My child attends the Infinity program at Ludlam. It was tough getting her in this year with cutbacks and staffing delays, but well worth it. The Infinity program is like having a private school within a public school. My daughter has really excelled and has learned so much in just 3 months. I am very impressed with the curriculum, the teachers and the principal. The work is very hard, and she has a lot of homework, but she seems to be doing really well. Her report card came in with all E's!!! Way to go Ludlam. Parents should really consider this school when choosing a gifted program for their child. Excellent!

This school is excellent. I disagree with the rating 5. It's not fair at all. I wish the best to the new administrative staff.

My children who are in 3rd grade love the teachers and the school. I have been pleasantly pleased as well. I only wish the police were still able to be there in the afternoon when I come to pick them up. This was a sad change that occurred this year.

I'm a parent of a 5th grader: the gifted program is very good, but tends to disappear by 5th grade, I guess due to FCAT stress. Security is excellent thanks to the unbelievable Ms Williams. Counselor looks committed but is not quite consistent. Principal very executive. There is some bullying in the cafeteria and the PE field but unfortunately teachers don't follow through...Honestly my expectations went down from a 10 in 1st and 2nd grade to a 4 by 5th.

My daughter has been at Ludlam for 3 years in the gifted program. We have only had one year of difficult work and the rest has been okay. The school and staff are wonderful. It is very community and family friendly and the focus is the children and their education. We really have only had good experiences with Ludlam.

I can only speak to the gifted program at Ludlam. In my opinion, there is too much emphasis on having children in the gifted program perform above grade level, and too little attention given to the gifted child's needs. In our experience, we have never seen any gifted curriculum or creative thinking exercises. Simply put, the kids are required to work at at least one grade level beyond their actual grade. This is not what gifted programs are all about. Instead of stressing the kids out, and giving them tons of work, more emphasis needs to be placed on critical thinking, creative problem solving, and enriching curriculum. Quite frankly, these kids are being burned out, and that is a shame.

About the tests

In 2011-2012 Florida used the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT 2.0) to test students in grades 3 through 10 in reading, 3 through 8 in math, and in grades 5 and 8 in science. The FCAT 2.0 is a standards-based test, which means it measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Florida. The FCAT 2.0 has 5 achievement levels, with level 1 being the lowest and level 5 the highest. Florida considers scores of level 3 and higher to be on or above grade level. The goal is for all students to score at or above level 3.

About the tests

Florida uses School Grades to measure the overall performance of a school each year on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT). Each school is assigned a letter grade (A-F) based on three criteria: the overall performance on the FCAT, the percentage of eligible students who took the test, and whether or not students made progress in reading and math. The School Grades are calculated by adding points earned from each of the performance criteria listed above.
