Curtis is a great school for children who do not have any learning disabilities. Should your child have the misfortune of having any sort of learning challenges, this is not the school for you. The staff is less than supportive and you will often find your child being disciplined and sent to detention instead of receiving much-needed compassion and support.

I'm pretty sure the parent that wrote the 11/23/14 review should have gone to Curtis! It's MORALE, not moral. But more than that, I have found it to be completely the opposite. I think the staff and the principal especially put the needs and concerns of the kids and parents before the teachers or themselves. May not be great for MORALE but happy & well behaved kids = happy teachers. This is a great school, it wouldn't have a 500+ name waiting list if it wasn't. People who can't or don't follow rules don't like it, check your self entitlement at the door, the rules are the same for everyone.

The principal told me that the moral of her staff is more important than the education of the children. I thought the principal, and teachers are there for the kids. Let's speak up for our children and let's not keep any child's education behind. Let's show them that we care.

My children have attended Curtis since K. I am a teacher myself, at another elementary school, and wouldn't have them anywhere else. Both of my children have become responsible, caring, and excellent students through Curtis. My children have been challenged through the gifted program which in my opinion is top notch. Teachers really do care about the children there and are dedicated professionals. We are proud of the successes that we have achieved both academically and in the community. The facility is always clean, well maintained, and secure. As a working parent, I do not get to volunteer as much as I would like, but I am never treated any less for it. There has not been a single minute in the past 5 years that I have wished for some place other than Curtis for my kids!

My child is in his 2nd year of attendance at Curtis. We have been impressed with the professionalism and tenure of the teachers and administration. We feel that Curtis is providing him with an excellent education and that he has both teachers and a support staff that is very caring and attempts to help every child grow. My husband and I are very pleased with the education at Curtis Fundamental.

Curtis has the greatest teachers who really care about our kids and want them to do their best. Coming from a parent with a child with learning disabilities, they have supported both my daughter and me as we worked together as a team to help her to succeed. If it wasn't for the support or the teachers and staff, she wouldn't be the student she is today. I know she will succeed because of them.

This is our first year here at Curtis and I cannot say enough good things about it. One of my favorite things is the sense of community and family. You always feel like you are welcome and heard.

I am so glad we won this lottery! My daughter loves her school and we love her teachers. Wonderful place and staff really care and go above and beyond. This principal has a love for her students that I have not seen elsewhere. wish all schools were like this.

I currently have 3 children attending Curtis Fundamental. I couldn't say enough good things about this school. The teachers are great and the principal is very involved. Most of the involved parents are a positive contribution to the school. Some parents may not agree with the guidelines, but they do ensure equitable treatment of the children. My kids love Curtis Fundamental.

My child is in kindergarten at Curtis. We love it. Everyone is so nice, the teachers, staff and parents. My daughter is learning so much and has a great teacher. She is so excited to go to school and learn everyday. We are so happy she got into Curtis.

Great school, great teachers and principal. I feel that the support we have from the school as a whole is more than I ever dreamed of. I have had experience with home zone school and it doesn't compare to this school at all. I am so thankful that we got in on the lottery system. I would never second guess the fundamental way. Having to comment to being 100% involved is a great thing. If you can't be committed than this school is not for you.

Ever since our daughter started at Curtis her kindergarten year, we realized how lucky she was to get into such a great school. The teachers and staff go above and beyond to encourage the students to succeed. I believe that she will be able to grow and flourish with the education she continues to receive.

As a single minority Mother it was important that my child was able to transition from out of state and not feel lost in such a different environment. I was excited for my Child to attend Curtis but I have to admit I was concerned. Now two years later we have met so many parents and families and the staff and Admiistration are awesome..I'm blessed and thankful I found a school that is commited to education #proudsinglemom

My two children are at Curtis Fundamental (5th and 3rd grades). We could not be happier. Teachers are really dedicated to students' success. They go way above and beyond their responsibilities. Love the tradition of monthly Open Court, where students accomplishments and positive character traits are celebrated.

This school overall is pretty good. I do feel that some of the teachers are not as caring as others. I am not impressed with the principal though. If you have an issue she just blows it off and bullying is not adressed as it should be. The gifted teacher though is awesome and really goes above and beyond. I do agree about the previous comment about donations. I feel sometimes that the clique PTA members have to much say in what is going on also. Overall I was happy with most of the teachers but there were some that were really bad.

Curtis only cares about donations and ratings and not the students. Children should not be put on the back burner. Some of the teachers are great at what they do and you have the rest of them that just don't care and scream at the children and when a child does something wrong they do not correct them correctly. My child is advanced for his class and is not getting the proper education because they do not want him ahead of his class. If you have any problems about any of the teachers and you bring it up to the principle she will tell you to go to another school instead of trying to resolve the problems. The school policies are great just not alot of the staff. I want to know who is lying and giving the school 10 out of 10. Please stop lying to everyone and be honest about curtis fundamental.

We currently have a 4th and 2nd grader attending Curtis. What we value in Curtis is the Principle, Ms. Metz-Easley, the teachers (all of who have challenged our children), curriculum and diverse approaches they take to making learning fun and long lasting. The Art and Music teachers inspires our children creatively and PE teachers reinforce healthy behaviors (physically and teaches the value of good nutrition). My husband and I applaud the staff of Curtis Fundamental for all they do for the students.

