Teacher effectiveness: Effective
July 06, 2015
At least for AICE classes, the teachers work hard to make sure everyone gets everything they need to know and understand it well. We're given many chances too.

Teacher effectiveness: Very effective

Pass rates are high, and students are getting into college. That means the teachers are doing their jobs. The only issue I can see is that the orchestra teacher is a bit lackadaisical with the students.

Amount of homework: Just right
May 24, 2015
Naturally, with such a rigorous program as AICE, teachers assign a lot of homework. However, it's perfectly reasonable. Even if the student doesn't do homework, they are always well informed of the consequences of not completing the homework and almost always given a chance to make it up.

Develops respect: Agree
May 24, 2015
It's a very diverse environment. There's a fair fraction of the people who attend the school that stand on the fringes of "normalcy," but they're overall accepted all the same. Bullying isn't tolerated - all that needs to be done is speaking up to one of the three guidance counselors, and that's the end of it. Most of the people are very open-minded. Everyone who enters the school is shown repect.

Develops empathy: Strongly agree

North High is a family; we're brought together by respect for the school. It is an arts school, but there's emphasis on academics and sports as well. Students who are determined to do well or have an interest in a specific area of the curriculum. All of the areas of the school are very rigorous, so only send a student here if they're interested in hard work.

North High was an A school up until last year, but that should improve with the new principal. The AICE Program allows the students to easily obtain Bright Futures scholarships, which are applicable to all Florida colleges/universities. North is also an arts school, the Center for the Arts in this zone. Our marching band dominates, we have All State and All County orchestra, band, dance and chorus students, and our visual art/digital art/photography students have placed or won in several competitions. The cross country and track teams are definitely amongst the elites in Lee County. The football team has a very experienced coach who is currently working hard to improve the team. The girls' soccer team won 1st place in the district for the 2014-15 school year, and the boys are working hard to do as well. All in all, North Fort Myers High School Center for the Arts doing really well.

This is a great school and my daughter loves it. She is a straight A student and loves the JROTC program. Yes she comes home exhausted from working hard all day but is up to the challenge. Go Red Knights!!!

NFMHS is the worst school I've attended compared to any school, EVER. This is the only school I've known who blames ME for ME being BULLIED. Students: I should not be treated like a target just because I'm new, or forget to wear red one day. I should not be physically, or emotionally hurt because of you. No one should yell at me every day for unknown reason. I felt like I was in a prison here, this place left me depressed more than anywhere. Staff: I should not be blamed for getting bullied. I should not be ignored when I say I am picked on, or be lied to when you say you'll help me. You never did a thing about me getting bullied and I see that. I saw my friends getting their things destroyed by their bullies. People crying as if they were worried for their safety, and I was afraid to come back. I was an artsy student, you still treated me bad (not that this should matter, no one should be bullied). I'm sorry, but this is the truth, that I experienced, that I went through. That's my recommendation, to never go here.

I have two students of North im my family.A daughter that was a graduate last year and a son who is a junior this year. I feel like they are getting the ultimate high school experience by attending here. So much going on and for them to be involved in.We aremoving to Georgia and it just breaks my heart that my son won't be able to finish his high schooling there.

I currently attend this school. And I am not an artsy person. What if you were sent to this school by a parent and you HAVE to go here? They need more classes other than Chorus 1, Chorus 2, Acting 1 and Acting 2. It s just crazy. From all of the students that switched from here to Island Coast about 5-10, said they like Island Coast a WAY better school. Everyone I know that switched liked it better at their current school. I just think North needs an update. Plus, this school is so old and its outside (which is NOT FUN during the summer in Florida!!). The school has cracks on the second floor in the hallways and there are cracks in the walls of the office. It is a very old school. I get anxiety walking upstairs. I can t look at the ground. The teachers do care about your grades. But don't put an effort on you. Plus, some assign WAY to much work. I am trying to get my parents to let me switch out of here next semester. On the outside and at the events North looks like a fantastic school and that's what I thought but it's nothing what I expected it to be. The bullying is OUTRAGEOUS here also. Take it from a current student that CAN NOT stand it here.

