My son attended 3rd grade at KS, after having had K-2 in a great school in another state. Almost immediately he began to complain of being bored, other children being disruptive, older children bullying him in the hallways (actual physical contact). I passed this off as "new school blues" and assured him it would get better. Then he was threatened by two older boys who were just hanging out in the restroom during class time. Two trips to the school to resolve this. I wasn't too worried about the actual education because he brought home A/B report cards. The teacher raved about him at conferences. Now I find out, after deciding to homeschool my son, he is not prepared for 4th grade math. I don't blame the teacher, she did the best she could with what she had. The studen/teacher ratio is too high, too many children with behavior and learning disabilities in one class and in the school period. Physical Education is non-existant, as is any real recess time. It's not good or realistic for children to be cooped up in a classroom for 6 hours with no break. The physical building itself is a disaster as it IS the oldest school building in Tallahassee. This school district, and state in general, place far too much emphasis on testing and not real teaching. If your child is above the curve, they will not get what they need to continue their learning, as the focus is on the children that are considered "at risk". If I had it to do all over again, I would not have moved from our home state or taken my son away from a school he enjoyed and actually learned at.

Teacher effectiveness: Very effective

Even though it is only the first week of school the introduction that I had between myself and Ms. Nesmith was detailed enough so that I know she is exactly what I had hoped for in an early educator for Gary. She has the special talents that will get Gary on the level he needs to be performing at, I have complete confidence in that.

Since Gary is an incoming Kindergartener I can not answer that question personally as of yet. I do know however that Cobb, is a "Magnet" school. I believe that is the correct term, and that if I am correct; the development of persistence, grit and determination in its incoming students was probably instilled by it's feeder elementary school, Kate Sullivan.

From what I could see on the day we had school orientation and the amount of school shirts and stickers, hats and so many other items yes! Also, I have lived in this subdivision since 1996. I have watched your Fall Festival's and listened to others parents talk about the school since our grandson came to live with us and began playing organized sports in the neighborhood; the other parents have true respect for our school. We choose to send Gary here over Trinity.

I really can't answer this yet because I/we are new to Kate Sullivan! :) We Just haven't been onboard long enough to judge the school in this category.

From day one every time I turn a corner I have run into a smiling face.. The paperwork that came home with Gary was straight forward what was expected of the student and what would occur if the student didn't follow the rules. I felt that the disciplinary actions were fair and that were age appropriate for my five year old. I am a firm believer that shaming a child is no way to teach a lesson or values you wish for them to retain for a lifetime.

Ms. Nesmith and her staff have been informative and friendly since day one. Their guidance has been invaluable to myself and my husband since it has been years since I have had to navigate the school system with a little one. Gary has had some difficult challenges to overcome in his young life and I feel a sincere concern from her and her staff that is most comforting to our family.

Teachers of this school are not properly educated on how to physiologically guide small kids. They put a lot of stress on kids. In some cases they treat kids like adult. My son always complained that teachers are not fair. They give privileges to the students they like. If a student is not happy or not listening or did something wrong, teachers keep him isolated from other kids in class room, lunch or play ground. This is completely against kids psychology and mental growth. I had to take an article on this and gave it to my son's teacher and the principal. I didn't feel that things were improved after I wanted them to learn something from that article. If a student has little bit of behavior problem, that student may be violent by the end of the year following the ways school treats them. I never felt that Kate Sullivan equally cares all students. I found most school staffs are very unprofessional in terms of communication. They rarely teach students some general courtesy. I really doubt if they maintain a very kids friendlily study environment in class room and school activities. Kids are always on mental stress.

My daughter will be attending this school and I heard it was wonderful, but after reading the reviews I can only wonder if the negative are negative for the right reasons. I see someone speaking about the out of zone children which my child is as if this were 1965 or something but I am sure that the school board has realized that bringing out of zone children means bringing diversity and studies have shown that children being in diverse environments improve their learning skills on all parts and to all children. I have studied child care for years. I am excited to have my child go there, I just hope she does not encounter those parents with small minds. This will be a great learning experience for her although she is already on the top of her game being above average in all her skills since before she stepped foot in anyone's school. She will be an asset to the school. My rating on this school is strictly on the good things I have heard and not on the negative people with small minds.

Warm, caring teachers, friendly surrounding neighborhoods (so classmates are often involved in the same extracurricular activities, too), super-involved parents. Kate Sullivan Elementary has made a strong effort to keep arts education, recess, regular PE, and other enrichment programs that add real educational depth (even a vegetable garden by the K-1 building) to the school in the face of ever-increasing pressure to teach to the standardized tests, and it works. My son is in 2nd grade and has been here from the beginning, and he loves his school!

