Monticello is the most wonderful place to live, but the schools are unsafe at any grade with no responsibility taken from the schools or the school board. The School board also refuses to test children with learning disabilities, nor do they follow the Florida Board as well as the US Board of Education that demands the opportunity for children to have access to better education in other districts or even safe education. The schools are full of harassment to the minority children and the excuse that allows the bullying and harassment is that they can't control everything that happens in school. The schools are full of ill-equipped teachers which might give excuse for their behavior but the School Board and the Superintendant have too much pride to really care about each child's education that makes up their district. Like my initial response- Monticello is a wonderful place to live- as long as you don't have school aged children.

I have had had my children at this school since kindergarten. However, it was my 5th grader who did well. He was in Mr. Thomas' class. Mr. Thomas was a innovative teacher who kept my child's attention year. He took up a great time with my child and was more like a father figure to him, as well as the rest of the students in his class. He has since moved to Atlanta and will be missed because i definately wanted him to have my unruly 4th grader next year. He has a knack for behavior problem kids.

I have a child with a disability and had to remove him from this school for his own safety two years ago. However, a new principal has arrived this year (2002-03) and a new attitude has begun. I just wish this had happened several years earlier so the school did not suffer. I am eagerly awaiting school scoring this year. Jefferson County is now on the road to success.

About the tests

In 2011-2012 Florida used the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT 2.0) to test students in grades 3 through 10 in reading, 3 through 8 in math, and in grades 5 and 8 in science. The FCAT 2.0 is a standards-based test, which means it measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Florida. The FCAT 2.0 has 5 achievement levels, with level 1 being the lowest and level 5 the highest. Florida considers scores of level 3 and higher to be on or above grade level. The goal is for all students to score at or above level 3.

About the tests

Florida uses School Grades to measure the overall performance of a school each year on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT). Each school is assigned a letter grade (A-F) based on three criteria: the overall performance on the FCAT, the percentage of eligible students who took the test, and whether or not students made progress in reading and math. The School Grades are calculated by adding points earned from each of the performance criteria listed above.
