This school is a perfect example of the blind leading the blind. No one gives a rip! I am looking into where I can move my child. Horrible.
I am a sophomore in the engineering academy at the school. I have been very successful there, and it has shaped me in very positive ways. A lot of scary stories come out of there, and I admit I have my own. Some people see Deland, and automatically turn there nose up at it. Maybe it's the fact that it pulls from all walks of life, and actually has somewhat mixed demographic. what ever the reason, I am not entirely sure. It has taught me how to deal with all kinds of people. I have met lots of friends there; It has a large since of community in my opinion. I am enjoying every minute of it. Lets go bulldogs!!!
Geometry Math teacher is uninterested in teaching, but enjoys get paid for nothing. Students are not learning.
My child had a poor experience at this school. The administration and teachers do nothing to control the profanity in the school. My child was also attacked by students in the physical education class. The action taken by the administration is always- after the fact. This school needs to seriously consider a program to help students understand how to respect themselves and others. I would not recommend this school to any middle school student.
My son attended and played on the football team '09. He received a scholarship to college and was greatly helped by the Principal (Mr. Moyer), Athletic Director (Mr. Clements) and his Coach (Kevin Pettis). My wife and I also attended DHS...Bulldog Pride
Deland High School produced many outstanding students in a diverse community.
My daugther went to DHS for her freshman year. She liked it, but as a parent I could see that they were lacking. She was in gifted for middle school and did great. But she just couldn't be challenged enough. Her grades went down and her attitude got worse. For her 10th grade year I pulled her out and put her in private school. She did a fantastic job and was much happier
This school is OK, not the Best but not the worst. Although, with county cutbacks there are no subsatute teachers so if a teacher is absent then the class goes to the gym, so if 13 teachers are sick that is 13 classrooms in the gym with only one 'sub' to overlook all of them!
DeLand High School is an outstanding school. This year, we are proud to say that we are an 'A' school! As Junior of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program, I feel that this rigorous program has helped me developed stronger academic skills every year. DHS also provides AP, Honors, as well as, Early College and Dual Enrollment where students can take classes at the local Daytona Beach College and receive early college credit. DHS has a wide variety of extracurriculars and sports. There is a strong Performing Arts Department that includes Dance and the Hill Street Theater. And lets not forget the OUTSTANDING Chorus Department (which I am a proud member of). The staff and administration play an active part in daily campus life. You can see the principal, Mr. Mitch Moyer, around campus everyday, walking around making sure everything is all right. I love DHS, GO BULLDOGS!!! :)
My daughter graduated in 2006 from the ib program, she enjoyed all 4 years there and made life-long friends, not only with her peers but the caring teachers. She was involved with the swim team and teacher, principal and other parents were always involved and had great school spirt. I find that Deland high is the best around! - i would encourage everyone to look closer at a model school. I am proud to be associated with deland high and its' staff. Go bulldogs!
DHS offers a wide variety of courses, athletics and extracurricular activities. Students that put forth an effort can leave high school with a very good education. Like all schools there are areas of concern but I feel that faculty and staff go above and beyond everyday to reach out to those in need. Great school for students who are willing to get involved!
The high school serves a great many more cities than DeLand which lends to overcrowding. You get what you pay for. IB students will tell you it's great. Athletes will tell you it's great. But the vast majority of students who compromise the middle receive an average education. If considering relocation, ask DeLand high its college placement rate and the quality of higher ed institutions former students attend. That's a better indicator of overall academic quality than anecdotal stories.
I graduated from DHS and have very few good things to say about it. DHS is extremely overcrowded and dirty. The construction was a nightmare! There is very little discipline and the administrators on campus do very little to remedy the problem. Most classes learn very little because the teachers are busy trying to keep the class under control. Favoritism ran rampant among the staff for athletic students & actively involved students. The best part about DHS was the AP & IB classes. This is the only place where real learning occurs. I felt prepared for college only because of the AP classes. All of the other classes are just a joke. Do yourself and your child a favor and send them to a private school.
I recently moved to DeLand. I would have waited until my children were out of high school to move if I had known all the issues that the children here need to overcome. I am noticing that the people who are least satisfied with this school are from places other that DeLand. Perhaps that makes us more sensitive to the racial tensions, lack of admin control, of substitutes, of a decent lunch menu that has healthy options, and the sense that everyone is holding on tight and hoping to get through this. I have never witnessed so much hatred in one school. Perhaps it is a community problem and not just a school problem. My daughter's a good student, but she said it is easy to get A's here because everything is out of control-- so the teachers babysit all day.All she has to do the work. Quality doesn't matter.
I too am a Deland High student. And I cannot express how much appriciation I have for the principal and the administration. As an IB (international Baccalaurate) student, the teachers and classes encourage and challenge me. Overall the school is amzing and there is no other school I would rather attend. ~A proud lady bulldog~
I am a Deland High student who just wanted to take a moment to say to all those who complain or hate the school that Deland High School is the best thing that ever happened to me, had I not had the chance to attend DHS then I can promise you I would not be alive today to write this. No matter what any parents (including mine) have to say or do against this school or my self I am proud to call my self a Deland High student. Parents complain here when the school isn't perfect, but I can guarentee you that no school is perfect, but atleast the people in Deland high took the time to knotice a drowning soul and stop and help. DHS has helped me both emotionally and academicly, something I never thought posible. So I thank you, Deland High School, for giving me a chance.
This was the worst experience I have ever had with my child. I would never recommend this school to anyone!
Three of my children have attended DeLand High School. It is comforting to send them to a school where I don't have to worry about their safety. I am impressed by the caring qualities of the teachers and administration at DHS. I recieve good communication when my students need help. Their teachers have been very willing to work with me in order to improve the kids' study habits, even when it has meant more work on their part. On the flip side, their teachers have taken time to send emails, post cards, and notes telling me about good things my children are doing in school. The teachers support the student activities and are seen wearing Green and Gold at major events. The sports programs are outstanding. The band has become an award winning program, even in at National Competitions. The community provides great support to the school. Love DHS!
