I loved Edgewood, and I've been there since 7th grade. I am now about to graduate from college and was accepted to Isenberg School of Management at UMass, and I can honestly say that going to Edgewood was an advantage. I currently hold a 3.7 gpa and I owe it all to the extensive preparation and determination of the staff. I breezed though the first two years of college thanks to the coursework we were prepared for. Seriously, if the students and parents would stop complaining about the course load, then take your kid elsewhere because Edgewood prepares you for the REAL WORLD. And when is anything ever easy in the real world?
I am extremely grateful that Edgewood is available to residents of Brevard. I have two students currently attending and am delighted with the education that they are receiving. For all those people who think the curriculum is too rigorous or challenging need to spend some time with our European and Far Eastern counterparts. These expectations would be considered 'the norm'. No wonder the U.S. is falling behind! More schools of choice, like Edgewood, should be available to parents so that the whole lottery system of entry could be avoided. The numbers speak for themselves; multiple applications received every year for every 7th grade place available. Go figure!
My daughter has attended Edgewood since the 7th grade and she is getting ready to graduate this year from high school with her AA degree which was fully paid for by the county. She is fully prepared to attend college and Edgewood was instrumental in that preperation. It is NOT for kids that want to have "fun" in highschool and are overly interested in their social life. It is absolutely the school of "nerds" and they revel in it. The most popular children are the best actors in the drama department and the best students, not the cheerleaders or athletes. All of the classes offered at Edgewood are Honors or AP, there are no easy classes. They do not tolerate bad behavior and they do not hesitate to kick out students that can't maintain at least a C average. It is the perfect school for kids that are high achieving, goal oriented, self-motivated, determined and those who aspire to great educational heights. If they want to be the next footbal phenom, this is not the place for them. I am so grateful to the principle (who was my high school literature teacher at MIHS) for developing this school into what it is today, a school that not only wants nerds for students but caters to them.
My daughter is a senior and has attended Edgewood for the last 6 years. This is a school for kids that what to be challenged in a enviorment where other kids are there to learn. It's nice to have her at a school where the other kids and parents have the same values and beliefs.
Edgewood was not a very fun experience. I went there for middle school and there was no way i was going to stay there another 4 years. You are so sheltered and there is no time to socialize or have any fun. They hardly have any sports and the what they do have arent very good. I have to admit though that the drama department is pretty amazing and a lot of fun. Other than that, school is boring. No school spirit and no homecoming events (other than the dance). I am now a Junior at Merritt Island High and the decision to change schools was the best one i have ever made. At MIHS, the variety of classes are huge and the teachers are a lot nicer and dont stress you out so much. The school is a lot of fun and i absolutly LOVE going to school. If you want your child sheltered from the real world and looked at as a "Nerd" by the rest of the community, then Edgewood is the perfect place. But dont be fooled, its not as great of a school as others make it out to be. I am proud to say that i will be a MIHS graduate instead of a EJSHS one. Hope this was helpful and GO MUSTANGS!!
Edgewood is an accelerated academic college prep school. The curriculum is challenging. Recently the school was recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School and it was also recognized as a National Senior Project Certified School. Outstanding administrative leadership, teaching staff and community.
It is a privilege to have my three children attend Edgewood. They are tackling a rigorous academic schedule, but they are learning how to function independently, challenge themselves, and lead others. They will all be well-prepared for their futures, which include a 4 year college degree. They have many opportunities to participate in sports and other extracurricular activities and have many lots of friends who have similar goals for their futures. I am so grateful to have a school like this available to my children.
Wow, I didn't think it was possible to get, yet another condescending, uncaring counselor. What's wrong with someone who actually like students and is interested in counseling and excited about college admissions?
