THIS IS AN UPDATED REVIEW: Athenian Academy WAS a very good (4.75 stars for the overall experience through time). However, in the past year the quality of a number of factors has significantly deteriorated. The small school environment is gone. It has become a school for profit – focusing on beefing up enrollment rather than maintaining quality education. The Foreign language instruction, Greek and Spanish is being slowly minimized. The school appears to be departing from its charter and is devaluing the Greek foundation upon which it was established. The highly qualified and experienced teachers are either gone or being forced out. The middle school does not currently have a math curriculum. The strongest point for the school had been the teachers. All of the teachers that taught my child were devoted, encouraging and good for the kids. I looked forward to more good teachers as the years went on. Many good teachers have been dismissed or resigned because they are not allowed to properly teach. The school leadership has brought in a number of “teachers” with apparently little or no qualification to teach – apparently to cut costs. The school leadership started the “Ron Clark Academy” style of educating - and doesn’t understand the system. Teachers are not allowed to communicate poor behavior to parents. Disruptive children are seldom referred to leadership and poor behavior persists. The uniform policy is not enforced beyond wearing the uniform shirt. Kids show up in dirty, torn uniforms. It does not help that the PE field is all dirt. The volunteer policy is not enforced. Parents who fail to volunteer the minimum of 20 hours per school year are not held accountable. Many parents feel the school is a baby sitter, not a school. Teachers who know how to teach and the front office staff work very hard. The leadership is the weakest link. The leadership apparently does not want strong parental participation, nor does it acknowledge parental involvement and the hard work the teachers and volunteers actually do. A really sad point is that the building is new – less than a year old - and it is filthy. It has never been properly cleaned. This school had the potential to be the best school in the county. Two years ago, I wrote this review to give 4.75 stars. Today, I would only recommend this school to a friend with reservations.
I have a K, 2nd and 6th grader at this school. All I can say is they are all thriving and love to go to school everyday!! And the environment is very family oriented, and has excellent teachers who communicate well!!!
I have a K and a 6th grader attending to Athenian Academy. I absolutely love the school and what they do with the kids. What an amazing group of teachers and school leaders. Family oriented environment, parents are very active and engaged with school activities, with a great PTA team, that organize activities throughout the school year. It is a second home where my kids and I feel safe because I know they are not only learning from the best professionals available, but they are also in a safe environment learning how to be citizens of the world. Greek and Spanish are taught!
It does. They never give up on their students and I know that for a fact because my 6th grader was doing poorly at school we got together and addressed the issue. He is much better now and his grades are much much better. He went from a F student to a B
There is an open door policy at Athenian Academy. The school leader is very approachable and listens to parents and students' concerns, taking no time to address whatever issues we might have. There is a great communication channel open between school/parents/students, we resolve everything together.Team work that benefits the school and community as whole
