We have been at Burgess-Peterson for 3 years and are very happy with the school, teachers and administration. Our daughter has had wonderful teachers in each grade who have pushed her to meet her full potential. She is reading above grade level and actually enjoys doing her math homework (most days!). Principal White has high, but attainable, goals for the school and expects great things from his students and teachers. I feel he is honest and will tell you like it is, but also quite genuine and you can trust that he will do exactly what he says he will. Great things are happening at BPA and I'm excited to see what the future holds.
BPA has a lot of work it needs to do. They are not in support of children with ADD. They want only the best of students to get the test scores up. Not all the teachers are there to really help your child, they are there for a pay check. They are not willing to help a child with ADD and respect the parents wishes on how to go about making there child an achiever. My son is in 3rd grade and we just found out he has ADD. His teacher told me that ADD has nothing to do with his behavior and that he has a behavior problem. First of all ADD and behavior go hand in hand. She than went on to tell me she is not willing to work with my child. How does a teacher say that especially when he hasn't been acting out because of behavior problems but because he has ADD. How can a teacher just give up? She shouldn't be a teacher at all. This year has just started and they are discouraging my child from going to school.
When my child first attended BPA, I thought there was more of a caring and well being of students displayed by Ms. Robbins. The school test scores improved and over exceeded expectations. The new principal Mr. White is more like a politician to me and not genuine from my interactions with him. The Assistant Principal is very unpleasant and always has a scowl look on her face. I can count on one hand how many times she has said good morning during student dropoff in the morning and when I have spoken she has acted as if I didn't say anything. I don't think she has the right personality to be in this position but I am sure she meets just the job qualifications and requirements . Lastly, there are good faculty members at BPA that are in a class by themselves. Ms. Searcy, Ms.Donald, Ms. McGill, Ms. Huey, the adminstrative faculty member in the office fulltime, Mr. Jarret, the gym teacher and Ms. Loiuse. I hope BPA will discontinue with the practice of placing people in these positions due to educational cronyism.
BPA is an outstanding school! It is now under the direction of Principal David White who is simply AMAZING. There are not enough positive words in the dictionary to describe how professional, caring, educated and thoughtful he is. He goes above and beyond for his students, parents and staff. BPA is THE school. Very family friendly neighborhood school. Team BPA all the way!
What a difference a year makes. I have changed my rating made one year ago for BPA. The school has listened and improved since then. The library is now full of books and the test scores are now very competitive with the top schools in the Atlanta Public School System. I don't yet give it 5 stars, because the admin and some teachers still have some trouble with being responsive. But overall this school is much improved and I am optimistic about the outlook for Burgess-Peterson Academy.
Burgess Peterson Academy is an amazing neighborhood school. Anyone who lives in the East Atlanta community looking at school options should tour the school and speak to other BPA parents before "counting out" this school. BPA provides a nurturing environment while creating a culture of academic success. The after school activity choices and school/PTA-sponsored events are among the best in the area. The students love to go to school here and the leadership team is committed to excellence.
This is an excellent school where the leadership is impeccable! The principal is very engaged and genuinely love all the children. This is demonstrative of improved test scores and various programs. I've notice excellent involvement of parents, teachers and volunteers. The environment is one of openness and transparency. Kudos to all that make this a great school.
