In the Duval County Public Schools (DCPS) there are 106 elementary, 28 middle and 17 high schools. In addition, there are five alternative schools, two academies of technology and three exceptional education schools. The district is divided into four clusters: Clusters 1 and 2 divide the K – 8 schools, Cluster 3 includes all the high schools, and Cluster 4 includes the Superintendent’s Standard Bearer and Accelerated schools. Students may attend a school within their cluster, or they may apply to attend a magnet or charter school, or a school outside the district (called interdistrict choice).The deadline to apply to a magnet school is at the end of February. The deadline for charter schools is in mid-May. Students with special needs may be eligible to receive a McKay Scholarship to attend a private school.
Under the federal No Child Left Behind law, students attending a Title I school designated as "in need of improvement" have the right to attend a higher-performing school in the district.Florida has an open enrollment policy, which means that if your child attends or is assigned to a low-performing school in the district, you have the right to use an Opportunity Scholarship to attend a higher-performing school (called intradistrict choice), including public schools, public charter schools and private schools, as long as there is space. Some districts will allow your child to attend a school in a neighboring district (called interdistrict choice).
