Super school with a wonderful history. Band program is really really good...don't pass the band by. Thank god the school board rehabbed the building & didn't tyear it down like they initially wanted to do. Not a wealthy school like the other high schools (HBP) in Tampa but worth a good solid rating
im a 10th grader at hhs n the school is a good school but its true the principal really only care about the ib students like there is a separation between the traditional and ib students. But its really up to the student to how they view the school. For example before i started I asked people how was hhs and they all told mi different things and for mi non of it was true (that was for mi anyways) so its actually how the student takes it in.
If your child is not in IB take him/her out inmidiately before loosing time. The teachers do nothing, in their own word "nothing" because the majority of the kids don't care, talk back to teachers and they are afraid. The principal only cares about the IB the rest they are just there (in the school) so they are not in the streets that is their goal.
Everyone needs to be aware that HHS has an IB magnet program and a traditional program. They are two totally different animals and just because you live "in district" doesn't mean you automatically get into the IB program. You must apply and be accepted as a freshman. The IB program is wonderful for the self motivated student. If your student is not self motivated, do yourself a favor and do not apply. As for the traditional program, you may want to do some research and talk to other parents before committing. Definitely not the same experience, teacher attitude or caliper of teaching.
RUN THE OTHER WAY if your child is not in the IB Program! The faculty is just plain incompetent. I'm a parent of two traditional students at Hillsborough. If you inquire within the school, the staff doesn't even acknowledge you as a concerned parent. If they treat adults like this it's not hard to conceive how the kids are treated when you are not around...My kids and I talk about school and the teachers are cursed at and threatened by students with no actions taken. One wonders if they are reprimanded for reporting it????
IB Program is second to none. If you're lucky enough to gain entrance into this program, don't make a mistake and pass it by. Don't believe what you hear that the child is too busy doing homework to have a 'life'. My child is in many clubs and does a sport. Traditional students may look 'rough' but are harmless. Populations are kept seperate with different bell schedules. Administration is on top of things and the teachers are the absolute cream of the crop. Your child will be better prepared for college than in a regular high school plus will probably enter college as a sophomore or higher. IB is the best program around.
this is a really great school and i love it there it has a great atmosphere and is very cultural school
My daughter started the at the IB program a month ago and so far, it is wonderful. The teachers, students and sports have all inspired my daughter to do her best. They also seem to be encouraging her to be well rounded, not just a bookworm. My children came from charter schools where the schools expect the parents to donate a lot of support (money and time) to the school. This school doesn't ask for much from the parents (which is a relief, but I think the parents would be willing to do more if asked). The technology of the school is a little behind, but I'll take quality teachers over technology, any day of the week.
Why do you love Hillsborough High School? it enriches the minds of our future generation
All 3 of my children have attended their IB program. 2 have graduated, & 1 is in her JR year. This school has dynamic teachers, & great programs, but like many others, is currently suffering from lack of funds. There are so many supplies & improvements that could be made with this money, please help us out.
If you are lucky enough to gain acceptance into the IB Program at Hillsborough.....your childs future is assurred.....There is NO BETTER ACADEMIC PREPARATION ANYWHERE IN THE COUNTRY>>>>>You child will enter college as Sophomore or Junior....This program is a class act....but only 145 Freshmen out of 800 who apply are accepted each year....Good Luck
The school has been totally refurbished and is beautiful inside and out. My son attends the I.B. program there and has had no problems with the traditional students. Our main complaint is with the I.B. administrative staff, they are aloof and unresponsive to questions or problems concerning their own curriculum.
The school has very good academic program, including IB program which are oriented towards academic excellence.
I am extremely displeased with Hillsborough High School. I have a child in the Traditional program. I don't believe the quality of the academic programs is very high, but that may be due to the poor quality of the administration. Trying to contact the administration and/or get any results can be next to impossible. Hillsborough has many sports and extracurricular activities to choose from, but if your child does not choose to be involved in sports, there is not much left to offer. I am not sure about the level of parental involvement, but it could be because there is an signficant amount of trouble getting anyone to contact you.
This school has a very strong IB program that produces students with very strong SAT/ACT scores that gain admission to Ivy league schools.
This school has many issues to deal with. Not only are there portables now but the rest of the school is trashed. There is mold growing in the ceiling tiles, Holes in the walls, overall its just unsanitary. This is a beautiful school with a horrible grade, suroundings, and reputation. There is no one on one interaction with the students it all boils down to referrals. The administration is all new but one. The new adminisration needs to step up and make this school a better one acadimically and just in overall quality.
HHS has one of the best IB programs in Florida, if not the nation, according to test scores. Definitely recommended for advanced students. However, a new administration brought in to bring up FCAT test scores is floundering. Support of teachers is poor and there is inadequate discpline procedures and follow-up when disruptive students are referred to their assistant principals. Only one of the four assistant principals has adhered to district discipline guidelines with the expected positive results for classrooms in which the bad behaviour was stopped. Also, efforts to improve reading scores has gotten off to a disorganized and sluggish start, with poor leadership in this area from the administration. High teacher absenteeism. A poor physical communication system set up makes it difficult for parents to reach students and for teachers to reach other teachers and administrators. The media center is the school's crown jewel, with experienced, supportive professionals.
Some good teachers, beautiful old school. Unfortunately in a bad neighborhood, drawing 'tough' kids. Never felt safe.
As a former student, graduated in 1958, our school was and remains to be one of the most beautiful facilities in the Deep South. The present rehab of the building will give it new life. I am a proud alumnus and wish the current students were able to enjoy the same friendly attitudes of the students and their teachers of yesterday. It was fun and a time we will never forget.
