The Principal of the school, Dr Brennan, received one star for leadership because it will not allow me to leave zero stars. In only half a year, he has taken a school that had just been designated an "A" school and dumped it into the toilet. He has effectively ended all extracurricular activities with the exception of football by requiring the activity leaders to submit written plans for all activities and fundraisers for the year, and then refusing to approve or deny them. The chorus has been bumped from a free event because they did not RSVP in time. They will not have their uniforms in by the scheduled date of their first concert, because they haven't been approved. The male choir and the jazz band have been terminated, for no real explanation. All band classes are now the same, so that juniors and seniors who have played all the way through high school are now stuck in classes with freshmen who don't know which end of their instrument to blow into. He states that he wants to focus on academics, but is obviously so short sighted that he doesn't realize that limiting or eliminating extracurricular activities is going to cause his best students to go elsewhere.

I agree with another parent about trying to be involved and getting nowhere with the staff. Last year my son was in 9th grade and I made multiple attempts to meet with the guidance counselor. First two calls went to voice mail, which was full, so I couldn't leave a message. Third call I left a message but never received a phone call in return. Emailed each of his teachers and only received a response from two. One was Luke warm at best, while the other was very supportive. Front office staff is extremely rude when you have questions and they can rarely give you an answer. ROTC is their only saving grace for my child. If your child is highly motivated to get high grades, they will probably be fine. But if your child is like so many other kids, they all not be supported and encouraged and parent involvement seems almost unwelcome.

This is an A school. The teachers and students have worked hard to strive for a school grade that reflects the achievements of the students, not public opinion. If you ever really want to know what happens in a school get involved by doing more than complaining and making phone calls, show up for school events or volunteer. Spend some time really getting to know the wonderful students in this school for yourself. Many awards, scholarships (both academic and athletic), industry certifications, early college classes, are all accomplished by the students at this school.

I just started attending this school. There are uncertified teachers here who don't know anything. One teacher asked me to correct his mistakes because when I came to the school i knew the concepts. Its the beginning of the second nine weeks and the class is on the 2nd week of school work because the teachers for the class kept quitting. Very unorganized. Kids are disobedient and hinders learning for those who want to.

Awful. Extremely disorganized, staff and guidance shows no care, interest, or respect for students, poor teaching that causes problems when taking standardized/AP tests, security guards that show favoritism and allow certain kids to skip classes, a general feeling of incompetence and lack of safety. Not to mention the blatant racial prejudice shown by the staff and majority of students. Overall, awful experience. If you want your child to receive a quality education in a safe environment, this is not the school for them.

First Coast High school is a Five Star place of learning. I give the school its stars by the location of the school and the disciplinary of their students. If respect is not present among the staff and student the learning is in vain within our society.

First Coast High School is the school that my whole family has graduated from. Everyone says the school is horrible and saying how the teachers don't care, how we fight every day, or how it's not safe. Our teachers do care. I'm going into the 10th grade, and my freshman year was great. The teachers knew we were scared about entering highschool and they did everything they could to help us feel at home. I was in the AP/Honors program and my teachers did everything to help me and other students get ready for my exams and the FCAT. Next, we don't fight every day. We may have a few fights every week but it's not everyday. Wherever you hear that, they're over exaggerating. Another thing, First Coast is one of the safest schools. You can't walk out of a classroom without running into security. They make sure that students are where they're supposed to be. So stop putting the school down, and learn the truth. Just because our grade is bad, doesn't mean it's a bad school. First Coast is like home to a lot of students, especially me. The faculty are like parents and care for the students. Send your child to First Coast and have them join the family, they'll love it and so will you.

First Coast is a wonderful school! Teachers care about their students, and want them to succeed. There are bad apples at any school, don't let that 1% prevent your child from attending one of the best schools in Duval County!

I wouldn't suggest this school to my worst enemy. I have talked to guidance counselors who were clueless. All this school is concerned with is winning football games. They could careless about the children's education, although I have met with some teachers who long to do more but can't. The classrooms are overcrowded and some of the teachers are only there to collect a paycheck. My daughter did her freshman year in HS in Illinois and due to having to relocate because of my job, my daughter's experience in high school has taken a turn for the worse and as a parent who is much involved with my children's education. I am highly disappointed. My daughter completed her 9th grade in Illinois, came to First Coast and they still registered her in the 9th grade when she was suppose to be in 10th and haven't fixed it yet as they said they would and she is suppose to be entering her senior year. This mess is crazy!

