Lake Placid Elementary is a wonderful school in many ways. The teachers are caring, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic. They are passionate about helping their students learn. My son is also ADHD and the teachers were great! They carefully worked with us to help him thrive with appropriate accommodations. The level of academic rigor and support in the curriculum is also strong. No doubt the teachers deserve praise for their teaching abilities. They are truly exemplary! Their new principal is kind, attentive, and supportive of parents and teachers alike--not any easy balance. My only concerns are with their facilities. Our kids and their wonderful teachers deserve so much more! The bathrooms are old and some sinks are loose and pose a safety hazard. Their cleanliness is also sub-par. Admittedly, it is a school and kids will be kids. Yet, these seem particularly bad. If the goal is to keep our kids in school and learning, it would help if the bathroom were cleaned more regularly given the number of students, staff, and parents who use them. The school cafeteria also could be expanded. So--top notch teachers, great principal, facilities need work so we can keep it that way!
If your child is high functioning autistic, do NOT send them here! This school does not have the knowledge of the disorder nor the resources to properly educate children with special needs. The district has minimal resources but anyone with a special needs child knows that minimal is not sufficient. One teacher in particular was great (5th grade) but as a school, they are very poor in resources. They will not understand your child's needs and send DCF to your house instead. Beware. Send your child to a private school instead where they will get the help they need.
We moved from broward county to Highlands county. Lake Placid is absolutely wonderful my son has adhd and was struggling in school in broward county thanks to the care and concern of the staff at lake placid he was on the honor roll all year long it was incredible. In my eyes this school deserves High grades across the board. Keep up the good work!
Wonderful teachers with innovative teaching skills. The degree of enthusiasm and involvement with students is what is most impressive. Parents are somewhat involved, but could be encouraged to do more. Extracurricular programs are good, but more programs specializing in the arts would be an improvement. Children locally are not always able to take advantage of dance & music classes. They have a 5th grade band which is really good for the students. Overall, it was a great school and provided a good foundation for my child's education.
My daughter went to LPMS from K-5th grade. The teachers and principals are very committed to the students and made it a fun, exciting place to learn. The FCAT tests scores don't always tell the whole story - this area has a large % of seasonal farmworkers, most have English as a 2nd language, that makes the test scores lower. They kept my daughter challenged with special curriculum and even moved her to another grade level for certain subjects. While I do think the gifted program for the whole county needs improvements, the program was successful due to an innovative, caring teacher. I chose LPMS over private school.
