I have to agree with the post from August. My daughter is also in the 6th grade @ McLane. Every morning when she is getting ready for school, she gets sick. I really think it's her nerves. Back when i was in Middle School, there wasn't much bullying to worry about, nor was there so much crime. I think many kids are afraid to go to school nowadays....to the point it's making them ill. My daughter has asked me several time to be home schooled, but her dad & I work, so we can't do it. I want her to love school !

McLane is a school on the move. An emphasis on high expectations has begun to transform this school into a middle school to be proud of. Great work by the principal and staff in creating an environment of respect and achievement.

My son just completed 6th grade in the Robotics Academy at Mclane. I can't say enough good things about the teachers in the robotics program and the standards they set for their students. The rest of the school, however, is in complete chaos. There are 200 students in each P.E. class and 4 teachers. When my son was grabbed by the throat and slammed into a wall 1 of the coaches told him that if he didn't know the name of the person responsible there was nothing the coach could do. This was two weeks into 6th grade. Later in the year my son witnessed a massive food fight in the cafeteria that resulted in the suspension of 40 students. Worst of all was the day my son came to me and said he had seen one of his female classmates surrounded by a group of boys who proceeded to touch her inappropriately. This was in an overcrowded elective classroom, when he asked her why she didn't tell the teacher she told him that it was a daily occurrence and wouldn't stop. not know his attacker's name the coach couldn't help him. That was two weeks into sixth grade. Later in the year he witnessed a huge food fight in the cafeteria that resulted in the suspension of 40 students. Worst of a

I worked at this school approx. 5 years ago. It was horrible. The students bullied other students and also teachers! I never had a student theaten me before. When I brought it up to administration they almost laughed in my face. I've been teaching for 12 years and I like to run a "tight ship" when it comes to discipline but when administration doesn't back teachers up, teachers really have no power. I truly feel bad for the students who want to learn and for all teachers that teach there! I have moved on to teach at a great school now and I beleive I am successful! I still tell my horror stories of this awful school and probably will until I'm 90!

Teachers don't care about the students. My daughter was a student from 6 to 8 grade and the homework's were very minimal and almost none at all. school needs improvement starting with some teachers. Her performance in elementary school was more demanding than McLane. school.

I just transferred from private school.. I was told how bad this school was, but.. Honestly, its a better school than Imannuel. Im in 7th grade and today was my first day, and I loved it ! the kids were nice and helpful.. At Imannuel it was hard to make friends because it was so small so if one girl didn't like you, the other 6 didn't.. I think it depends on the student.. but i felt at home, and all the nerves went away, yes all schools have flaws, but for as big as this school is, its pretty good. I don't plan on leaving :) and i look forward to tomorrow :)

I moved to Florida from Mississippi about 4 months ago. I'm a student, in 8th grade, and I love McLane. Yes, there are fights about every week, and some students are rude and disrespectful. But, my teachers are very helpful, and I've gotten better grades here than I did at my old school. The principals are not very strict, and they know how to handle every situation. The school may seem bad from the outside, but it really isn't. I've made some good friends here, and I don't plan on leaving anytime soon.

This review is intended for the STEM Robotics Institute only. I have no real experience with the AVID program, or the school itself, outside of this program. The STEM Robotics program is a school within a school. The program is second to none. The Robotics program is a full 3 years, not one or two semesters as in other schools. McLane fields teams that compete in Robotics competitions locally, state-wide, regionally, nationally and internationally. McLane's Robotics teams have taken 1st place at the National Robotics Championships, and 3rd place at the World Robotics Championships, the past 2 years in a row. That should tell you something about how good the program is. Yet many locals don't even know the program exists. If you're a student in this program, you take all of your classes with other students in the program. My son says he has seen some minor violence at the school, but nothing of any real import. Kids will be kids, and even the best schools can't eliminate bullying, or altercations completely. I wish some of the teachers would do a better job of keeping EDLINE up to date. I can't fix something in my childs progress, if I don't know there's a problem.

My son and daughter were just enrolled in this school we moved here from Strongsville OH and this school and it's staff are horrible it needs to be shut down. The princaple prejudice and my daughter had her phone stolen out of her book bag and when I went in for a meeting he threw me out of the office and told me his job is not to protect the children he is just the principle and then called the sheriff to remove me from his office. I am done they will not be back to this horrible school I am pulling them now and will go as high as I have to this school needs to be shut down the the principle fired for the way he treats people the staff are so rude and disrespectful. I will not allow a school or its officals to mistreat my children.