I rated the school a 4 due only to the success they have had in obtaining high academic scores. However, the prinicipal/guidance staff are extremely inflexible, uncaring and unknowledgeable of what is required from the universities our kids wil be attending. Teacher turnover is high which is understandable due to the hostile environment created in the front office. We had one graduate, one still here and one that transferred to MIHS. FYI - the front office and guidance staff at MI are far superior and MI offeres more choices in AP classes. The expectations at Edgewood are very high and it is put on the students and their parents to assure the success of the student and not for the Edgewood admin or teachers to make it happen. Test scores are impressive but no surprise for this nearly all white, middle-class school with very few free-lunch kids or kids w/disabilities.
We have 3 students enrolled at Edgewood and we think it's a great school! Over the last 5 years that we've been involved with this school, we've come to realize more and more what a privilege it is for our children to attent this school. If you're willing to work hard, the administration, faculty and staff will doing everything in their power to help the parents and the students. The atmosphere is great and yes it's geared towards academics. Our kids love every minute of being at school and often stay late to do extracurricular activities. The school is safe, is not too big and the friends they make are also very motivated. If you willing as both students and parents to strap yourself in, quit the whining, stop looking for excuses and just do it.....this is the school for you....and you'll love it!
This is a great school, but it isn't for everyone, as indicated by some of the negative reviews. If you have a motivated child who needs to avoid the negative peer pressure of unmotivated children this school fits the bill.
My son has attended for two years. He is very happy and challenged. All of the teachers I have had contact with are excellent and attentive. They respond to e-mails within a day and are easily reached for conferences. They care about how the kids are doing. The principal is involved in the school and not just locked in his office. The kids who are there WANT to be there so there are minimal behavior problems. The small class sizes gives the kids more individualized attention so they won't get lost in the shuffle of a larger school. This school is not for everyone. My son is focused so he is able to manage the class load with A's and B's as well as going to club swim practice every night for 2.5 hrs and still watch some TV before bedtime. My daughter looks forward to starting next year.
Horrible school!! It's NOT all what it's cracked up to be! My daughter attended this school for 2 yrs and hated every minute of it. Most of the teachers do NOT teach, they require the student to do way too much work (even outside of class). I know it is supposed to be a 'academic' school, but all the work required is ridiculous!! What are the children learning by not having any time for anything else in their lives???? Some of the administration is ok, but most of them are horrible too! My daughter now attends Merritt Island HS and loves it (as do I). They offer more classes and choices to choose from and the administration is wonderful! They need to change Edgewood back to a regular school and get all new teachers and administration.
Heartless, sadistic administration and adversarial, uncooperative guidance staff make this school one of the worst possible choices in Brevard County. Any concern you bring to their attention gets the same response: 'That doesn't matter!' The message is clear: money, power, and politics are what matters here; not your student. Anywhere else is a better choice.
too much pressure on the kids, i mean seriously. and if u want your kid to be named nerd for the rest of your life, right here's the spot! but really i went there and when i moved i realized how hard edgewood really is. and the 'Diploma of Distingtion'IT DOESN'T MATTER!!! my brother asked a college about it and they didnt even know what it was. it's just fluff to make kids work harder, freak out, stress to the point of no return! but if u want a safe place here you go
This school has been awesome for me! I'm in 8th grade here and I love it~ I have alot of great new friends, and I think I fit in better here then at other schools. Everyone here is nice and I love it. The teachers are all cool and awesome and I have better grades then I ever have before.
I am a senior here at Edgewood and this has been the best experience of my life. The academic program is excellent. The performing arts teacher and program is fun and enjoyable! I have fun and have learned so much more and value every day I'm attending this school.
This will be my childs second yr at edgewood even though the work load is alot ..The way this school makes her feel as a student is wonderful...I can't wait for my other 2 children to be a part of this school....
I go to this school and I my self has found a great improvements in my grades. The teachers will sit you down and help you with what ever you are having trouble with. It is truly a great school. Take that quote from a student that goes there. Even if parents think its not, They don't know if there child is having fun and working hard. Parents don't know how hard this school can really get.
