After my child attended a school in South Florida, she had D'S AND F'S which was NOT her regular grades. After no attempts were made at the previous school to help her, we moved(it was that bad) and found Lewis Carroll Elementary. Our child is back on track, straight A'S presently and has the best teacher ever. It is sad though that other schools will be closing in the area and I only hope the school will stay the same. It has some of the best teachers and one of the best Principal's I have ever encountered.
I love this school! I hav a daughter in sixth grade and another in 3rd grade thet both enjoy this school very much. I have been with this school for 7 years now. This school has a challenging program for gifted students, strings, and many other clubs. However my daughters teachers are very strict on disiplin and handling issues on bullying. No uniforms either. I love this school
Unfortunately, I would not recommend this school to any parent. My concern is the way the teachers, principle & assistant principle handle situations. My child has a hard time adjusting to change. I informed the principle and staff of this problem upon my child entering their school for kindergarten. It hasn't even been 12 weeks into the school year and my child has been passed around from teacher to teacher because they say their patience is low with my child and can not handle the behavior he presents. The child is 5 years old. What do you mean you can not handle behavior issues? They have called the cops on my child and have suspended my child from school totaling over 10 days. The cops have even refused to return to school for such foolishness. My child is not a criminal and doesn't deserve to be treated like one either. One of the kindergarten teachers has even said she feels threatened by my childs actions and refuses to teach my child for the school year. She presented to me the Teachers Authority Law. Less than 12 weeks and this is the 3rd kindergarten teacher placement. I've never heard of a teacher giving up on a student/child. The teachers at Lewis Carroll are selfish.
Lewis Carroll is a great school because the staff and principal really care about the students. The principal does everything she can to ensure the students are getting the very best education while keeping the parents informed and up to date on all that is happening with the school board and politics within the county. Teachers are excellent and professional. My son loves this school!
My child has been attending this school for a couple of years and overall we are very happy with it. Most of the teachers we have encountered are pleasant, knowledgeable, patient, and there because they like teaching. The Principal and Asst. Principal are always present and are available to listen/help. The school is clean and was remodeled in the past few years, so it has a newer feel. A few negatives: The music teacher does not allow the younger children to try any of the instruments. There aren't many extracurricular activities. There is a Lego League, but no information is ever published on it. The staff that patrols the lunch room are not consistent when dealing with children who are getting rowdy. There is a kindergarten teacher who is not a good fit. She has told numerous 5 and 6 year olds that they are not ready for kindergarten.
I feel I must comment on the previous post. The front office has to do more than just sit there and look good. They are the backbone of the school, without them you wouldn't be able to find your student at any given time and they also are the safety moniters which means even if they know you, you're still going to have to show your I.D. to get your child out. I've been in the office when there are up to twenty parents trying to sign in, check their student in or out, going for meetings dropping off or picking up school items. In other words these people are busy so if you feel you're not getting the respect or attention you deserve, think about their day and how many people they deal with!
To the parent who believes their student is receiving only worksheets, workbooks, and tests -- why would you keep your child in a school where this is the curriculum?? I interned at Lewis Carroll and NEVER saw this type of curriculum. If it were the case, I would take my child out immediately. Don't waste money on a private tutor when you could have spent the money to send your child to MICS or Divine Mercy for the same money! I don't think Lewis Carroll uses worksheets and workbooks as their curriculum. But if they did, take your child OUT -- don't make them suffer for four years, then complain.
Lewis Carroll has surpassed all of my expectations on what a school should and could be. Every teacher my daughter has had has been patient and kind, flexibile and resourceful, tolerant and open minded with a good sense of humour. They have been enthusiastic and enjoy teaching. They have been imaginative and creative. I have never seen anything but efficient, self-disciplined, helpful, humble and modest teachers and staff here. I highly recommend this school.
We used this site last year when we moved from Georgia to ease our minds about the schools here in MI. We feel so lucky to have landed at Lewis Carroll. The school staff is so caring and welcoming. Our daughter loves going to school each day. A+
Lewis Carroll is a superb institute. Everyone is friendly and very devoted. My son has been taking speech therapy and OT since he started and the difference is profound. He is more confident in his reading, as well as other skills such as spelling. He loathed spelling tests now he regularly scores 100%. The distinction is the educators as well as the special ed programs that are offered. Lewis Carroll rocks!
I find the tone of the school to be calm and positive, but am not pleased with the approach to teaching. My child has been in this school for 4 years and every year the days are full of dull and tedious worksheets and workbooks. There is not much room for creative and approaches;individual learning styles and needs are ignored. My child more tailored work and remediation. They only send her to remediation once a week! I pay Sylvan top dollar to give her the support that the school should be providing The reading curriculum stresses the workbook and a computer test each child must take whenever they finish reading a book independently. This has made my daughter to feel reading is WORK and not fun. Above average kids do well here, but children in need of extra support don't get enough of it.I feel for those whose can't afford a tutor.
Great school. Staff & teachers do their best with very limited resources which impacts many things including # of students in classes. Lots of involved parents or other volunteers.
My child just completed Kindergarten here and I am very pleased with the school. There was excellent teacher/parent communication and I always felt welcome by teachers and administrators. I like the fact that the principal stood in the front hallway and greeted students and parents at the beginning of the day. As for extracurricular activities since this was the first year of school, there isn't much for young set except for the ones offered through the aftercare program.
One of thebetter schools in Florida. Overall the State needs to provide a higher quality system and gifted classes that are full time rather than one day a week
We have a son in kindergarten at lewis carroll and have been sappointed. The teachers act as if a requirement for getting into kindergarten is specific knowledge of letters, phonics, etc. There's one requirement for admission: age. Entry isn't contingent upon what your child knows. My son has been treated like a leaper since he entered with 'defiencies' in these areas. A lot of the aftercare woman are mean. My son's teacher degrades him and has him coloring for much of the day: he hates to color! i asked for scores of his entrance and other tests and they were never provided to me. The kindergarten children go to a music class with all these purcussion instruments and, get this, they are not allowed to touch them! the teacher does and then they pretend they are playing their 'imaginary' instruments!
I think that the sfety is the biggest issue. The back gate is left unlocked and anyone could come and go as they please. It isn't safe. The teachers for the most part truly care about the students. The principal I believe is doing her best. We are overcrowded because of the district and she has to work twice as hard to maintain a objective view. If you are coming from somewhere else I would suggest not moving into our area becuase our school already has over 300 students above what we should. But if you have to come to Lewis Carroll know you are coming to a school that has dedicated staff members.
We are very impressed with the school, my children went to Lewis Carroll for several years and we moved out of state and when we came back I made sure that they were in the same school district.
It has been two years since my son attended this school. He has still not recovered completely from the negative effects of one of his teachers at this school. We've moved to another school and this school still hasn't sent on the testing information to the new school. I'm not happy with this school and any parent who chooses to submit their child to attendance at this school should be beware.
Both of my children have started school here and one has now moved on to high school. I have the highest praise for all of the staff at this school. They are very caring and helpful with all their students.