My son attends the robotics program here. He absolutly loves the program and his main teacher Mr Wilson. Unfortunately, this amazing and beneficial program was set up in a dorrible school. It is the second week of school and they've already madre 9 (nine) arrests! My son's been in three separate altercations; thrown against the wall, punched etc If there wasn't a robotics (school within a school) I'd have pulled him from this school back in the 2011-12 school year. The entire school should be gutted and rebuilt with a sharper office staff, better communication between the office, student affairs, teachers, and parents.

My son went to this school from 2009-june 2011 he did 6th and 7th grade here. IT WAS HORRIBLE. He was always in advance classes even at this school but his grades dropped to C's and D's even F's. I'm a very involved parent and use to go there for observations and was very disappointed with the teaching. There was only One teacher who truly is Amazing that is Mrs. Matthews. She really cares about the students and encourages them to focus on their education. I even went to speak to the 7th grade guidance counselor and she did not care to try to assist me in helping my son. I finally moved and he now attends an A school and by the way he gets A's and B's and is even in the AVID program. The school needs more professionals like Mrs. Matthews who really truly care, strict and fight to educate the children.

This school should be shut down! No organization at all. I find the staff to be very rude and ignorant. I've never seen adults act more like children then the students themselves. I just finished my 8th grade year, and i'm happy to be leaving. Everyday, there a re fights most of the time, and it got so bad this year, on the last week, they had to have more than 4 cops roaming around the school! I've also heard stories about kids smoking week a couple days ago and they got arrested. Bullying is a regular basis at this school, and they will make fun of your kid for no reason. sure i'll miss all my friends there, but i'm glad i'm done with that bad school! At least it's better these last two years than it was 6th grade. I must give Mr. Oliver his props for that. But, this year was cool, and now i heard that MMS, is getting uniforms, lol! Anyways, 3 years done, off to high school. (:

I go to McLane and have since sixth grade, but I am in the 'Robotics Institue'. It is a choice program situated in McLane. It is a great program, and I feel as well protected as I could in McLane. The school has an excellent orchestra, but not much else. The are almost no sports, and club day is a joke. Mr.Oliver has a different approach than Mr.Ellis. He is stricter, but it really has done nothing. Some of the advanced teachers are good, and the Robotics Institute and AVID are excellent programs. All schools have fights, but smart kids stay away form them. If your kid does this, he will be fine. If your kid is not going into Robotics or AVID, I highly reccommend going to another school, as there are better options. **My rating is for the school, not Robotics or AVID

I apologize to all if McLane Middle is your child's neighborhood school...Thank goodness for school choice. This school needs to be closed down. Most of the students there are out of control. It is really affecting the students that WANT to learn. The sad thing is some of the teachers "Don't Care" about the safety of the students. They really need better leaders in that school starting with administration.

My children go to mclane middle school and I think that it is one of the worst middle schools in hillsborough county. My children are supposed to be in an advanced/accelerated program and they bring home almost no homework. I come from a school district that took pride in learning; from the principals to the teachers and students. I have never seen teachers in this district that prides themselves on dressing as if they were going to the beach or the park. I have never been involved with a school district that allows so many 'teacher planning' days and the students have such low testing scores. If I had the money to send them to a private school, I would. these kids can't even bring home schoolbooks until they reach a certain grade level, in the meantime the parentsdont have a printed resource that would assist with at home studying. We are new to the state and was not aware of McLane's reputation. However, my son just started 6th grade this wk w/ advanced honors and so far he loves it. I am impressed with their gifted programs that they do have. I am disappointed though with their lack of extra curricular activities (ie sports). But, he's happy so I'm staying positive until I hear otherwise. I have also been volunteering there so that I myself can observe first hand. I encourage other parents to join the PTSA and be involved w/ their child's school.

This school had the most events 4 students in hillsbrough county. Already had a field trip goin 2 a college. Some people were complaining that items stolen. In the first place parents shouldnt let children bring or buy a kid a $400.00 dollar ipod. Last this school has honnor programs for kids that have great teachers. Yes, the teadhers do care! I was a teacher at McLane last year. I tried everything I knew how to do and consulted every resource I could find to try to correct the situation, to no avail. Last year, the teachers, en masse, approached the county, demanding an intervention. The intervention was cursory, and ineffective. It was my first year of public school teacher, and possibly my last. I am a good teacher, and my academic credentials are impeccable. I've taught college, previously. I do care! The teachers receive no assistance or support from the administration and are blamed for everything. I couldn't teach at McLane, and I couldn't keep my kids safe. I quit last summer and sent a five page, single spaced missive to the school superintendant, Mary Ellen Elia, detailing what I had witnessed and experienced. The principal responded by bad mouthing me all over the county.

