We are very happy with Madeira Beach. Our children love their teachers, and the administration is fantastic.
This school is crazy about discipline, to the detriment of true learning. The kids are punished constantly for everything, with very little teacher discretion. 5-13-year olds run around crying, worrying about infractions and being kicked out. Kids who skip 2 or 3 steps on the sidewalk instead of walking quietly are given infractions. 9 out of 10 math homework problems is not good enough and students still get demerits. They act like they're a great school because the demographics account for good test scores, but the kids learn to be mean-spirited and think they are entitled.
My children have gone to Madiera Beach Fundamental since its inception. We have some great teachers. However, the principal lacks true leadership ability. He does not empower his team with authority of any kind. They are not allowed to make basic judgement decisions. And as such, they rule from the point of fear. I do not believe that this environment fosters the spirit of our children. The principals attitude is "If you don't like it then leave! We have a waiting list of people." It's truly unfortunate because this could be a great school. There is more parent involvement then I have seen at other schools. However, Mr. Ateek makes it very clear that if you don't play by his rules he will shut the PTSA down. This was not the intention of a PTSA when it was founded and I think it is appalling for him represent it as such.
My son has been a student at MBFS for the past three years. It has been a wonderful experience every year. The principal is very involved in all aspects of the school. The teachers and staff are Fantastic ! The family involvement is welcomed and expected. There are events throughout the year that brings the entire school together K-8. We are truly blessed to have such a great school.
Wow what an amazing school. The staff is amazing...great transition from elementary to Middle...it's like sending your child to school at a family members home. Mr Ateek is on top of everything from grades to proper conduct and goes out of his way to ensure an enviroment that encourages learning and model behavior. I love this school and can not say enough.
Maderia Beach Fundamental is the worst middle school, because of the Principal. He is always on his cell phone checking it for emails. He doesn't even acknowledge the parents as he is walking by them. He belongs more ion the elementary side not the middle school side. I have two children there, but I will send them to Thurgood Marshall. The Principal is more hands on, and makes the parents feel important.. Madeira has good teachers, but bad leadership.
Fundamental schools (all fundamental) not just Madeira Beach, their are more expectations on the students. One thing I noticed at Madeira Beach is the principal is always checking his phone for e mails. I find this very rude when you are talking to the principal of your child's school and the principal is reading e mails on his cell phone. I also find the front office of the elementary school not very welcoming. Since this was their first year as a fundamental school I think there are still some things that need to work on.
I just graduated mad beach this year as an eighth grader. I have been in the fundamental program since kindergarten, so it was easy for me to make the transfer. I personally LOVED my year at mad beach. The environment is fun and upbeat. As a student you do have to work though. If you havent been in the fundamental system before, it will take some getting used to. But this system DOES make you do work, and helps to be successful. I would strongly recommend this school.
This is our first year at Madeira Beach Fundamental Middle school. My son is in 8th grade. He came from a very small charter school the previous year. he finds Mad Beach more challenging. The environment is excellent and the level of teaching is in general meets or exceeds expectations. I highly recommend this school.
I love this school! I dislike how it's fundamental, although everyone says it's better, but hey, it's better than turning it into some sort of golf resort or something. All the teachers I've met were really nice, including the ones I have now. I like my courses, especially Band and Oceanography. Too bad Oceanography isn't year-long.
It is very true that Madeira Beach Middle is one sad school. So glad it is going Fundamental and getting rid of Ms. Poff with a new principal. I worked there so I know how lousy it is. Homework is sparse, communication is lousy, and believe me, I communicated - I was even there to ask, and was hated for doing so. I check parent connect, which doesn't list everything, every week, go to all the meetings, was in the PTA (which totally stinks) Madeira Beach Elementary was like this too. I bet you if you test a Madeira Beach student with another student in a private school or fundamental, that student would win hands down with knowledge. Get in line now to sign up though since it's changing to a fundamental program where communication is the key. Love to see how they'll pull this one off.
My daughter has been going to this School for the last two years and the teachers are very helpful and respond to everything I may need via email or call, to let me know the status of my daughters grades as I check them through Parent Connect daily to keep up with her. She has found that she gets caught in the wrong crowd and is a big social butterfly and this has caused her issues and makes me and her father stay on top of her to get good grades. She has received Honor Roll a few times and misses it by a couple C's and that makes her try harder once this happens. I would recommend this School just watch as they grow and change throughout the years.
This is my daughter's first year at Madeira Beach Middle and she loves it. She is on the principal's list and likes all her teacher's. She loves the fact that the school offers a marine biology course which she will be in next year. And you can't beat the atmosphere being on the water. She loves the view from her homeroom. She does get a good amount of homework but she is very independent and it all gets done and in a timely manner. Some of her teacher's go out of there way to let me know what a great student she is and that is definitely a positive side for her and I. The principal is very nice as well and seems very into the school and it's education goals and reputation. So far to my daughter and I we are both pleased with Madeira Beach middle school. Great School.
This is my sons 3rd year at this school and I would like to say that this school has a fantastic band program but the incoming students need to be prepared. Mr Tag is a very dedicated band teacher and makes the children work very hard to succeed. As far as the academics, I believe that the children are not challenged enough in this school and the homework is a joke. There is no homework!! Also, the no lockers for the students does not prepare them for the future.
My daughter just completed 8th grade at the school, she has been there all 3 years for middle school and she loved the school- she actually cried the last day of school because she knew she would never come back to MBMS!! The band director Mr Tag was fantastic, really took an interest in the kids. I have nothing but good things to say about the school.
As a 6 year employee of MBMS, I find some of the reviews (older ones) very negative. I would have to ask if the parental involvement was at the high end of the scale. Did YOU communicate with the staff? How was your child's discipline? How often did you attend a parent conference? How often were you on campus? All of these factors are critical to a child's success. For the record, progress reports ARE sent home each marking period except the 1st. PARENT CONNECT is a computer notification of grades and attendance that is now in effect. I recommend all parents sign up for it to stay informed. Lastly, anytime you have a question, please call to get it answered rather than believe the children. We ARE here to help. This is a great school and a great place to work and learn.
I am the legal guardian of a 14 year old boy who just moved here from Maryland. He had a difficult time in Md. and was failing almost every class. The teachers here at Madeira Beach have gone above and beyond to help him and he is now passing every class. I love the teachers, the atmosphere and the dedication to seeing the children succeed. This is the first time in his life that he actually LOVES his school and the teachers. It is helping to turn his life around. I only wish I had gotten him in 6th grade but I'm glad to have him in 8th.
Music, art and science are terrific, and the setting can't be beat. The teachers care about their students, and problem behaviors are addressed consistently and possitively.
Quality of academic programs are A+ Availability of music A+, art, sports and other extracurricular activities are A+ Level of parent involvement are A+.
