Profile Completeness

INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

I attended Duncan for three years and did not like it. Pros: Nice size classrooms. Cons: Bad finance academy, teachers give you homework but never teach you, bad exterior looks, I'm very angry that now all foreign languages are now virtual, pointless advanced program same as gifted, horrible food, let you take high school courses in 6th grade, too much cursing, Chinese has a bad teacher, teachers blame everything on you, no security cameras in classes, also they waste money on "touchscreen Windows 8 laptops" and they say they have a tight budget. I think I have listed all the cons I know right now, it is only my second year.

I am in the finance academy. The teachers for almost all subjects are rude, don't teach, and expect you to know everything by reviewing it once. Some just tell you to read the chapter and expect you to know everything about it. The food sucks, their is little parent involvement,, the fundraisers are stupid, and it is cramped. Not many people don't get into the finance academy or art academy. Alk foreign languages are on the computer. Gifted and advanced are pretty much the same.

Wonderful , busy school with lots of opportunity. My daughter went here and loved chorus with Mrs. Butterfield. Also, my son is in the finance academy entering into 8th grade. He has learned in the academy amazing things related to business. Although he doesn't like the dressing professional , the once a year field trips are amazing. Food needs a lot of improvement! Need more parent -teacher interaction too. Need more help in student service office.

I thought this school was good but it is terrible! I was zoned for it and hated it! I started with straight A's but then went down to C's because they let you take any course you want! I was allowed to take high school courses in the 6th grade! I received no warning! So now my dream to go to Suncoast high is nothing. All because of Watson B Duncan Middle School.

If I could rate Principal Leadership zero, I would. They are condescending and disengaged from parent concerns. Perhaps if you are a nerdy mom who only lives to have a career PTO life will they relate with you. And with a population of 1500+ kids, it seems that apparently they (the administration) is above making mistakes. Sorry to tell you that you are tax funded personnell, not God.

If your child is in the Gifted program or AP this school is an excellent choice. The principal, Dr Jose Garcia is so dedicated to the school and the students. Even while most public schools have cut so many programs due to budgets, this school still encourages/supports student achievement with award ceremonies and parties for Honor roll each quarter. As well, security is taken very seriously as demonstrated by the full time Officer John on campus, the kids call him OJ and adore him. I have been most satisfied overall with my child's teachers but (3) really stand out as going above and beyond and they are Ms Bonnie Butterfield chorus; Ms Griffith Language Arts; Ms Ahearn Social Studies. We will miss them greatly next year for highschool. Any 'issue' that needs addressing is dealt with prommptly. I would definately give this school a try!

I would NOT recommend this school to anyone. Too many kids, very little supervison, lots of bullying, overall a stressful and not very friendly athmosphere.

This is my first year at Duncan, well its almost over, but the school is by far a good one just a few fights, the teachers are great, and i was failing math but the Compass learning odyssey program saved me.Also if your child wants to join band or chorus they have great teachers,Mrs.Roggen (Band) and Mrs.Butterfield (chorus) are both wonderful and helpful teachers.

Oh my goodness, I atteneded Duncan all three years. I graduated last year. That must have been the best experience of my life, what with making new friends to last a lifetime and having absolutely amazing teachers! I wish I could repeat my 8th grade year-completely unforgettable. There are constant fights, I won't deny that, but hang around the right people and it's fine. GO DUNCAN!

This is myssecond year at Duncan. It is a great school, including activities, sports, and clubs. All the teachers are very nice and well mannered. All the teachers inspired me to put my heart out and never give up, fight for what you want, quoted by Mrs. Turnquist ( Lang. Arts 6th grade). This school rocks! BY AO

This school is supposed to be a good school. Which overall it is. But when the kids go to a guidance counsler complaining that they dont like certain teachers, they should be listened to, because it affects there learning. Some of the teachers need to learn to either toughen up, or lossen down!

The principal seems to be unhappy in this position. I think the move was not a good one. I wish the District would stop moving principals. Last year my child did so well but this year I worry. When the staff is unhappy it makes it hard on the students

I went to this middle school for the 3 years I had to and it was the best time of my life. I was easily getting A's and learning the material I needed. The people there are amazing and every one is different and your not being judged all the time. I am now a 9th grader and if anything, I missed watson B duncan middle school most.

It is almost impossible to get a conference with a teacher because most of the teachers at Duncan Middle School do not call parents to tell them if a student is falling behind in their class Unless you have Ed Line you will never know anything until your son/ daughter gets their report card; then it is too late.

This school is great! I went to duncan for one year and it was the best year ever. As long as you hang out with the right crowds you're pretty much alright. The teachers are wonderful and cooperative, they really know how to bring out the fun in learning. This is a great place to make friends and learn about character and real life.

I'm atteding at this school, it's a very nice school; but the students are undisciplined, about 60% percent of the students in a classroom they don't want to learn almost anything and they show little respect for classmates and teachers. I also believe that this school has lost alot of prestigue in many aspects by the students and by the few mediocre teachers. If your child wants to come to this school, he has to be in Advanced or Honors classes in order to enjoy it.

My children attended 6th and 8th grade at Duncan; it was the worst school year of their lives. My daughter, who loves to learn, hated everyday. My son felt like an outsider everyday. It is run like a boot camp with good kids punished along with the troubled ones. Thankfully, they are in new school now. So much for 'A' rated!

This school has been a disappointment to both my children. My oldest is now in High School and wonders how he got through Duncan. My other child is an honor student and was very involved in the school until some bully decided to cause a fight, which my child, the injured victim, was suspended with the repeat aggressor. Safety is a concern as well as fair treatment by administration. This, by far, did not fit into 'zero tolerance' and is being disputed.

My daughter attended Watson B. Duncan Middle school for 7th & 8th grade. She had caring, well-educated teachers and blossomed with the pleasant open atmosphere. My daughter enjoyed the campus, the library, clean cafeteria and good sized classrooms. The school is within walking distance of our home so we don't know anything about the bus transportation to Duncan. I chaperoned a couple of field trips, one to the Kravis Center for a play. Her teachers were always pleasant and encouraged parental involvement.

During my time attending Duncan Middle School I have expanded my brain to an exceptional size. The diversity of the different cultures and the very little narrow-minded people have made me come out of my middle school career with great memories, more talents, and a sharper mind in which I will us in my upcoming future. The great curriculums in Math, Science,History,English, and the many enlightening foreign languages has supplied the many students with an enormous amount of information like French,Chinese, and Spanish languages. Along with the many foreign languages the extracurricular actities and the availability of interactive sports, music(chorus and band), and art has made the normalcy of a student's life more bearable. The variety of after-school programs are alway fun-filled and together with the electives they will sure to pass the day quickly.

There is no respect for the individual student. They do not value or honor the student. They (most of the teachers) belittle, embarrass and harrass the children. These words which came from another middle school re; duncan and their staff i think sums it up; 'oh, duncan. Well, we are not like duncan here. We respect the individual student and value them as a person. And we of course expect the same in return.' Duncan really could use someone outside to clean house and get staff that not only know how to spell correctly, teach, but can 'encourage' the child, not destroy. Oh, and the safety, officer ferrell is on a permanent vacation!
