Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

It took me 2 years to get my daughters into this school. The teachers are knowledgeable and go out of their way to help the kids. The staff is also just as amazing. Lots of parent participation. Mr. Calzadilla greets parents and students, some by name, every morning!! Lots of activities for kids. Best decision I ever made was to transfer my kids to this school!! Work load is intense at times, but well worth it. I've compared the level of education to other schools/students and Air Base strives to teach the kids more. PTA is also very involved.

Our school is an amazing school. The environment is outstanding. My kids have learned so much over the years at ABE. The teachers are Friendly and caring. The principal is so involved and can be seen at the school on a regular basis. Our green team always has fun activities. We have well kept and maintained gardens for growing Herbs, veggies and tomatoes. I am honored to be an ABE parent. Because of the outstanding quality of learning at ABE, I am happy with the success my children have had at the school. Best A school in town.

I just had to take a minute to write about the main office staff at Air Base. Wow! My children have attended since Kindergarten and now are in fourth and fifth grade. I walked in to apply for VPK for next year since I heard that those applications are available through February 27th. I was pleasantly surprised with the office staff. There are two new ladies in the front, Ms. Lockee and Ms. Serrano. Ms. Lockee helped me out with the application. What an amazing lady! I was so pleased with her service. She answered all of my questions and was patient with me. She was so knowledgeable, quick, attentive...I am so happy she is part of the main office staff. I won't leave Ms. Serrano out either. She has helped me in the past and I can tell you, I don't ever mind dealing with her. She's always so nice and willing to help. What a team! Thank you Air Base for finding these two great ladies!

The webpage is amazing!!! What a wealth of information!! I recently transferred to Florida for work, and I went to their website to learn more about the school, it's programs, staff, and various activities and events. It was visually stunning!! Packed with information!! I filled out my child's application immediately. I look forward to my daughter attending there for years to come, especially now that that I was told it is a kindergarten through eighth grade center.

We missed this school so much!! Me (the parent) and my three children. It's such a diverse well rounded school. We transferred to Tennessee for work and though the school is well staffed by decent teacher where they now attend...(forgive me, but I must tell the truth)...my children have been called the N-word over here three times already since being here. (sobbing)..never in my life have my children been exposed to such racism and such nonsense in their lives...never!! The principle at the school have handled it diligently and was kind enough to called me at home and told me what happen as my little ones went (8 yr old twins) went to the office crying. Miss the diversity, no bullying standards, the curriculum and "second language" this school offered my kids. Should have never left..(but as a supporting wife to the hubby I agreed to pick up and move. Tell you what though...MY FOOT is down, (oh yeah!) and we're moving back! Airbase....here we come!

Recently, I transferred my daughter to Air Base from another top rated elementary school with an IB program. However, I am thrilled with Air Base. The school is extremely diverse and representative of the country. She is in full-time Gifted and the teacher is amazing! As a teacher within the MDCPS system, I am so impressed with her level of compassion and excitement for learning. My only reservation for parents considering this school is the amount of hoomework. It borders on ridiculous. That withstanding, it tops our parochial school and IB school experiences.

My son recently transferred to Air Base Elementary as part of the first sixth grade class. I have already been so impressed with the caring and professional attitude of the staff and teachers. I am thrilled that this school will now go through eighth grade. The foreign language component is such an asset to my son. I am looking forward to what this year has to offer. Air Base is truly a hidden treasure!!

This is the best school in Homestead. Their fulltime gifted program is awesome. I have two kids in gifted and the teachers genuinely care about all their students. They love going to school. The only problem we have with the school is that they are constantly fundraising. Everyday they sell something different. My kids are always asking for money.

My daughter just finished her Pre-Kindergarten year at Air Base Elementary. Such an OUTSTANDING school! I would have never traded it for any other. Ms. Monge, her teacher, is dynamic! My daughter actually wanted to go to school everyday, even on weekends. She looked forward to being at Air Base and...so did I. Everyone there makes you feel comfortable. It is truly an Air Base family.

Air Base Elementary is definately a top notch school! When i first toured the school, I was skeptical because the suroundings of the school was not what i expected. I actually went to the school because i was recommended Air Base from someone i believe has great children, very smart. I was especially impressed at how much they knew about China and Africa. I was excited to tour the school, but when i arrived i thought, "nope, not for my child". I talked to my friend about this. In the end, i took my chances. Boy was i glad! I absolutely love this school! My children's teachers TEACH and care about them! My children are happy to go to school and there is always some type of event going on! Kuddos to all of the teachers at Air Base. Kuddos to the leader, Mr. Calzadilla, youre doing something right! I am very pleased with my choice! Thank you!

I just called the school about preschools for my son. I had a couple of questions to ask....I was rushed off the phone, abrutly spoken to, told that they don't give school tours, and told to call back in March. Air Base is supposed to be a good school, but my interested sure dropped. If they don't even have time to answer a couple of questions from a potential parent, how are they going to answer my questions when I have them regarding my sons school work. Very disappointed

My son has attended both KIndergarten and Pre-K at Air Base Elementary. I think this school is wonderful!! I have enjoyed the opportunities to help out for the past two years in my son's classes. The opportunity to volunteer at Air Base is truly appreciated by both the teachers and administration. I am looking forward to the wonderful years ahead that my son has at this school and I am hoping that my younger daughter's experience at Air Base will be just as great.

