summerfield crossing has a lot of work to do for me to consider it a good school. first day last year my son took a book to lunch to read and forgot the book, when he went back he found out the lunch lady threw it out!!! a BOOK!!!! the lunch room is a big problem, wait lines are so long that some kids only get 4 mins to sot and eat. my son has come home starving b.c he didn't get to eat his lunch before he had to go back to class. another issue is the ELP after school help, my son went for a little while but i pulled him out b.c all they did was play! he came home with a bag of paper airplanes he and some friends made. this is supposed to after school help for reading and math not build airplanes for two hours.when i asked him about it he said they play a lot. its infuriating! the wait to pick up your kids at the gate is so long! school is out at 215 but they don't actually walk out of the school till 225-230! that's 15 mins of the hot Florida weather, by the time i get them home they are so thirsty and dehydrated! when you asked to talk to the principal or assistant principal they will tell you they are out of campus but don't be fooled i have seen the assistant sitting in her office when i asked to meet with her before. bottom line is if you can send your children to the other summerfield school do it! save yourself a headache

This school fails at being educators. Education takes a variety of forms including discipline, social, and behavioral as well as academics. They talk a good talk and they will tell you have much they like your child and think they are great but when it comes to down to the reality of being adults in charge and educating, they have a completely different action. I was even spoken to about the incidents per child and how proud they were because it was so low (in their opinion). I now suspect that it is low because the remove all children that do not fit their definition of normal. Not every child is the same and when a child falls out of what they deem as normal, they ship them off to another school so they do not have actually be responsible and educate the child. Yes my child has issues to deal with, I am being a parent and getting them resolved. It takes time to help children, I expected the educators to be part of that solution, not to ship them off somewhere else...but that's what they did. We don't have "the tools" to help your child...are you kidding me? What copout. What happened to our schools? If you have a choice, make it another school.

The school staff are always very professional, courteous and helpful I'm very impress. The only area right no which I believe needs little bit improvement. My kids' teachers is great and we couldn't be happier with his educational progress. The school is family-oriented which is something that's very important to us. I would definitely recommend this school to anyone looking for quality education/staff and a safe environment for their children. I would put a Motivated Volunteer program in place to re enforce all areas including the cafeteria which can definitely use some help, the staff there does a good job but their is space for improvement. I been volunteering some time and I enjoy going to the school everyday... I'm open for offering helping hands to my school....

We have all 4 of our children at this school now for 2 years and have nothing but great things to say about this school. All our children are academically striving with awesome teachers who sincerely care. I am also a volunteer at the school and found this also helps to see the love and kindness that is shown throughout all the staff. The school may not have as higher rating as some other hillsborough schools however not all of us have the financial ability to live in those school districts and with that being said hope everyone also realizes those schools also require much parental involvement and perhaps if more parents spent more time getting involved with the school and especially their children then that would also help.

We are extremely happy at this school. The staff and leadership ae always very professional, courteous and helpful. Our kids' teachers are great and we couldn't be happier with their progress. I love all the programs and family events they coordinate. Its very family-oriented which is something that's very important to us. One day I had a question about testing and the Principal stopped what he was doing and answered all my questions. I really appreciated that. I would recommend this school to anyone looking for family friendly, quality education/staff and a safe environment for your children.

I am a grandma to a new kindergarden child. School started today and I was very impressed with the security in place to protect our loved one. Thanks so much. My grandkids are my life!

At first I was impressed by meeting the principal and seeing the school, but then my experiences have said otherwise. We recently moved here and have had the worst experiences yet, for my child. I thought this was going to be a great school, here in florida, but from all of our experiences, I would say otherwise. If we did not live in this area then I would not choose this school. I am hoping to have a better year this upcoming school year but am still considering private schools. I will say that I do like how secure their school is but there is much more to a school but that. I wish the education systems in the US would change.

This school is okay. In fourth grade my teachers were mean and rough on us and we could be natural. It was like a boarding school. But in third gread I loved my teacher. She was the best teacher I have ever had! So If you child is going into third grade at this school they do so many great things but if they are going into fourth grade I don't recommend it. My sister was in first and second grade when we were there for two years. When she was in first grade she kind of liked her teacher so I might recommend it for your child if they are going into first grade but in second grade she loved her teacher very much and was sad when the school year ended so I do recommend it if your child is going into second grade. So this school is okay.

Both of my boys attended this school. I choiced them in due to the quality of elementary schools in the area. The staff is second to none. As with most schools, there are challenges with a few of the teachers. Luckily both of my boys had wonderful teachers. I was fortunate to be able to volunteer everyday. I couldn't find a better school to work with... except the PTA. They need help and better leadership. As far as the curriculum, it is district and state mandated. If there is a problem with what is being taught, it should be addressed at the district level. The school can only do so much...

Wonderful school... we find that the teachers are very attentive to their students & keep us very well informed about all 3 of our children that go here. Appropriate amount of homework given. All staff & teachers are super friendly & seem to genuinely care about the kids & parents. Highly recommend this school.

Ditto on the the Sept 23rd poster's comments. We, too, moved from PA and found that some of the things they are teaching in first grade have been taught to my son in kindergarten. While we had reservations about my son's teacher in the beginning, she has done well in keeping us informed of our son's progress and her expectations for the class.

This was our first year here and it was a great experience! Both my children showed much improvement in their grades coming from another school in the area. The teachers are wonderful - very sweet, caring and thoughtful. The school was given an 'A' rating this year. Very excited about a second year here!

This was the innagural year for the school and what a year it was. My son's kindergarten teacher was exceptional, She paid attention making sure as a left-handed student, he knew the proper way to write letters and read books. He finished above grade level and is excited to return in the fall. The entire staff is always so helpful and the PTA is deligient about being there for the school.

This was the first year at Summerfield Crossings for our son. We moved here from California and since it's a new school, we must confess we were worried about having no feedback or ratings since our son has ADD and we were concerned about teacher/staff knowledge of working with children with ADD. Not only did the staff aleviate our fears, they exceeded our expectations. His homeroom teacher, Mrs Velasco, had years of experience working with children with ADD. She and the other staff who worked with our son, Mrs Burke and Mrs Lynn, were knowledgeable, caring, and helpful, providing great feedback about his progress throughout the year. Dr Cantrel, the Principal, can frequently be seen outside helping arriving or departing students by opening car doors, directing activities, or just being concerned about safety/security. This school has a special staff, an active PTA, and we couldn't be happier!

Profile Completeness

INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school's profile?

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.
