Flamingo is not a bad school, it is just not a great school. It has too many kids in a class (20+ to 1 teacher) and there is no gifted program or accelerated program like Embassy lakes in Cooper city. They could do better
The teachers are mostly great and there is a high level of parent involvement. The curriculum is good, although there is too much emphasis, at times, on FCAT prep.
My daughter is 8 and she has been going to Flamingo since she was in kindergarten. She is a hyper child and all her teachers until now would make time for one on one that she needed. She can do the work but could not always comprehend. She is doing so well due to all the help the teachers gave. Also they have 2 speech pathologist at the school. The school has a high parent volunteers. Which to my surprise is more than the normal. Also the school offered reading, math and writing camps on the campus to prepare the kids for the fcat. It was great. I put my daughter in the reading and math camp and she did great. She had no propblem focusing and stating on task with the fcat. The principal always has her door open and i really mean open when you need her.
A very good school in a traditional school environment. Offers stable staff and lots of extra programs for the children.
Flamingo, like any other Fl school is mostly concerned with the FCAT and SAT scores. While this shows in their excellent performance--I think it detracts from the students overall experience. Music and art and even PE are only offered once a week , with no other extracurricular activities offered (at my sons 2nd grade level). That being said, I can say EVERY teacher, administrator and even support staff is top notch. Some have bee there for 30 years! My son has aspergers and requires a bit extra TLC and attention. I can always count on the staff to be there including a direct phone line to his teacher. It is also a uniform school, which is a nice touch.
My son attended Flamingo Elem. from K to 5th and he had 6 great years there. The teachers were always friendly, helpful and most of all with many years of teching experience. The principal and vice-principal were also great with alot of innovative ideas on having parents and children involved. Also the academic standards of the school are great. My son learned alot and was 100% prepared for Middle School. The only thing that I was worried about is the percentage of low-income families and the effect that it would have on my child but fortunately it had no effect; nonetheless I would like to see that measures will be taken to have a school regulation for short hair and no earings for boys. Overall ratings are very positive for this school.
My son will be going to Flamingo for his fourth year now. Flamingo is a great school with great staff.
