School Official Point of View

Posted May 30, 2012

As the outgoing Head of The Children s School, I m proud to say that hundreds of students have been well served by the school, evidenced by the stories they ve shared with us year after year. The school has a committed, talented, dedicated faculty who work tirelessly to meet the needs of all of their students. Classrooms are stimulating, exciting learning environments that other schools and teachers work to model. The Children s School is authentically diverse in a myriad of ways. It is diverse geographically. It is diverse culturally and ethnically. It is diverse socio-economically. And it serves a diverse group of learners who graduate with confidence, poised to succeed both academically and socially. All organizations experience change. The Children s School is well prepared and solidly ready for new leadership. It is an exciting time for the school and as I leave, I celebrate all of its many successes.

I can't say enough wonderful things about TCS - curriculum, environment, teachers, administration and families. TCS has a warm, friendly atmosphere, but high expectations for the kids. Academics are appropriately challenging and teachers focus on ensuring children progress each year which means assignments are often individualized. TCS has a unique focus on building character to develop independent, strong, compassionate kids. My 6 year old/rising second grader has recently faced her first challenging situations with friends from other schools and I was amazed at her ability to address the situations head on, successfully resolve conflicts and teach others how to be inclusive. The new head of school, Nishant, is a strong but approachable leader. He is eager to continually identify opportunities for improvement while continuing to promote what works. With 24 kids and 2 teachers per classroom, there's opportunity for individual attention. Our child will be well-prepared for the rigors (academic AND social) of private middle schools.

WOW...are there K rooms overloaded. Not sure I want my child in a room with 25 kids that I actually have to pay for. Seemed like some teachers don't have teaching/ed backgrounds as well. Kids seemed happy though...and saw lots of parents hanging around.

Our experience at The Children's School has been phenomenal! We have watched our son grow into a fine young man with strong academic abilitiies, a great moral character, and a sense of responsibility to his community. We believe TCS is an important component of this growth. His teachers have been excellent, and each one has gone above and beyond typical classroom duties to show their dedication to teaching and caring for the students! He is happy to go to school every day, he looks forward to learning, and he is always eager to come home and share what he has learned with us! The hands-on academic style is great for growing children, and I have no doubt he will be prepared for a rigorous Middle School curriculum when he leaves TCS! He has a diverse group of classmates and has become knowledgeable about a variety of cultures and religions; he is respectful and accepting of differences. When you walk through this school, you see SMILES, students that are fully engaged, teachers that are excited about the material, and a friendly and strong leadrership team. We are genuinely happy to be there, and I can wholeheartedly highly recommend TCS!

My daughter attended The Childrens School from second grade through graduation in 8th Grade. She had previously had very bad experience with school and was performing with less than a stellar record. She did not like school and was struggling with her school work. We enrolled her at The Childrens School, mid year in second grade. She blossomed before our eyes and continued on through Middle School. The Childrens School taught her responsibility, an incredible love for learning, respect for her peers and teachers alike. She learnt to communicate with all, to become curious and adventurous and our biggest hurdle was getting through "school break" as she couldnt wait to return to her class. She is now on the deans list at The Bishops School and I cannot find enough ways to thank The Childrens School for their constant caring, concern, and love of all our children. This is an amazing school and I highly recommend it to all. With Much Gratitude and Many Thanks, Michelle Aarons

Community = families whose children fit the TCS model minus families and staff that have been removed for questioning TCS s methodologies or do not fit their narrow behavioral expectations (If you are on the second half of the equation above, your experience will be brutal). Diversity =term used to describe the racial makeup of TCS. This term does not imply that there is an acceptance of a wide spectrum of behavior or abilities. Student-c entered learning = a teacher-centered approach to teaching children. Student Confidence =hopefully something that appears after kindergarten when students with crushed self-esteem have been weeded out (typically about 30% of the starting pre-primary class in the first 2 yrs). Excellent Staff = a middle tier group in terms of teaching ability. Independence =student is able to follow teacher directives consistently. If TCS is so great why is the Head of School (of 25 yrs) leaving for Woodward ?

I have been apart of The Children's School for twelve years. My daughter graduated from TCS and our son is graduating this year. I can't imagine any other school in Atlanta that is as family oriented, and child focused as TCS. Throughout the years the administration has always been accessible and for a parent that's priceless. The children's school offers a stellar academic environment, and your child/children will leave with a confidence that will catapult them to the next level. It has been an amazing experience; not only for my children, but also for my entire family.

I am a current parent at TCS that is very pleased with the results I have seen in my children. TCS has an environment that allows my children to thrive independently. I love the sense of community and inclusiveness that I feel when I am on campus. One of many things that attracted my family to TCS was the diversity and how the kids are taught to respect and accept the differences in all people. It is amazing to look at the work my kids were doing at the beginning of the year and compare it to the end of the year. The improvement and growth is what shows me that we picked the right school in TCS. I also love that TCS has many ways for parents to be involved on and around campus. Parents are always welcome to come by and donate their time and knowledge in all sorts of ways. We currently have two kids enrolled and are looking forward to our third to start in the next couple of years.

I am a current parent of a TCS student anxiously awaiting May 31st our last day of horror. TCS is laughable at best. Academics are terribly lacking substance and rigor. If your primary concern for your child is to be a part of the get-along gang then s/he will do exceptionally well doing nothing. If discipline, focus and academic excellence are of importance to you, I suggest you look elsewhere.