Curtis is a great school and the teacher seem to genuinely care about the students. I also understand that they are mandated to " teach for the test" and how frustrating that must be for them. I also applaud the family involvement requirment and would like to suggest that if one family member doesn't seem to keeping the commitment, could staff contact other family members who are listed? Especially in cases of multiple children, it can be easy to lose track of things and this way other concerned family memvers could pick up the slack?

Curtis is a great school with parent involvement as the cornerstone of its success. Disruptive students are not tolerated which in turn improves the teachers ability to have quality interaction with the students that are there to learn. There were too unruly children in my daughters class last year and both of them were gone by October.

This is the finest elementary school in this part of the county. My daughter has been enrolled for 3 years and I am very satisified with the results. Parent envolvement is required and they have a no tolerance policy that works.

We left Curtis after a 1-1/2 years. I thought the curriculum would be more rigorous, but found out it is no different than any other elementary school. In my experience, a child meeting 'end of year expectations' early is not pushed or challenged. In fact, the school said they don't want children to work ahead of grade level, even if they are capable. While I appreciate some elements of the fundamental structure, it sometimes seemed like the rules were more important than keeping a child engaged and challenged. The result for us was an unhappy, stressed child who didn't feel like learning was fun. That being said, the parental involvement and support was wonderful as were some of the teachers.

Curits was a wonderful school under Mrs Duncan. We were a fundamental family. She knew every parent and every child under her watch. The new principle is very cold, does not make an effort to connect with parents and children. Curtis has become a factory since moving to Dunedin. Our kids our only a number here. If they don't make it in the fundamental system too bad, they have more on the list to move thru. The teachers who have been with Curtis a long time are great. The newer teacheres need to communicate, connect, and show their students that they are not a number, but a member of the Curtis family.

Curtis is a very good school. I have 2 children at the school. The teachers are wonderful with all the children! They focus mainly on reading and writing. I wish they focused a little more on math and science. But as a whole this school is very good!

My child has been at Curtis for four years. Although Curtis does have some clear advantages like a high level of parental involvement, there are negatives as well. Curtis is like any other Florida school - it's way behind.

my child has been at curtis for three years--if i had not gotten into this school i would have gone private. i believe this school is better than all public and most private schools in this area. it is not perfect--i am very picky and my biggest complaint would be that they sometimes put too much energy into little rules and miss the larger picture of why the rules are there--hopefully to develop each child to the max. some teachers are fantastic, a few are mediocre. the principal is very good at middle managing between all parties--parents--teachers and students. at its best curtis provides a small, family environment where you feel like your child is known as an individual and her academic/social/emotional needs are important. the school will add 100 seats in 2008-2009 and move to a new location--i hope this change wont damage the unique character of the school.

Curtis Fundamental is an outstanding school. Not only is the quality of education exceptional, but also, the faculty and staff are nurturing and kind. It has been evident to us throughout the past 2 years that everyone there, staff, students and parents, are there for one common goal ... to help all students achieve their maximum potential. Because it is a small school there truly is a family enviroment where everyone knows everyone else, and everyone is willing to help out. There are constantly parent volunteers helping with gifted and struggling kids. Teachers give their home phone numbers out so they can be reached when necessary, and they are always willing to stay after school if needed. Finally, for the past 3 years FCAT scores have been second only to Tarpon Springs Fundamental (based on Pinellas County schools only), making this a truly spectacular school.

my child is in kindergarten at Curtis and it is midway through the year. I considered only curtis and one other top public school---otjherwise I would have gone private. I could not be more pleased with every aspect of the school. the teachers individualize childrens work --so that each child is constantly being challenged at his/her own speed. the principal does not make a great impression --but the heart of this school is with its excellent teachers and committed parents.

I am the Grandparent of a 4th grader. I have watched her grow from the minute she entered Curtis. She has thrived on the structure and knows what is expected of her and if she does not comply, she receives a consequence. We, as a family, are totally involved with her work and her day to day activities and feel the school is absolutely the best and it is exemplified when you walk in and see very happy disciplined students.

Curtis compared to other schools around the area is in my opinion, one of the best schools. The classes are structured so the kids know what is expected of them in order for them to learn. The fact the every parent comes to the PTA in order for their child to go to school there, just helps with parental involvment. Curtis is leaps and bounds above the other school my child attended when we moved here.

If you don't mind rules and regulations than this is a good school for you. I believe in structure as a part of education. The first P.T.A. meeting was intended to let parents know what they were in for. As, a single mother of 4, I agreed that children DO NOT belong at PTA meetings and if I can get a baby sitter so can they. PTA meetings are an important part of Curtis Funadamental . I love this school and am happy to have my children absorb their learning opportunities.

The only positive is that the students/teachers don't have to tolerate many disciplinary concerns that other schools may have to deal. The teachers aren't really friendly and caring with the students. The teachers actually have a somewhat 'stuck up' attitude. Their first required parent meeting wasn't warm and friendly at all. In fact, it was quite insulting to parents that had to bring their children to the meeting. Several parents contacted wrote letters to the School Board in regards to the first meeting. They are so stuck on 'rules' for the parents that they've forgotten what they are there for, which is to educate all the children, not ones of a particular race or economic background. They need diversity training.

Want to improve this school's profile?

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.
