I went here for 8th grade and enjoyed my year there. Being mostly a lonely student and just trying to focus on my studies; all my teachers except one were very nice and graded fairly. Art was fun, and I usually hate P.E. but this past year I liked it because they let you do so many different things. The 8th grade dance was awesome, with popular music for kids our age and a slideshow running in the background of pics of us. Lots of food and drinks for free, the only things you had to pay for was $5 for a ticket and I don;'t remember how much for pictures. 8th graders also get a graduating T-shirt with all the names of the 8th graders on the back, the t-shirt design was a drawing contest last year. We also had a field trip to Epcot for those of us with no really-bad disciplines, and you could run a fundraiser for money to go. 8th graders - as long as things stay the same, I know you'll have fun.
This is to all parents that have children going to this school or will have children going soon.. Some of the teachers in this school dont care about teaching only a paycheck. The principal Rufa is all talk and NO action so dont waste your time having a meeting with him. I also noticed they dont care for hispanics. If your child will be attending this school good luck with your teachers. There are a few teachers that are young and love to teacha few men as well but thats just a hand full of them.
I LOVE this school. It is the best school i have ever went to. I <3 WHMS!!!
i hate that school it is mean and dumb but also cool i like the teachers and students but not mr.rufa
My son is doing fantastic at this school and he enjoys all of the tachers and fellow students. This school gives students P.E. everyday, no school uniforms, and the outdoor Aviary they have is so nice. My son is an 'A' student and in 'AP' Math and LA/Reading classes. I was concerned that he would not be challenged enough, but thanks to the new highly professsional principal and her wonderful teaching staff I am very happy with our decision to keep our son at WHMS. A special thanks to Dr. Marcia Austin for starting to Rev Up the math in our county!!! My son loves it and is doing Fantastic and for those of you who have children that excel in Math & Science then you will be very pleased with the new math program she has interjected in our schools!! Thank You
My daughter has gone through middle school here and it has been an absolutely positive experience for us. The administration is very responsive to parents' concerns and I had no problems with my child's teachers or the course content. Her academic teachers as well as extra curricular teachers were supportive and encouraging. This is an excellent school.
Used to be technology person at this school. Dedicated, innovative faculty and administration who take a personal interest in each student. I would send my kids there. Great folks to work with - Teachers are not there for the money- pay and benefits in Florida schools are awful, but faculty at WHMS always give 100%. Parent involvment is strongly encouraged there. Be sure to help , not hover.
My son will be entering 8th grade this fall at WHMS and I have nothing but praise for this school, teachers, and principals. They offer a wide variety of classes and reward good behavior and grades with kayaking trips that he really loves. They have an aviary on the grounds that the students are responsible for, and use it as a teaching tool for other area elementary schools. Best of all, I feel he is safe there.
Very disappointed in this school. Having 5 children from college down to elementary school this was the most disappointing school I have ever dealt with. There are more poor teachers just there for a paycheck then teachers who care. I have waited 3 weeks for a teacher to return a phone call and some will never return phone calls. I think most teachers truly don't want parent involvement, even though they like to 'say' they do. While the main principle is great and one of the other assistant principles is a nice man and fair as well, the only female asst principle is an awful person who I truly believe could care less about anybody or anything except her paycheck. This school gets a D- from me. I am just thankful my kids wont be going there again.
My daughter is in her 8th grade year at WHMS, we will be so sad to see her leave. What a great learning experience, and not just in the classroom. There are a lot of handicapped students here, and to see them mixing easily with the regular ed students can really warm your heart. I was terrified when I dropped her off in 6th grade, but now I know she is safe everyday. The principal is awesome, clearly loves the kids but really commands respect of all. The students have built a huge bird aviary, the PE program is incredible--rock-climbing, riding bike trails, kayaking. WOW! I don't think there could be a better program anywhere (and its free!)
A++ SCHOOL!! For parents w/ IEP students, no school is better than West Hernando. After years of generic goals on IEPs and some violence at DS Parrott, we enrolled our daughter at West. She improved three grade levels in one year under Mrs. Davis/Mrs. Brown. We worked together focusing on her strengths and how to improve her 'below averages'. I could write a book on the differences. Also the kids there are better disciplined and the teachers believe in them. The teachers seem to want to be there; not just paying their bills. I can have lunch with her and not hear vulgar conversations or witness inappropriate behaviors. There are plenty of extracurriculars & team sports. Communication is fantastic between administration, teachers & parents. I get a call with the calendar of events bi-weekly; great parent coordinator. I continue to be impressed w/ this school and recommend it to all. Blessings, L.Deeter
My daughter has attended WHMS since 6th grade. I find it to be a fantastic school. The teachers contacted me immediately when they saw my daughters grades falling so quickly throughout the marking period. At the school's suggestion, my husband and I sat around a table with ALL of her teachers to get to the heart of the mattter. There are many other strong qualities to this school.
Very disapointed in this school. They have poor conflict resolution and seem to adhere to double standards. My childs IEP is routinely overlooked. He does have a few good teachers but they are overwhelmed with approx. 34 students in the classroom. I will seriously look elsewhere for educational instruction.
Our son is a 7th grader, he has had very positive experiences at W.H.M.S. for the 2nd year now, the enviroment is very calming, yet very exciting for the students, He has several teachers that are so outstanding, one being his football coach, who goes way above the call of duty every single day on that field, where he has learned so many valuable lessons in patience, respect, sportsmanship and endurance. Also the principal is very visable through out the school and at the extra activities, very hands on and involved.
