At the open house this year, the 5th grade teachers assured parents that students wouldn t be inundated with useless busy work at home for hw bc they understood that kids need time to do extracurricular activities and play, etc. So far I think we ve spent just about every single weekend doing tons of homework. The 5th grade teachers also find it acceptable to punish all kids in class, even when it is just a few acting out. This is done by making the kids sit in assigned seats during lunch and making them sit silently. So the ONLY time kids are allowed to socialize and take a breather, which is during a meal, is turned into punishment. The kids who behave well get very discouraged being constantly berated by 1 teacher in particular who apparently has had disciplinary problems in the past but for whatever reason, the administration allows her to continually verbally abuse the children. There are no school counselors available that the children can turn to for help because the school does not employ any. In fact, they don t even offer any electives for middle school kids.
I just want to say that the middle school teachers at SoMi have clearly symbolized teamwork. Mrs. Rivas, Mrs. Rossi, Mr. Fanjul, I am proud to have taught alongside such amazing and dedicated educators as yourselves. I will miss you dearly! Mr. Fanjul will also be continuing the Close Up Washington D.C. program to enhance his social studies curriculum. Go SoMi Middle!
