This school costs 110 dollars a day to go to. We struggle to pay the costs, to provide our child with a way to cope with his learning problems. Three years into the program, his Iowa basics are lower on a grade level than when he started. This is very disappointing.
Our daughter attended Sophia for two years (4th-5th). The teachers were very caring and helped her learn how to interact much better socially. In math, she progressed at grade level. In language, she did not progress much, if at all. Almost no gain in her reading ability or test scores, though she made all 'A's in language and reading. No one at Sophia indicated she needed additional help or that she was not improving. When we had her tested independently, her teachers included serious comments about emotional and language issues, which they never mentioned to us (though we were available for communication and attended every conference). Teachers regularly did not respond to e-mails, or did not provide sufficient information when they did reply.
This is our first year at Sophia. Our son has processing delays that were not appropriately addressed in public school. We made the decision and took a leap of faith to take him out of public school and put him in Sophia Academy. What a difference! after only 2 months his confidence is coming back, he doesn't feel 'different from everyone else' anymore, his academics are improving every day and his teachers truly have is best interests at heart. Everyday we ask him how his day was and he says 'awesome' or 'great' or 'wonderful'. As a parent there is nothing more heart warming than to see your child flourish and grow both spiritually and academically. We are very happy that we made the change, God brought us to Sophia and it is evident to us that every day He is at work within those walls.
We are so pleased with our son's progress in his second year here, and multisensory ways they have motivated him to want to read. A smaller size school allows the entire staff to know all of our family, a bonus.
Sophia Academy is a wonderful place to work and I am thankful for the opportunity to work with such well-trained and loving faculty and staff. The parents and students are superb as well. I cannot imagine a better environment to teach in.
We have pulled our child out of this school. At the old location we experienced a loving and supportive enviroment, which did wonders for our child and made us a believer in the school's mission. However since moving to its new location, we have had a different experience. Our parental concerns were not being addressed, we lost all trust in the adminstration, and our child after several years of all 'A's' tested more behind academically then when he started at the school.
I am moving my daughter. to another school. Even though the school says it is for children with learning differences, really it is not. My daughter is a slow learner and has a cognitive delay and this school is not able to meet her needs.
I am currently pulling my child out of this school. When I started, I enjoyed getting to know the teachers and my son was pushed to do his best in a supportive way. After many other places that hacked away at his confidence I relished his improvement. Things began to change when the school moved. Beloved teachers began leaving. Money became more and more the focus. The schools mission was forgotten and the atmosphere so cherished when my son started, slowly eroded away. The school celebrates a 10 year this year but I fear that until the mission is revived from the top down, the school will die. It is certainly needed in Georgia but the school is missing the mark. I miss the many teachers who have impacted my son and I can only imagine why they leave.
Sophia Academy is tirelessly devoted to the education and success of the children they serve. I have worked often with Marie Corrigan and my child's teacher and all of those interactions have centered around the welfare of my child. A strong Christian focus coupled with strong academics delivered in multisensory instruction truly benefits any child that goes to Sophia. The vision of educating the whole child with individualized instruction in a safe and nurturing environment is paramount to the mission of the school.
I am currently a faculty member at this fine school. I am proud of the work that we do and the positive changes I have seen from our students. Mrs. Corrigan started this school from a place of love and that love is evident in all that we do here at Sophia Academy.
As a former (husband relocated) teacher i found Sophia to be a wonderful place to work - the other teachers and staff are fantastic, the founding director is smart, easy to work with, and has an unusually high degree of integrity. The students love the school. I personally know of 3 former teachers who have applied to return to the school-the ultimate compliment. I wish the school all the best. Prospective parents and their child will be delighted with the Sophia!
Sophia Academy has allowed my child the opportunity to realize her worth as a student. A time to work on her weaknesses, maximize her strengths, discover new talents and give back to others. Whether the need is one, two or more years, a child can envision his/her tomorrow because of supportive yesterdays.
My granddaughter was early into her third grade and she could not read from 'Dick and Jane.' We had her tested by the Marcus Institute and she had five learning disabilities, including dyslexia. We enrolled her in Sophia Academy and she began to thrive. The outstanding teachers and smail classes gave her confidence and her love for school (which she never had) grew tenfold. What is the value of confidence instilled in your child? How much is your love for school worth? The Founding Director is one of most dedicated educators I have met and I have had children or grandchildren in school since 1973. Most parents who have children with learning differences want to know, 'Will my child ever be ready to enter public school? My granddaughter spent three years at Sophia and went to public school in the 6th grade. She made the honor roll on every report card.
Sophia is a great school with loving caring teachers! I love working there1
Sophia Academy has been a wonderful school for my child. My child is now doing wonderful in school and his self confidence is soaring. Sophia Academy has truly been a blessing.
Fundamentally the school has a long way to go. In business you first develop core compentencies before you expand to any other product line. The school is focusing more on expansion plans, than providing a nurturing and safe environment for the children. The teachers are great but need more support from Administration.