Removing my daughter from this school, due to bullying. Constant harrassment by girls who are complete thugs inside and outside the school. The students absolutely rule the school and the administration has no control over the constant harrassment. Due yourself a favor and choose another school!!!

The school itself is good, some of the teachers however, need to be replaced. Alot of them are VERY rude and do not teach well. The programs offered at North are very limited too.

Better school? Where? North High is an A school. Our gifted daughter will be a freshmen next year in their new AICE program, and she's ecstatic since most of her friends are going to North as well. Their AICE teachers in particular are just phenomenal. Its easy to toss out rumors about fights and bullying. If you really want to see what the school is like, visit their web site and schedule a tour like we did. Then you'll be able to see (and judge) for yourself. I think you'll be just as impressed as we were...

Honestly...find a better school. My daughter has several teachers who put no effort into class assignments. There are fights in the lunch room every week, and the bullying is out of control. This principal has her head in the sand with the discipline.

An outstanding school. Back-to-back A ratings, great school spirit, and now a magnet for kids interested in design and technology. Their web site is second to none. The school has come a long way from years past, and now ranks just behind Fort Myers...

I agree that this is a great school but I give credit to the students who attend there. I feel that Ms. Lunger and all staff need to be more supportive of the arts program. This IS an ART school. I did not see Ms. Lunger attend any of the dance performances in the 2008-2009 school year and that is very discouraging considering she attends the sports games. It takes a lot of dedication and muscle strength for these dancers to achieve their skill & they need to see that their principal appreciates what they represent. I hope to see more support in the coming year.

This school has a wonderful art program. Its principal, Mrs. Lunger, is very sctrict but she gets along great with the students. Fights are considered very serious here, I have never seen a school punish fighting as seriously as North High. The teachers are very willing to communicate with parents and work great with the kids. Most teachers will help students after school if they need it. There are a wonderful amount of clubs and extracurricular activities. There also are many oppurtunities to get community service hours. There are a good variety of electives ranging from arts to foreign languages to many great computer related classes and many more. I think anyone would enjoy going to this high school. I also believe that any parent would enjoy sending their child there because the staff is very open and friendly.

This school is excellent. Even though it is an arts school they have a large focus on academics such as math and science. The security is very tight at the school and thanks to the security cameras placed around they can monitor almost every corner of the campus.

It's an 'arts school,' yet all the teachers and staff focus all of their attention on superfluous activities like sports instead of the arts program. Unfortunately, it seems like this will never be corrected.

North Fort Myers High School was my first choice school to attend. Much of family attended North, going back a generation, all with positive reviews. North has a great principal and arts program. I would recommend this school.

Most of the teachers and support staff at North High are wonderful and really have an interest in the welfare of the students, but some of them just move the children along. Dress code and discipline are non-existent and since it is an open campus students come and go unauthorized especially during lunchtime. Students this year were also unable to do research or printing reports in school due to the fact that they took away all the computers those students had access to. If students do not have a computer at home they have to go to the public library to get their work done. Since North High has become the school of the arts it has not changed for the better unless you want your child in band or chorus. For the student not in arts they get left behind.

from what i understand there are a few teachers there that would bend over backwards to help the kids in the school, but there are some teachers that just keep pushing the children along so they don't have to be bothered with them again next year.

North High is a great educational experience for students. I have 1 major concern about my childrens attendance to this school. It is just way to easy for students to walk off campus anytime of the day. I also know for a fact how simple it is for anyone to walk on to campus and around it unnoticed.

North is an open campus school, which does not make for perfect student control. However the teachers are excellent, the guidance and administrative areas are better than Mariner and Cape, and the overall educational opportunities are the best in the West Zone. My son is in band. The band is exceptional and has a relaxed but well structured environment. Several students in the North band have transferred to North from Ft Myers, CYCA, Mariner and Cape just to be in the band. If your kid wants a good education, and wants to be in band, this is the best choice in the county.

INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.
