While I understand the concept behind what most Charter Schools are attempting to do, I do not agree with it. The teachers and staff are indeed friendly and keep the parents informed on daily activities within this Academy, but low test scores a state raking of 1880 out of 2040 in academics is a sad thing. The kids at some point while here may be able to pass state requirements, but what happens in grades 9-12 and beyond when it matters most. These kids need to be taught not only education, but life skills as well. We can not afford to continue to allow the Dunbar community to lag behind. Lets all get up and do the right thing, this is not the school system that we once had back in the 1950s/60s.
It's unfortunate this school has taken a beating in the news lately. What people don't realize is that these are kids that the public school system has basically given up on, but that Lee Charter has taken in and tried hard to bring up. My friend brought her nephews and niece to this school after they were falling behind in other schools, and they were given tutoring after hours for free and really given the support that they never got in the years prior. People don't see all the good that goes behind the scenes, but they see what's being hyped up in the media and reported unfairly.
Test scores do not tell the entire story! With this school's limited enrollment, only 2 eighth graders failed the FCAT writing, however, since there were only 11 eighth graders that really hurt the school. Teachers are very dedicated and do after school tutoring all year. My children have learned so much since they have been in attendance. Two of them could barely read even though they were 5th and 6th grade students. Already so much improvement has been shown. I fully support Lee Charter Academy and their open door policy. The public should go to the school and see the good things that are happenings there on a daily basis.
If Lee Charter Academy was in any other part of the city, it would be the most talked about school. But it is not. But that's all right too. You see, Lee Charter Academy is doing fine. It is doing great. Our principal, Dr. Chapman is like no other. She truly LOVES and CARES about EACH and EVERY student. She fights for the students. She gives them more chances than they deserve. The teachers are also dedicated. I'm glad that Dr. Chapman has a great support system from the community (sorority groups, retired teachers, fraternities and her mother). What is lacking is the support from the PARENTS. Dr. Chapman and the teachers CANNOT do this by themselves. It will take more than 6 parents at the PTO meeting to contribute and be a working force with the administration. Keep up the good work.
I cannot begin to say enough about the princpal and the instructional staff of Lee Charter Academy. My child started out below level. Even though he gained over nine hundred points his first year at Lee Charter, he still earned a level 1 on the FCAT. With hard work and a dedicated staff that refused to give up on my child, when the 2008 FCAT grades came in, my child scored Level 3. The principal even makes home visits when she cannot reach parents via telephone or mail. Keep up the excellent work, Lee Charter staff. Our students are the real winners in this situation!
Having taken notice of the dedication and hard work of the staff of Lee Charter Academy, two community based groups have decided to partner with the Zetas and Sigmas to help provide help necessary for the best academic, moral and social achievement for the students who attend this school. The new groups are the Isaac Anderson Bar Association and American Legion Post 192 Women Auxiliary. Plans for the year include eight seminars on issues that affect their lives, providing school supplies for those student who cnnot afford them, adopt one family from that school who needs assistance, try to provide some volunteer services that hopefully will include tutoring and purchase a PA system for the school. Test results clearly indicate that dedication and hard work really pays off.
Lee Charter Academy is a great school that focuses primarily on academics. The students, teachers, and staff continue to advance academically even though they are faced with many adversities. My children were in private schools before Lee Charter Academy and because I was paying they were getting the grades. Their first year at Lee Charter Academy they did not test well however with their hard work, extended days, and Saturday school they were able to turn that a round. One of my daughters received a 4 on FCAT math and a 5 on FCAT reading. My other daughter also increased her reading score tremendously after struggling for two years. Take a bow LCA you have done great a job and keep up the good work!
I am so excited about the accomplishments of Lee Charter Academy. The students at this school have learned much more than academics, they are learning social graces as well.
I am so proud of the hard work and dedication of Lee Charter's staff to obtain professional development in order to support student learning. As seen by this year s school grade of 'A' and meeting AYP it has paid off!
Hard work + dedication = a school. Congratulations lee charter academy! this is an awesome school.
This is a great school. Lee Charter Academy went from a D grade to an A. Awesome job.
Lss Charter is steadily improving! A great choice for students in the area
I was a student at GCHS when it first opened. My brother and I moved from WI and knew nothing about FL schools (after 3, now I do). I transferred out after the first semester, but my brother stayed for one more year until he graduated. He liked it, but I hated it because I was an A student and the school was just too easy. The teachers couldn't control the students and in 10th grade they were teaching things I had learned in 7th grade. My brother stayed because he has a learning disability and GCHS was a lot easier for him and he did well there.
The quality of learning is terrible. This was an F school for the 1st year and it looks as if the grade wont go higher than a D. There is a high teacher turnover and student turnover. The principal is very rougish. Most teachers are not trained in their subject and all but 2 teachers have no certification. I pulled my children out after the 1st semester.
