My son currently attends Turner Elementary in New Tampa. It is a great school but I don't feel like he is getting the specialized help in reading and speech that he needs. I would like something that maybe teaches through Art. He loves doing Artwork and I think this might help his learning.
Are you talking about a public school, or are you also asking about private schools? How old is your son/what grade? If he has an IEP, have you requested a recent team meeting, to revise his goals if he isn't making the kind of progress you feel he should? I'd like to invite you to join Greatschools Learning and Attention Difficulties Group at http://community.greatschools.net/groups/11554, where more parents of students with special ed needs can offer suggestions and support.18892
I was looking for a public school (we aren't in a financial position to send him to private school). My son is 61/2 and currently in 1st grade. He does have an IEP for speech and Reading/Writing/Math Learning Disabilities. I see his ESE and speech teachers on a daily basis and have expressed my concerns. I think the school just does not receive enough funding to provide him with more services. I feel that he needs to be with a smaller group on a daily basis. He gets very frustrated because he is starting to notice that he is behind the other students. I am worried that they will want to hold him back again and I don't think that this is the answer. He tested at a gifted level IQ but does have problems with speech, reading and writing. Their answer is to read more with him at home. This is a lot easier said, than done! He becomes frustrated and aggravated right away when we start reading and he doesn't know a word. Some days he reads excellent, others he doesn't seem to know any words.18891
My son is also highly gifted and has ADHD/dyslexia/dysgraphia (reading and writing disabilities)...he's currently a college freshman. The term for kids who are gifted and have these other issues is "2e" or "twice exceptional" and I've compiled a bunch of resources at http://community.greatschools.net/groups/16042 I'm no doctor, but I'm wondering about the reading where some days he "doesn't seem to know any words" ~ has he ever been evaluated for a possible seizure disorder? I belong to several forums, and one other mom said it seemed like her child wasn't as responsive some times compared to others, (not any outward obvious signs like twitching or stuff like that) but they eventually discovered the apparent lack attention at some times was actually when small seizure disturbances were occurring.... When it comes to IEPs, if you don't feel your son is making adequate progress towards his goals, you are an equal team member, and should request another meeting to revise the remediation methodology, etc. Lack of money isn't an acceptable excuse. Please do join the Learning and Attention forum that I mentioned earlier, or another is www.millermom.proboards107.com ~ both will give you more information and support. 18890