The only reason why I'm still going here is because I like a few of my teachers and it's in my district.Students will stop in the middle of the walkway, run around and do whatever they want to. Oh what, they get ISS? Big whoop! That doesn't change them, I hear what the students say, they think its funny! Give them ISS,a referall, suspension! What do they care? We are shocked at how pathetic this school is. Administration doesn't care about the kids, whether it's their education or safety. Where is the support in education for our students for this school? Our son was an honor student before coming to McLane. We've been asking the school for assistance & to be kept informed since last school year. We are STILL waiting for return calls from LAST year. This is NOT a safe school and my son will NOT get the education he DESERVES unless we pull him out of McLane! Every child deserves an education! Do something about this before it's too late!

This school is totally out of control. I have been there many times during the day,and seen this first hand. There is zero parent involvement. It is my opinion that these teachers do not care one way or another what happens to the children, they are just there for a pay check. The principal shows no sign of real leadreship to pass on to the kids. I could really go bad forever but there is not enough space.

My experience with McLane was shocking to me. The school has no control over the students. These are suppose to be educators that teach kids not only from a book, but lead by example. If you do not have proper leadership, guidance, and resources to deal with the social issues and the difficulty of this age group, how can you expect a child to conduct themselves as though they are in a learning environment when they are surrounded by chaos? Why are they not trying to get the community/parents envolved to work on a solution? Do they care?

This is my son's first year at this school. He has three EXCELLENT teachers, one average one, and one that shouldn't be a teacher. Despite our complaints and those of several other parents, our requests to move our child from this classroom and into another was not honored by the school. The school seems to be handcuffed by district policy and lack of resources to either assist this teacher improve or be removed. I believe that overall, the staff is caring and tries to do what is right for the kids, but lacking in resources and support from 'the system'.

My son has a learning disability and was given an IEP from his elementary school that went ignored for 3 months at McLane. He was placed in regular classes and received poor grades. I called a meeting, and none of the teachers showed up. We've tried to get into other schools, but all are full. If we don't get him into another school by this August, we will home school him. Too much violence and threats of violence, which seems to be the focus of some of the students there which goes unchecked. This school needs proper funding and training.

I am extremely dissatisfied with McLane. I am in the process of removing my child due to the multiple problems she receives here. This is an aging school that has been featured on a news program entitled 'Dirty Dining.' There are several dedicated teachers who strive to lead the pupils to excel in academics and in life. However, the school is woefully overcrowded, underfunded, and unable to provide adequate learning resources to the students. This is a school with all the problems of an inner city school and without the resources to deal with those problems.

I really don't feel that this school gives their 100% to the children, we come from a different area and the teaching ability differs from there to here. Good school, overall. Overcrowded though, not enough classrooms or textbooks. I think most of the teachers are very caring and the staff is great. They need to enforce the dress code like they promised to do at the beginning of the year. When they held parent/teacher conferences this month not many parents showed up for my daughters team. There were four teachers there from her team, each teacher had about 150 students they taught a day, only two parents showed up for the conferences and we were one of them, pitiful.

We have a study time for them after school. As parents of the children that attend this school we all have a responabilty to the school to help our children. We need the support of the teachers and the parents to make sure that our children get a good quality education. We do not need to hold the teachers at fault for all of the down falls of the children, as parents we need to make sure that our children have a study time when they come home, and to assist them with their study time. The teachers have more than a hundred students a day and we my only have two or three please help.Vsb

I find our sons teachers caring, but lacking in supplies or support. This year is difficult for everyone with all the reconstruction of the buildings. There appears to be little or no enforcement of a dress code or interventions for foul language and gestures. This should not be tolerated as it errodes the ability of the teacher to teach and other students to grow in an atmosphere conducive to education. These folks need help. Parent participation and volunteers at the school would be a start. Visit sometime and take a look at what these educators are dealing with on an everyday basis. It's a shame! The school board needs to wake-up and help.

The problem with McLane is not the staff. My son in 7th has a core of good teachers however, the school is critically over crowded and my son was robbed and a student attempted to beat him up. As a result his grade are suffering and he now says he hates school. I am looking for an alternative for my son's sake. It's a shame.

My children just started going to this school and so far I am very disappointed. There are approx. 1,600 students which is far too many. There are no text books. My children aren't learning correctly because they cannot bring home text books with them.