Because this is our neighborhood school and we didn t want to bus our kid into a magnet school we gave First Coast High a try. I would not recommend this school if your child s education is important to you. If your kid goes to school because you are required by law to make them go then this school will help your child get by. If your child wants to make something of them self in life, find another school even if it means bussing into a magnet school.

This is the most disorganized school that I've ever been associated with.Communication between administratIon and parents is virtually non existent. Good luck having your call returned. Fights and assaults are commonplace with little follow through from staff. Some teachers seem to have great difficulty in keeping up with work that has been turned in resulting in erronious grading. If you have another choice I highly recommend that you place your child some place other than FCHS. It's sad that the high school experience has had a negative impact on my child

I go to First Coast. I have Since Freshmen year & I have found First Coast to be a good school for the only school in my area. Im in National Honor Society & it looks good for when I graduate. The teachers are really good I have a 4.5 GPA. I dont know why FC has such bad reviews because its actually good. Students from ALL of the Northside come to Coast so that can make the school bad but if you ask me I rather go to First Coast than Andrew Jackson or Ribualt schools of that nature. So if someone is saying that the school wouldnt look good on your college application itactually does if your making good grades that makes the school letter grade go up. But at FC there are alot of students that dont care and make HORRIBLE grades which makes First Coast look bad.

This school has numerous students lingering in the hall ways seemiling nowhere to go for whole class periods. Open gambling was observed in one classroom. Numerous student fights during the week. Maybe it was a bad week, but things seemed to be a normal everyday occurrance, judging by the attitude of School faculty attitudes during observed events. Also, numerous pregnant students. The overall observation is this enviroment is not conducive to an educational atmosphere.

Okay I am a senior at First Coast High School, this is my official second year here because I transferred from Sandalwood. For starters, this school has had problems with the students discipline because a handful of them were brought in from other schools who have been known for their continuity of being an F school. Of course if you get all those students and throw them into FCHS then the grades will decrease and violence increases. Anyway, I am a member of the National Honors Society and I was just recently accepted to one of the top ranked universities in the country, probably the same university a 'private school' student is attending... its not where you're getting your education from , its all about how you take advantage of the oppurtunities given to you. I'm a public school student, cant wait to see your private school kid in college (:

i went to this school from 1999-2003 it was a great school then and still is i have three family members in this school right now, no school is perfect but fchs does what it can to make sure students are safe and learning, if the school board would stop sending all the bad kids to the school from falling schools it would have smaller class sizes and would be a lot more safer but as long as they let the bad ones come in it is what it is, as far as the staff there still helpful with anything they can do, but every school has there limits, maybe the ones who said this school is horrible should look at themselfs or the kids before jumping on here and writing things that arent true!

As a father of two high school students, I have to put two cents in. This is a horrible school. The administration does not care. The teachers are scared of the students. The only subject that gets any attention is the FCAT. If you can find away to afford a private school, I would do it. It is your child's future, don't gamble with it here.

I'm currently a Junior at First Coast. I've read some of the previous reviews of the school and I just had to add my input. First Cosat is not perfect, we all know that. First Coast is trying their hardest! The reason I barely had a math teacher for the first 2 years is because some students terrorized the teachers so much, they didn't want to work there anymore. It's not always the teachers! It's some students and even some of the parents. Cause if their children was raised up right, they wouldn't act stupid in school!

I agree with the last poster that it has potential, but they took too long to get it together. I pulled my child after one year due to negative influences around her causing her to behave uncharacteristicly. The day we tried to withdraw her, they told us we'd have to come back because they had to focus their attention on the fights that had just occured. I knew then that we had made the right decision. She is now in a private school and thriving. I do continue to suppport FCHS and pray for its success.

First Coast High School has great potential. It will take participation from all parties working together; administrators, teachers, students, parents and the community. I must say as a parent I worry about all my children's safety at 'any' school. I have yet to find a school that doesn't have problems.

I found the curriculum limited and archaic, the administration clueless and the involvement of parents with teachers extremely frustrating. Often it took up to 3 weeks for teachers to respond to concerns and only after harassing them on a daily basis and calling the district office were my calls answered. Safety is a major concern. I would not recommend this school to any parent that cares about their child s education. I would go as far as warning of any public school in the Duval County school board control.

