I would just like to say that this school was built with the community in mind, i love that about the school. My daughter attended 6-8 grades and i really didn't like the Jr. High part of the school because my daughter had three different teachers in one year, and the kids are not respectful at all their very rude and most of the time the teachers could not con troll the students, i would say when it comes down to those Jr. high school kids, BE AWARE.... I also found that the teachers were young teaching the Jr. High kids and most of the time they were know different than the kids, i found them flirting, and playing around with each other just the the kids, The other half of the school is totally different, the pre-k to 5 grades i found to be hard working teachers. Excellent education and programs.
Once Charles R. Drew decides to remove all the administrators in the building and replace them with patient, positive and professional leaders, then the school will rise to the outstanding caliber that it once was (2002-2004). Great afterschool program! You can't beat the price for the activities offered in this program.
Charles R. Drew Charter School is a great school to attend. I have been attending this school since I was in the 2nd grade. The school's curriculum is excellent, and so are all the extracurricular activities that are mentioned. If your child was smart, then they would be in programs such as the BETA Club, and SGA. If your child was SMART then they would be placed in advance placement courses based off their CRCT scores. The counselor there is great, and the administration does a fab job. The students there are well disciplined, but then again, tell me a place where you wouldnt find bad students. People, be real. Get real. Drew is a great place to send your child if they are academically motivated and want to learn.
My daughter went to kindergarden here until the end of November. The only thing I liked about the school was the after school program activities through the YMCA. The teacher and her assistant were millitant/mean. The after school program would not verify id during pick up. Each time I went to the childrens rest rooms they were unkept and the soap dispensors never worked. The principal was impersonal and unresponsive to suggestions to improve the school. When my daughter started this school I began looking for a better school right away because I knew I did not want her to spend her elementary years here.
We recently moved here from another state well the school system was great , luckily I found Drew Charter for my kids. The school is great but I have notice the turnover rate with some of the teachers is high because my daughter had three different teachers within one semester and the dismissal policy is terrible maybe if they get rid of the principle it would solve some of the problems. Just knowing anyone can come up to the school and just give a childs name and receive that child is harm warning to me. A caring parent
I think Drew is a great institution. My children have attended an Edison throughout their elementary and junior high school careers. As a parent, it is my responsibility to work with the teachers and be a major part in my childrens education. I have never had an issue with contacting a teacher or just showing up to check on my childrens progress. Majority of the teachers at Drew are very loving and supportive of the children. They are not there for a check, but because of their passion and commitment in educating these children. This is from their homebase teacher to their drama, spanish or dance teacher. My only issue with Drew is the principal. I have built a great relationship with the teachers, but it is a very short relationship (one school year). Due to the principals methods, they leave.
The last school year was a complete and utter diaster. My child was making great grades, and I was told by teachers that she was doing well in every subject. The packets that were given out during the school year had no impact on her learning, nor did it help on the CRCT. I think that it was all a waste. I feel some teachers have no interest in motivating our children to learn. Some of us parents do everything we can to motivate our kids, but if the teachers are negative, it rubs off on the kids, and they feel they don't have to try, because some of these teachers don't care. The administration needs to be reviewed, and teachers need to be screened well, to find out why they are teaching.
My daughter began Drew in 2004. That had been the best year every. She loved going to school enjoying the wonderful teachers and students. Now my daughter has advance to a higher level at Drew and I'm so disappointed in the way this has been ran. The communication skills has been shot! Everyone wants to be cool! No professional skill at all. What happen! My daughter ask me everyday will she have to go back. I just don't understand what is going on. Please come back to a friendly atmosphere. I really think the kids would love that. Every time I see other parent I never a positive conversation about Drew. It always something going on.
Where Drew is untouchable in academics, the lack of enthusiasm in the children is something to be examined. Parental involvement is at its all-time low and it has alot to do with the atmosphere of the administration. There are several staff members looking for an out due to the lack of structure and discipline from students and nonenforcement of rules. With proper guidance and the key parental piece Drew could be off the charts.
This is the best school in the Atlanta Public Schools district. I enjoyed the experience at this school. The teach golf, tennis, swimming lessons, and so much more.
This school's principal has taken great strides to ensure that his teaching staff is comprised of 'highly qualified' teachers. The list of extra-curricular activities provided by the school is superb: golf, swimming, tennis, poetry club, dance, tutoring, Beta Club, Student Government, and the list goes on!
My daughter was enrolled at Drew Charter in december of 2005 and her academic progress has increased temendously. My daughter has developed a greater passion for Science with her new teacher. The students at drew are taught on a whole different level from other public schools. I am glade we finally made the transistion. It's worth the experiance. I highly recommend this school to other parents.
Charles R. Drew is truely the best public school in Georgia as proven by the test scores. As my child grows with Drew (the school is 6 yrs. old), I see the amazing results. Having the extended day and year and before and after school programs, I feel my child is receiving a world class experience. The building is beautiful and the students use a 7 million dollar YMCA for PE and take golf on a PGA course. I encourage you to visit Drew and be fully involved in this community based school. I look forward to my child receiving a full scholarship to an elite high school, that I would never be able to do on my own! I can't say enough.
I have been a parent of Charles Drew Charter School for 2 years and I have seen spectacular results in my child. He has excelled in every area especially in reading and arithmatic. They have wonderful programs that many of the parents shoudl take advantage of. The staff is great and they are very interactive with the training and discipline of the children. I would highly recommend this school!
The good: extended school day, uniforms, clean building, nice facilities, state-of-the-art learning resources. The bad: All in all, I've found Drew Charter School to be a dismal disappointment. I've heard great things about the Elementary 'Academy,' but the Junior Academy (7th and 8th grades) leaves much to be desired. While my daughter does have a few teachers who truly care and are committed to education, there are just as many who are highly unorganized, uncaring, unprofessional and seem to have no true passion for teaching. There have been 2, 3, or 4 days in a row where she's had no homework, took no class notes, no quizzes, etc. When asked what she's done in school, her response is interpreted as 'busy work.' These same teachers when they do teach, will start another lesson without ever completing the previous lesson. When they don't feel like teaching, or have papers to grade, they'll just have the students read on their own for the entire period! Based on what my child has experienced there, I would never recommend this school to the parents of a middle school student.
This is the best school overall in the Atlanta Area. I am sorry my daughter is graduating this year from Middle School into High School. If you are looking for a school to bring out the best in your child. Consider Charles R Drew.
