Hello to everyone, I received notification that a new review was posted and had to read it. I am a parent of a child at Athenian Academy of Pinellas. I obviously do not have the answer to the comment just posted, I do not have financial info on the school. Yes I agree there are many issues however, most of them in the process of been resolved. The school has been looking for some time to relocate but this is a very lengthy process. With that said I understand why no money is spent on the upkeep of the building except for the absolutely necessary. Part of the playground was removed because it was unsafe and was not aware there still are issues with it. I am sure the staff would address the issue if mentioned directly to them. As far as the bus goes they are as well looking to purchase a new one. While the school might not have a great building I must say they have great staff, teachers, families, and very good kids. I highly recommend it :)
I dont know how this charter school can come up with the additional money to pay the former board president a salary, yet it cannot repair or replace the playground equipment. My child comes home with splinters in their hand, or a self report from some kind of small injury. The bus is another issue...it has no air conditioning which is unacceptable in Florida.
My son has almost completed his second year at Athenian Academy. He really loves his teachers and going to school and that's the most important thing. He's gotten the extra help with reading when he needed it. You can really tell the staff love what they do and care deeply for the kids. This was our best option outside of the poorly rated public elementary school we are zoned for. We are so happy that we were able to get into the school. Our youngest is a year out from kindergarten, but he will be going here as well. The only reason I didn't rate the school 5 stars is due to the fact that the playground and physical education areas are very small. The "auditorium" where they host plays and school events is also very cramped at this location. Rumor has it the school will be moving to another location in Dunedin however that will more than likely resolve these issues.
Athenian Academy is a small K-8 charter school. They have a strong language program with classes in Greek and Spanish. All the children, staff members, and parents are a great family oriented group where we all know each other. Kids truly enjoy the small and nurturing environment they are in. If you are looking for a school that is truly dedicated to their children we highly recommend Athenian Academy of Pinellas
Excellent school! Feels like you're right at home. Wonderful hospitality, great teachers and incredible school spirit. Go Athenian Academy!
My son loves the school, the staff is very nice and friendly, they treat the kids as their own and that is what make the difference.
Athenian Academy, great school, friendly staff members, sweet and caring teachers, caring and concerned parents, and last but not least GREAT KIDS. We are very pleased with the overall education our son is receiving. Could not ask for a better school.
This school is unorganized and frustrating for a parent. The building is old and unclean. The playground is absolutly dangerous with old and broken equipment. The school is unsafe and unsanitary for children. The school says there is small class sizes but in reality they are just as large and some classes larger than public school. Also, my child after going here still does not know any Greek or Spanish. The principal is never seen and is not qualified to be a principal. I have realized after speaking with teachers who work there that their own children do not even attend. ???
The idea of learning spanish and greek at the same time is great if they are being taught english grammer first. We delt with constant bickering and bullying, our child came home and cried every night. The children were expected to be able to write a fully developed paragraph before they knew sentance structure. The reading teacher autisim to be the same as ADD. Finally, the reading teacher told us our child was malnourished, had to many bosses (we live with my parents), not sleeping, not getting enough sleep, wasn't diciplined enough, and finally, she was neglected. Our child actually forgot concepts learned in previous grades and I had to hire a tutor two days a week to keep her on track.
I don't understand the negative review I am a Athenian academy student and I love it the teacher are great and really care and the Greek teacher are great to I have had a full conversation with a greek person and I didn't mess up at all the spanish teacher do the same I don't know why there our all these negative reviews but to tell you the truth this school is great and I would know as a student
Our first year at Athenian Academy and it has been a wonderful experience. Have a student in middle school and have found the staff and faculty to be the best. I hope I can find a high school that can meet the standards set by Athenian Academy.
My child first year in the school. He is as happy as I am. He had a terrible experience last year in a A+ public school. He is in first grade, he love his teacher, I love the family enviroment. I am so glad I found this school. Thanks to all the teachers and staff for the hard work.
This school has caring teachers and staff that work together like a family. The children are kinder and more respectful to one another than at my child's previous school, which was considered a very good school.
I love the family atmosphere of the school! The teachers are great! They work well with your child! I have a fundmental student and an Athenian Academy student. My only complaint with this school is I wish they would give more homework. I am a hands on parent and BELIEVE in participating in my childs academic growth! The parents are encouraged to work with their children, which increases the success rate of your child in the academic world. They should include the parent involvement clause in the annual contract we sign each school year, so parents know that they alyear!
I just read the most recent post on this school- wow. I have never had a negative experience with this school! I find the homework to be minimal, and there are several ways for the kids and parents to get help if they need it. The teachers use the county portal, school planners, email and some teachers even give you a home telephone number. This school is a "charter" and they don't have the luxuries other public schools have, like a large pool of substitutes. I love this school and my son will attend as long as possible. Everyone knows me and my child. I don't have to worry about over-crowding, or drugs. These people really care ! Try going down the street to another "public" school and see how they treat you!
Children are sent home with copious Homework assignments, most of the time the children do not know the answers to or unable to read the instructions for their Homework, requiring parents to teach & hover! Something wrong when School requires parents, to do their, teaching job. I told my son to send the work back to school uncompleted, w/ an explanation note, if the children cannot complete the assignments on their own. Have three grandchildren in this School. Weeknights are usually filled with overwhelming Homework. No family or reading time remains after homework is completed. Look at the students "projects" obvious most are done by the parents. A 3rd grade Teacher left and her class was divided between the other two third grades!! What a disruption to all!
True "School Leaders" are more than policy enforcers. They are people who love children. They are people who understand that there is a reason behind every behavior. They are willing to listen to children and parents and take the time to first understand and then make an informed decsion. "Everything and Anything" is not allowed at Athenian Academy. We have a safe school, we have a drug free school, we have a school where children are not numbers, they are individuals with unique needs and personalities and are treated on an individual basis. One size never fits all! That is part of what makes Athenian Academy "different" The school leader can't make everyone happy all the time and if it was you or your child she took the time to understand and listen to, you might feel a little differently.
5th year at Athenian Academy. My childs grades have exceeded my expectations and she is now fluent in both Greek and Spanish. FCAT scores were fantastic. Great job teachers! Thankyou!!!
My child started at AAP last year and though he had a wonderful teacher then, this year has been a totally different experience. I see a lack of true leadership from the school leader. Consequences for less than stellar behavior are spelled out but never followed through with, creating an environment where children know they can get away with anything. I have had very little communication from the teacher, and am not at all happy with how this year progressed. On the plus side, the kids learn Greek and Spanish every day, get recess and PE every day, and the PTA has done some great things. Overall, I wouldn't go out of my way to keep my child at this school and probably won't.
couldn't be happier, teachers and staff go out of their way to givi kids the best learning experience .