I was extremely disappointed with this school, so say the least. I can only speak for their After-School program (Discovery). But after reading the last review by another parent, I think the root cause is the same. This school rewards compliance more than anything else. Teachers, as well as other administrative staff are not independently motivated toward child's welfare or growth, rather, only focused towards "following a certain pattern" established in the past. My child DREADED going here. It seemed some of the teachers punish a child emotionally by making them feel bad about themselves, for mistakes that any child can make. My child felt increasingly bad about himself, to the extent that even the mention of this school brought tears to his eyes. Allow me to emphasize that since leaving this school about an year ago - my child has shown tremendous improvement in all areas - He is in the GA Challenge program, a budding artist, and most importantly, he loves the new after-school program he goes to. In fact, he would stay there longer if allowed to.

The Children s School is a wonderful place for children to grow and learn as part of a caring and diverse community. It is evident that kids are meaningfully engaged, appropriately challenged, and enjoying learning and playing together. Learning at TCS encompasses every aspect of their development including academic, social, and emotional. Students are encouraged to reach their individual potential, supported by amazing teachers, and taught in a fun and meaningful way. My children are challenged each day to do quality academic work, develop organizational skills, and engage with others in ways that are caring and respectful. They have incredible opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities such as music, sports, and foreign language as well as meaningful community service projects and amazing outdoor education experiences. I entrust my children to an incredible school that respects children, diversity, and community.

TCS is a very unique and wonderful school. My daughter has thrived at TCS both socially and academically. TCS has instilled a love of learning in my daughter and has helped her understand the importance of character. The academic environment is rigorous and robust, yet flexible enough to accommodate various styles of learning. We are very happy with the school, TCS' curriculum and its community of students, teachers and parents. In summary, I believe TCS prepares its children for the way the world is going, not the way the world has been.

The Children's School is a dream. Every day we have been at this school has been better than the day before. Our experience as a family in this community and our daughter's experience as a student keeps getting fuller day by day. We have been in this community for two years and there is not one thing I would change. We chose this school because of the diversity of the student body and the faculty, we love it because of the way my daughter is being taught, how well she is responding and growing academically at an incredibly rapid pace. Within a month of first grade, she was able to read "chapter" books whereas she started the first grade only reading Bob Books. Her problem solving ability and her reasoning astounds us for her age. We could not be more thrilled with the education our daughter is receiving and in which she is a participating member. The respect for the earth, her peers, her teachers, and experiences that she is learning and exhibiting fills me with peace that she is on the right track to becoming a leader and a happy world citizen. We credit TCS with this overwhelming feeling of hope and assuredness we have in our daughter's school experience.

My son recently graduated from The Children's School. His experience at TCS was wonderful. His teachers and the greater school community helped him grow emotionally, socially AND intellectually. My son benefited from the academic rigor that TCS provided. He was challenged and was very well prepared for middle school. He not only received a strong academic education, he learned to think, reason, analyze and process. TCS strong emphasis on character development has also helped him face the social challenges of middle school. We are very happy he received this opportunity and we would highly recommend The Children s School.

This is a very nurturing school, but if your academic standards are high I suggest you look elsewhere. I thought I did my homework before enrolling my child. I read all the reviews and talked to a number of people, and in the end decided that the bad reviews were from a few disgruntled parents and should be disregarded. Therefore, in this review I hope to tell parents what I wish someone had told me. Before you enroll your children, visit the classrooms, more than once if possible while instruction is being provided, so that you can get a true picture of TCS academics. It s not for everyone, and I don t think it is for anyone looking for academic rigor. If I had done this I would never have given TCS a second look. Taking the tour is not enough, you have to see them in action. Don t dismiss the negative reviews, because I did and I will regret it from now on.

All of my children have attended The Children's School and we have never questioned our decision in choosing this fine institution. Our children have different personalites and learning styles and all of them have thrived and received an exceptional education. Additionally, they have learned to be good, compassionate, thoughtful individuals. The Children's School is a special place filled with special, talented people.

As a long time-- 20+ year bordering neighbor of The Children's School I feel obligated to communicate to the parents of the school as to the poor relationship this school has with Midtown and to it's closest neighbors. The reality is that the school rarely communicates with Midtown Atlanta and is perceived as a strange enclave of outsiders that drop their children off and pick them up from areas outside Midtown. The result is noise, traffic and a lot of angry people. This school is not an asset to Midtown or to Atlanta. Attempts have been made to relocate the school to more appropriate surroundings. We in Midtown hope that this will happen soon.

We are very pleased with our Sons educational experience at TCS. When he arrived at the School he only spoke his Native language Spanish. TCS was the only prestigious private school who would accept him. Withing 5 to 6 months he was speaking conversational English. Several of his teachers were bi-lingual and helped him navigate through. Our Son is now thriving and comes home every day with new information and loves TCS.

I am an alumna who is going to high school and is looking back at all of the memories I have of TCS. The seven years I spent there I grew so much academically, socially, and independently. I really enjoyed moving in and out of the builidings for classes and our version of Olympic Day. The teachers are inspirational to students with their one-on-one meetings with children who need it. I encourage any parent to allow your child a chance to go to the school and watch them change before your eyes. -I love you, TCS Class of 2008

The school is a wonderful option for those parents that chose to send their child(ren) to private school. What I don't like is the parents that give unfair ratings due to their own personal problems, more than likely...financial....you don't see or hear the dissatisfaction of a 'customer' until there is a problem paying the BILL. Parents should not get on a campaign of bashing a great school, when there's is a personal problem, just withdraw....quietly. This is a great school, when compared to many others here in Georgia.

About these ratings

The Community Rating is the school’s average rating from its community members (e.g., parents, students, and school staff). The highest possible rating is five stars; the lowest is one star.

We currently do not have any test score information for this school. Unlike public schools, private schools are not always required to report data about their schools or not required to take the same tests as public schools. Many private schools take different standardized tests; however, that information is often made available only to families of enrolled students. We strive to acquire additional private school data whenever available.
