Music:The teachers try very hard, the administration has opted out of the State Music competition which gives the students exposure to other schools and the music experience in general. This is apparently an administrative decision which defeats the purpose of having a music magnet school in the first place. Until the administrative attitude changes, I don't see this school being a meaningful part of the overall music program in this State. The teaching in the advanced programs seems to be very good. This opinion is based on the FCAT results of my student. Overall the school did not do well and remains a C school, and not meeting Federal standards. Overall the three years at Parkway were a poor experience, except for the quality of the in-school teaching in the magnet program, which was very good. I see teacher flustration with the poor administration.
Although lacking in excitement and sometimes order, this school is overflowing with artistic stimulation and originality. The performing and visual arts teachers are extremely skilled and display a very elaborate yet easy to understand ciriculum.
I think that this school should focus more on teaching the kids instead of belittling them. Using profanity and down grading kids. they need to get more involved and more extracurricular activities for students and parents.
The school is going through a downsizing of instuctional staff even though there is an almost 300 student increase in anticipated enrollment for Fall 2003. The magnet performing and visual arts programs and the elective courses are taking the hardest hits. The students in the Drama program, for example, are concerned that their Technical Theatre course has been taken away so they no longer have instruction in the basics of set design and construction, costume design, and theatrical makeup. There will be no physical education classes at Parkway this fall. The gym is due to be renovated and the outdoor field and basketball courts are being used to stage the construction so the P.E. teacher was surplused out of the school. Administrative consistency in discipline and consequences is practically nonexistent. It is almost as if each administrator is making up their own set of rules on a daily, sometimes hourly, basis. Faculty and staff morale grows more disheartened from week to week and at times there is almost an 'us vs. them' mentality at play. There are some excellent teachers and programs but they are getting swamped by the mediocrity of the majority of the faculty. A unified dress code beginning this fall is hoped to help reduce fashion related incidents and problems among the students. In short, the FCAT grade of 'C' for the school is totally accurate.