I just graduated from first coast. We have had great administration over my 4 years there.First Coast is a developing school who has so many open doors for welling students to take. But, over the past year we have had student from troubled schools come to FCHS.We have exceptional departments that open students to so many different opportunities.I can honestly say that the teachers do care.We were on the news a few times but i must say it was not the whole truth! Half the time its truly stupid kids trying to get attention. So,if your child is going to FCHS..get involved! because it could just be your child without the name on the news starting trouble...

I'm going into my Junior Year here and I don't like it at all. The classes are mediocre and misleading, such as the computer business skills class. It's just learning to type and nothing else. They don't even have classes for programming as something simple as php. The average student's attitude in this school are to not get involved in any AP classes (if you can call them that) and at least get the lowest possible grades to pass onto the next grade. No wonder the school average is still a D. I wish I could go to a better school, but there are none in my region without driving 45 min to another school just as bad as First Coast. At least the people you meet are mostly decent. But there's still a lot of violence going on almost every week. I give this school a 1 out of 5.

I moved here from NC a few years ago and now im a sophmore. My freshman year I signed up to be apart of the Swim Team and the Chorus the chorus is one of the best in the stateand our swimteam s rerally good.I feel that it is really easy to make friends it just depends on who you hang with, if you want to make a lot of friends join the Chorus because I have made so many in there. I feel that the AP classes are a waste of time so just take Honor classes and maeby some classes @ FLVS.net (thier free). And when you become a jounier take classes @ FCCJ it counts for HS and College and its free college!!!!. Now our school isnt ther most peaceful but we still have an abundance of security and trying thier best to keep us safe.

The school has its problems. Students are very disrespectful. It has been fun though...in large parts due to CDR Jacobson, Senior Chief Briley and Major Wirkus in the NJROTC program. In my opinion all students should take it, for the fact that it instills responsibility and respect for leaders and adults, others and yourself.

I am a concerned parent and father of a son that had the poteintial to be an academic college student and was totally ruined by this environment in this school. I must say that the assistant principal was very eger to listen and cared to get to the bottom of the problems surrounding my son. In my opinion, if you are a parent in this area and care of your child's growth. Then you better be very observational with them. Get involved.

First Coast High School is definitely moving in the right direction. The FCAT scores are showing progress. 10th grade FCAT Writes scores were higher than previous years. Our Advanced Placement student enrollment increased by more than 200% this past year as we continue to increase rigorous course offerings. We will add AP Music History as an example. The new principal is an upbeat disciplinarian and an even better instructional leader. The students know who their principal is and respect him! Chorus and Band programs are outstanding! Athletics are thriving! Several student athletes received scholarships last year and several have committed to college for next year already. The football team will play their first game on ESPN this year in South Carolina. The school will also receive a multi million dollar indoor Olympic size pool this year. It is a great time to be a First Coast Buccaneer!

This school has many issues. Beginning with the staff letting the students over run the school. The children wear what they want, use foul language and have no respect for others. The staff tolerates this behavior from some students, yet others are singled out. There is more drugs and weapons on this campus then what the staff realizes. The vehicles in the parking lot have contraband as well. As far as Academics the teachers are so overwhelmed with over crowding there is no high standards, the motto 'just do what you can, you may or may not pass.' My children suffered from attending this school. If your child is or is not involved in sports there are certain groups of students that are glorified. The atmosphere always seems negative at this school. Of course we as parents have helped them bounce back to the standards they are accustom to.

We are new here from another state and I've researched many area high schools. First Coast doesn't rank well and was not my choice. Unfortunately we are stuck due to districting. My daughter is doing well but that's not really saying much. She is not being challenged at all. Only one of her teachers seems to care, also does the Green House administrator. If Duval County schools can produce a Paxon and a Stanton, why can't they share the wealth! Most of the Jacksonville High Schools are average or below average.

My son has attended First Coast for his entire high school years; we were very concerned to take him out of an excellent arts magnet school and put him in the local school because of moving to the area. We did want him to develop friendships locally however. Most his teachers have been excellent; we know of one that will make herself available to tutor students on a Saturday to better prepare them for an AP exam. My son has been in chorus since 9th grade; he is a Senior; the chorus program is second to none. The instructor is superb and the chorus is top notch. It is a pleasure to attend their concerts. To see parental involvement in action, the chorus boosters operate a concession at the Jag games. There are about 30-50 parents working hard to support the chorus. A great school.