Absolutely the worst run school I have ever seen. The Principal plays favorites and if you are not in the "club" you are not listened to nor are any issues addressed. The Principal will immediately take sides with his favorites even if they are breaking every rule in the book (My specific case was a mother - also the PTA treasurer - was bringing her infant daughter into the classroom. Stayed there most of the day and the child was allowed free movement in the classroom and frequently disrupted class). When I brought my issue up the Principal spend 75% of the time talking about how wonderful this woman was and how much she does for the school. He didn't do anything to the parent but went after me about my attitutude. I have never been around so many incompetent individuals in my life. Don't let the A school fool you like I was or make sure you are in the "club". I highly recommend not sending your child to this school.

This is my daughter's first year at this school and she absolutely loves it! She is in 3rd grade gifted and wakes up every morning ready to go! This school has a lot to offer the students and is culturally well-rounded. She takes an hour of Spanish every day, which at first she thought would be too much, but that is not the case at all. The teachers and staff are dedicated to the students and parents. She tells people that going to her school is almost like going to Disney World every day......really!

I can not stress how much this school goes beyond the call of duty. I see the Principal greeting almost every student by name, former teacehers ask how my child is doing this year, and my child's current teacher is a blessing. She bends over backwards, in order to provide, my husband and I, learning strategies for my child. This school is WONDERFUL!!!! The only area of concern would be the customer service given at the childcare office. I see my child becoming a life long learner, in large part, because of the dedication of the ABE team.

Because it provides integral education to kids and engage parents to support schools efforts to improve educational standards. Each worker there, teachers and non-teaching staff care about the well being of children not only in the school but in the area. ABE supports arts education projects and encourage children to pursue higher education.

This is my son's last year at Air Base and we are suffering. Mr. Calzadilla is the best principal... what an extraordinary human being. The teacher are wonderful Mr. Fairclough, Ms Davis, Ms. Rivero. I can't believe the passion that they have to teach, they are the kind of teacher that will use money from his own pocket for their students. I will definetely recommend this school. The gifted program is excelent.

I do hope most parent's feel the way my wife and I do. Last school year 2007-2008 we had the pleasant and wonderful experience and opportunity to have five of our children attend pre-k through 5Th grade. Starting with the extraordinarily work of the Principal Mr. Raul Calzadilla, Jr. and his Vice Principal Mr. Peter B. Gutierrez,to a wonderful teacher and mentor of out littlest one, Ms. Molina and the wonderful teaching's and personality of Kinder-garden teacher Ms. Mazzinni, hroughout the wonderful work of all of his administrative staff. The brilliance and hard work of all the teachers and facilitators on his staff at Airbase Elementary. I would like to just take this 5 minutes time and let all know who have their children attend this 'A' Magnet School on how we should applaud and appreciate all that is done from everyone who is directly involved with this beautiful school day in

Of all the schools I have taught in and sent my children to, Air Base is by far the most superior. Mr. Calzadilla is the most passionate and professional principal I have ever seen, a man with the unique talent of making everyone, from staff to parents to children, feel vitally important in the school learning and character building environment. The children receive a well-balanced education and have fun while doing it. There are moments when parent and child may feel overwhelmed, but they reap the benefits that make it all worth the while. I am pleased to say the least, and confident that my children will be well prepared to tackle the demands of higher education. The foundation is set at this level and Air Base has mastered the building process, as proven with its consistent rating of an 'A' Magnet School of Distinction every year.

ABE is a well deserved A-rated school. Our daughters this year are in kindergarten and first grade. They have excellent teachers: Ms. Catalano, Ms. Polo; Ms. Robinson. These teachers provide a nuturing learning environment for our children. Most importantly, they are well respected and loved by their students. We are very grateful that our girls are receiving such an outstanding education. ABE's fine arts program is great as well. Our daughters benefit from Music, Art, PE, Science Lab, and Computer once weekly. They receive foreign language instruction once daily. They also have access to a wonderful library and accelerated reader program. We can't say enough...if you send your children to ABE be prepared to get involved ....and maintain high standards / expectations for learning.

We are out of the country now, but my children boy and girl attended ABE, for five years, it was the best beginning education foundation they could have received. From the best pre-k teacher, to the best fourth grade teacher. They have learned of so many international cultures, and until today they are so interested in learning geography and current events. One teacher, in specific has made an impression on my daughter, her fourth grade teacher Ms. Wright, there are not enough words to describe per beautiful personality and professionalism, her interest to let the child achieve. A true dedicated teacher. Well, all the teachers there are wonderful, and the students are their priority. The school has come a long way, and that is only the beginning. Totally the best, in Miami.

I was impressed with the school and my son's teacher. The children are challenged academically and socially. My son started Kindergarten and his teacher (Mrs Caballero) was fantastic. She kept in touch constantly and made sure we knew how he was doing in school. Even when he was hospitalized for a week she kept the work for him to catch up on. I have enjoyed dealing with the staff at this school.

Air Base is an excellent school! My children were well prepared for middle school and are doing very well thanks to the dedicated staff at Air Base. The curriculum is superb and it promotes a global and multicultural awareness far above any other program I've seen. my children love the foreign language and Gifted classes. There is so much homework, one has to wonder what the teachers are teaching the children in class. That school may be an A school but it is only thanks to the parents. Remember the FCAT and the principal's speech? It was enough to stress the parents and scare the children into working and studying double so that the children pass and the school keeps its grade A school and the financial subsidies from the state! They do not care much for the children.

I agree with the December 2003 statement, 'The children are expected to come with an education, not seeking an education'. Do not ask the principal or teachers for help. You will not get any. You as a parent must teach your own child. Don't let the 'A' fool you.

- submitted by a parent
no rating December 03, 2003
I found much to be desired. The school promotes parent involvement only in its literature. The adminstration and most of its teachers feel threaten by active parent involvement. The school fosters an atmosphere that children are expected to come with an education not seeking an education. Don't let the 'A' fool you. Everything here is not what it appears to be. Ask a student or parent. Present and former.
