In the Duval County Public Schools (DCPS) there are 106 elementary, 28 middle and 17 high schools. In addition, there are five alternative schools, two academies of technology and three exceptional education schools. The district is divided into four clusters: Clusters 1 and 2 divide the K – 8 schools, Cluster 3 includes all the high schools, and Cluster 4 includes the Superintendent’s Standard Bearer and Accelerated schools. Students may attend a school within their cluster, or they may apply to attend a magnet or charter school, or a school outside the district (called interdistrict choice). The deadline to apply to a magnet school is at the end of February. The deadline for charter schools is in mid-May. Students with special needs may be eligible to receive a McKay Scholarship to attend a private school.Under the federal No Child Left Behind law, students attending a Title I school designated as "in need of improvement" have the right to attend a higher-performing school in the district.
