address peer to peer issues.

Grandview focuses on growing the whole individual, with character development woven throughout the educational experience. It is so much more than just a school, it is a vibrant community. We have four children in the lower school and are in our second year of attendance. Grandview has met the needs of all of our children, as very unique individuals in both character and educational needs. And, as a parent, I always feel welcome to participate in activities or discuss any needs that I may have for my family. My children only complain that the school year is too short! It's true that Grandview's approach is different but that is what attracted us to the school. It's about nurturing the love of learning, individuality, and innovation. It's about challenging yourself in ways you never envisioned. It's about thinking differently and passionately to drive your own success and happiness. It's about embracing the world around you.

There are a myriad of community building programs that all students participate in throughout the year. I spend a lot of time at the school and witness a lot of respect from the upper school students to the lower school students. Team building (of all ages/grades) is an important part of the experience.

Completely agree. The monthly character theme is woven throughout the lower school's day. It is a apparent in how the children treat each other that their is a lot of respect.

Love them!!!! They are warm and make learning fun!!!! The kids don't even realizing how much they are learning sometimes. All of the teachers are very accessible, either through email or in-person.

There is more to life than just school, and Grandview understands this. It is learning the discipline of homework without pains of it. Some days are heavier than others but it is manageable with outside activities and still allows for play time at home.

The teachers motivate the children to do their best. My children have a ton of respect for their teachers and always feel a strong sense of accomplishment after taking something to the next level. There are no tears or stress. Instead, they simply enjoy building a strong sense of self, as they deepen the relationships that helped them get there.