I too had a little anxiety about sending my Kindergartener to public school. I can honestly say that the teachers genuinely care about the students. I really like that my son's teacher loves reading. She has made it fun for her students, which has made learning to read enjoyable. My son is reading as though he's been doing so for years. He loves school and that makes me extremely happy.

Kate Sullivan Elementary continues to be a strong school with a superb reputation. The teachers, staff and administration care deeply about each and every student. Parent involvement has increased dramatically during the last two years. There is a strong PTA with an active PTA board. Kate Sullivan continues to draw kids from private schools. There is a strong focus on student achievement and providing quality instruction for all students.

Many excellent caring experienced teachers. Wonderfully diverse student population. Good parent involvement. Smaller than many other comparable schools. Excellent test scores. Brand new media center and cafeteria. Lovely traditional, older building and beautiful campus. Convenient midtown location.

This school is beginning to go downhill. Safety is a major concern with traffic and school policy enforcement. The teachers are wonderful but the administration makes excuses for safety concerns. PTA has about 10 parents every meeting if they are lucky.

I had my children attending a private school and due to some unfortunate events at that particular school, I ended up pulling them out and sending them to Kate Sullivan. What a blessing Kate Sullivan has been. This is an exceptional school! I have been so pleased with the teachers, staff and administration. My children have thrived and are clearly on the path of success, thanks to this wonderful school. Respect for the students, teachers and one another is clearly demonstrated at this school. The extracurricular activities are wonderful and enjoyed by the children. The curriculum is challenging and exceptional.

For the past 4 years I have had the opportunity to experience first hand the wonders of Kate Sullivan. From the richness of the diversity of our student population, to the generosity and devotion of our volunteers, from the enthusiastic, innovative educators, to the supportive, fore-thinking Administration, Kate Sullivan remains a front-runner among Tallahassee s educational institutions. Where else can you find a faculty and administration committed to the belief that all children will learn in a safe, nurturing and challenging environment, and are valued and actively involved in becoming life long learners and productive citizens in a diverse global society, and who envision an established culture of continuous excellence in teaching and learning through rigorous and relevant academics with the assistance of the arts and emerging technologies nowhere else but Kate Sullivan! Imagine how fortunate I feel to be a member of this Team! Teacher, First Grade

I am concerned about teacher morale. This is not the same school it was 5 years ago. Thank goodness for art, music, WKSN, media or I would pull my child out. Assistant Principal is trying to hold the school together.

With a son that required some special needs, we were so pleased with the attention that he received during his stay at Kate Sullivan. At every grade level, K-5th, he was given the support of his individual grade level teachers, special area teachers, occupational therapist, and all the administrative personnel. Kate Sullivan Elementary status as a 'Blue Ribbon School' has truly stood the test in the results that we have witnessed with our son. As parents we always had an open line of communication with all his teachers and they all went the extra mile to inform us what it would take for him to succeed. We could not be happier with our experiences at Kate Sullivan Elementary.

Sullivan is now more of a magnet school... half the kids are from outside of the school zone. Not sure why the school board did this, but the impact has not been good. The playground is now covered with portable classrooms and the out-of-zone kids just keep coming.

As a former student of Jennie Moore Elementary, I recommend it to enyone. Although there are some problems at the school, there will never be a school that does not have any problems. I compare myself to friends I know who went to different elementary schools in the area, and I know that there are very few that had the same quality of education. In the end, three out of the four children in my family recieved full scholarships for college and I attribute it directly to the quality of the curriculum and staff of the schools that I attended (and my parents of course!).

The school board has effectively turned Kate Sullivan into a magnet school for minorities - from 22% minority 10 years ago to 42% now, with school choice being used by every parent who works downtown (near Sullivan). There's less parent involvement, lower teacher morale, bigger classes. Portables have popped up all over the playground to accomodate the influx. I choose to send my child elsewhere.

First the good--an amazing art teacher, a high level of parental involvement, a good mix of kids, a safe environment, a handful of really amazing teachers. Now the negative--they spend far too much time teaching to the test, art and music are not an integral part of the program, new hires are not of the highest caliber, lack of leadership from the top, and no recess after grade 1.

Kate Sullivan has a very good academic programs, the teachers are very caring and involves the parents with thier childrens schooling. They constantly keep you updated on your child progress. The art classes are great, but they could do with a better music program for children who would like to play an instrument or sing in a chorus.

The School is in need of more direction and a morale boost, but the teachers are determined and focused in their individual classrooms. The leadership from the Assistant Principal is what carried the school for the past year. Hopefully the Principal has not gotten adjusted and is prepared to lead.

My daughter goes to Kate Sullivan now and is in K. She has made so much progress from the first day of school. Her teacher Mrs. B. Penn is one of the best teachers that takes time with every student and does what is needed to help that child alaong. I wish I had teachers like her when I was in school.
