My child has been at this school 5 years total and while I agree there were some issues a few years ago especially with quality of teaching staff, I feel that many of those issues are improving. Academics is definitely becoming a focal point and my child is challenged by the curriculum. The headmaster has made a difference and is very engaged in the children's lives. I know many reviews have referenced different treatment due to church membership but I've not experienced this. I think there maybe more preferential treatment due to parental involvement (the more involved as a parent you are, the more awards/accolades your child receives), it would be nice to have a more even playing field on that regard but my child has been able to participate or be part of any activity they want. My child is very happy at MDB.
Waiting to see what happens this year! If you are not part of the Church of Christ your child will be treated differently, waiting to see if it changes. Maybe with the new headmaster 2014-2015 will lead the school in a positive direction.
The choices for schools in and around Mount Dora are limited; fortunately, CHBS provides a small-school K-12 environment with decent academics where students are sheltered from the bullying, drugs, and gang issues so prevalent in area public schools. Unfortunately, the academic quality suffers because CHBS hires only Church of Christ teachers and pays them poorly; however, the teachers do cover basics adequately. For $8,000 per year, I'd like academics to be stronger, particularly in AP-level advanced math, science and computer classes; however, I'd also rather provide my child adequate academics taught in a safe environment where personal values come first than in a politically-correct public institution with lots of resources but where bullying and drugs are commonplace. In the 8 years we've been here, my child is very happy at CHBS.
The school is not as good as it looks. A lot of people there are flat out ugly. Some of them are pretty, but have an ugly and evil personality. The teachers are annoying and mean. And the school is SO sexist. Definitely NOT worth the money!!!!
Our children have attended MDB for quite a few years now. In past years, I think MDB has been a good choice for us. This year has been a year we will never forget. They had some switch up in administration, and it has made a world of difference. The headmaster is fully engaged in the students' lives and is transparent and authentic. When we had some concerns at the start of year, he heard us out and met the challenge head on, and the results have been astronomical! Overall moral on campus is better than it has ever been. They seek our opinions and value our feedback. I feel like we have a solid partnership with this school and are getting a great value for our tuition dollars. I am glad we decided to stick it out another year.
Christian Home and Bible is a wonderful school ! Our son has been attending here for 3 years and the progress he is making is nothing less than amazing ! The teachers and staff truly love these kids and go above and beyond to make sure the kids are prepared for the next chapter of their precious lives. Our son loves going to school ! We are very thankful to be a part of such of Christian school family.
This school is the best school ever you will get your money's worth realy fast!!!!! You should see how grate the school is!!!!!! They have drama, band and a ton more. Grate school wish I could give it 1 thousand stars!!!!!
This people are not Christians, you can see a price on Internet and other when you go to the school and ask for information. Be aware of these fake Christians. They just want your money.
As an alum who's about to graduate from college, I have a few things to say about MDB: 1) The school is excellent for elective courses. Art, band, drama, musical theater, and sports are all on par at MDB. 2) I was not adequately prepared for college level english. I took AP English at MDB and barely passed the AP exam; struggled throughout my college writing course. 3) I was not adequately prepared for college level math. I was in "honors" pre-calculus and on the track to take calculus as a senior at MDB. Ended up taking College Algebra and Math for Liberal Arts Majors and struggled. 4) The school is Church of Christ. I learned a lot about my personal beliefs, which do not align with theirs. It was not encouraged to support opposite beliefs. Example: wearing Obama shirt when he won the election in 2008 earned me the scorn of many a teacher and fellow student. 5) They are very flexible with students taking Florida Virtual classes to exapand/catch up on courses. I loved having a dedicated online class period time for FLVS. I was able to add AP credits that were not available at MDB, and take extra classes that I was interested in. As an alum, I hope you find this helpful.
My child attended school here for one and a half years until I removed him from school there. My child first came to this school a Christian but came away not a Christian do to the kind of in your face up tight and not what I would call Christian students and parents that go here. The office staff and most of the teachers are nice and easy to deal with. But some of the teachers are very up tight, don't know all of what they are teaching, and feel sort of an entitlement to be employed here. I would not recommend this school to anyone coming from an enjoyable public school life.
I pulled my son from a quality Christian Private school due to lack of after school activities, and I thought I had found the right school, boy was this a huge waste of money. The after school activities are there, but the academics are terrible. My child is a high achiever, and this school claimed they would meet or exceed his needs. After repeated efforts to resolve the matter with teachers and so on it never happened. Communication is terrible, academics terrible, and there are bullies without a doubt. Stealing is another major issue. The property is beautiful, but the rest is not at all worth the money, time and more importantly your child's education. I moved him not to his old school, but another a charter school actually, and he is back to straight A's and high test scores again.
My son attended MDB for 5 years. I did not realize how much he suffered academically until I transferred him to a public school. His writing skills especially were way below par. If you are not part of the Church of Christ your child will be treated differently. This especially shows up on award day. If you complain to administration, they turn a blind eye and allow your child to be treated differently/poorly from coaches as well as teachers and other staff members.
We selected CH&BS for our child because they met and exceeded our expectations on academics, extracurricular activities, faculty communication, and most important of all, the spiritual emphasis they put into every class and activity. Our child has grown spiritually mature and has learned to STUDY the Bible. We couldn't ask for more.
This spring the school sponsored a mission trip to Panama. What a fantastic experience. The lessons learned will last a lifetime.
CH&BS is a great school offering excellent christian principles. Our family is truly blessed to be part of such a wonderful school in our community!
We have been at CH&BS for ten years. It has been a great experience. Administration is very easy to talk with, teachers are invested in the kids, and parents are welcomed to get involved in all school activities. Great value for our dollar.
The day I called for information, I asked the principal what my child would get in return for the tuition- she jumped down my throat, out of control! Now, I know why the defensive attitude: what we get in return, academically, is not up to par, and very warped "Christianity" i.e. not Christian at all!
I agree with some of the most recent reviews in many ways. For a christian school, when walking through the halls I have noticed bullying type behavior among the students in middle school. It is a family atmosphere but only if you are part of that family and inner circle. Teachers do not respond to emails in a timely manner. If you voice a concern, you (and your child) suffers. Typical private school parental involvement - some are fantastic, incredible people, but most are snooty and far from christian. Academically there is not much difference, other than music and bible. The administration and office staff are outstanding, unfortunately (some) of the teachers and (most) of the parents are simply not.
If you are wanting to see how the children and families interact on campus? Would you like to see how teachers really act with the students outside the classroom? Come to MDB Varsity Football Game September 30th and from 4p-7p the parents and teachers will serve a wonderful Fried Chicken Supper in the Dining Hall (very reasonably priced meal), you will not go away hungry.... eat in or take out You can talk to students, and families....come watch football, see coaches in action, enjoy
If you're looking for a school that: 1. Supports achievement, 2. Has strong partnerships among parents, teachers and students, 3. Challenges it's students, 4. And has high quality and committed teachers, I would highly recommend Christian Home & Bible School. My involvment with the school as a parent spans the past 15 years and overall I have been very happy; not only with the Christian education my children have received, but with the character building traits & skills they heard everyday in Bible and chapel. My kids always wanted to go to school and were very involved in extracurricular activities.
