Toomer is an awesome school. It has a very distinct "community" feel and the principal has worked so hard to bring in an outstanding new staff over the course of the last few years. The parents and families here are also very active and involved, not to mention extremely diverse. I think one thing that plagues this school is overcoming the competition with the Charter in the neighborhood, so many families leave after the first few years because they are not satisfied with the option for the next step --"middle school." This ends up driving test scores down in the higher grades. However, my students are gifted and we did find that they were more than appropriately challenged and extremely loved and nurtured at Toomer. It's a little school, with a big heart for the community. :)

The "parent" who posted on June 17 sure seems to know an awful lot about what happened. Such impressive insight for a "parent" to know all those details without the "parent" actually being either the teacher or principal involved.

We are very impressed with the teachers' and staff dedication at Toomer. Our son loves going to school everyday and comes home with new information to share with us. Toomer should have a much higher ranking than what GreatSchools.com has given it.

Just check the low test scores at Toomer - that should objectively tell you everything you need to know

Science Night at this school is amazing. My company donates supplies each year. Each year it has a theme, the Animal year was incredible with live animals like birds, and turtles. There were things to explore like Owl pellets, kids could touch real animal bones and skulls, draw pictures and create masks. Near the end of the evening children crying that they did not want to go home. I was proud that my company supported the event. We will definitely do it again next year.

My daughter was in 1st grade this past year and the incident mentioned about a teacher bringing her children to school is greatly exaggerated. The situation was the teacher's baby sitter had a personal situation that needed immediate attention. The decision was made to drop her children at the school until the teacher's husband could pick them up. It occurred during the lunch period and was about an hour. The leadership's option was to have the teacher leave and be unable to have instruction at all the rest of the day. It was simply impossible to get a substitute would on such short notice. I think this was the right decision. We all have children and it shows that the family-friendly nature in our school extends to our teachers and staff. We are a family that can juggle and adapt together, I think this is an important lesson for all to learn. As for the location of the homes, it was a class exercise in mapping, creating maps, and using technology like the internet and how that has changed how we find our way from place to place.

My first grader came home one day and told me his teacher spent class time trying to find out which specific house the students lived in and asking other personal info about the students' families (is that part of the core curriculum, or is that time that should have been spent more productively on class work?). This same teacher brought her kids to class when she did not have a babysitter. Instead of bringing in a substitute, the school Principal agreed to let the teacher bring her kids to the classroom. And while the teacher babysits her infant and toddler kids in the classroom, she turns on a video for the first graders to watch. So instead of my first grader coming home telling me about a new word he learned or a new science experiment he performed, he s coming home telling me how cute his teacher s baby is. Meanwhile some of the kids in the class completed the school year without being able to read. Do you see anything wrong with this picture?

Toomer is a fantastic school. The rating here does not reflect our experience at all. My daughter has attended for two years now (pre-k and kindergarten). She is thriving academically, socially, and emotionally. She is reading above her grade level and is excited about learning. The teachers and administrators all know her by name and she has made a lot of great friends. She also takes Mandarin, which is not offered at any of the other traditional public schools in Atlanta. We love Toomer!

My son is a rising 1st grader and loves his school. We ride our bike to school as much as we can and love that his education is an extension of his neighborhood community. The teachers are amazing and Dr. Jones is a tremendous leader. We love Toomer!

Our son could not have had a better year at Toomer last year. The Principal Jones is a smart, caring, strong leader. His teachers were experienced and well informed. He started Kindergarten with a basic grasp of his ABCs and left reading above grade level. He's learning Mandarin Chinese from people who are actually from China. He brought home terrific art projects. We love Toomer.

4 out of 10? NO WAY! This school deserves much higher. The activities listed are out of date. Has a greatschools.org employee been to the school to evaluate recently? Just wondering?

I have two children at Toomer. It is a great school that is growing by leaps and bounds. It is a gem in the Kirkwood area. The staff is responsive. The Principal is forward thinking.

My son went to the Pre-K program last year. He enjoyed it and did well. Overall, I think the teachers were warm and caring. My son learned to read here. His class was diverse. There was a moderate amount of parent involvement. I think what is most impressive is the dedication of the parents and the community in supporting this school. All things considered, I think this was a good option for us because we weren't able to continue to send our son to a private preschool. One thing I did feel is that the school as a whole lacked the warmth but we were satisfied with our experience.

I love the small classroom size and family feel. My child started mid year and initially had difficulty adjusting to the reading program. Her teacher and the reading coordinator worked closely with me, and I always knew what was happening and how she was doing. There is a focus on reading with two sessions per day and a monthly storytelling (alternating between professional storytellers for the school and volunteers for individual classrooms). Toomer has a partnership with Fort MacPherson. The kids take lots of field trips my child went to Fort Mac, Imagine It, the circus, Center for Puppetry Arts last year. My child s teacher had a science club with lots of hands on activities and the kids participated in the One Fair (for science, social studies, and math projects). We get to bike to school, no carpool lanes. The school has a nice playground, gymnasium, auditorium/cafeteria, and green space.

This school is great. Where each child is known by the entire staff and where the teachers are able to challenge each student. Having access to the gifted program and a Chinese language program is an added bonus.

My daughter attends this school and I am very happy with how much she has learned overall this past year. Not just academically but in culture and social skills. I look forward to her second year here.

My son will begin his third year at Toomer this fall. We have had a fantastic experience. He is an enthusiastic reader, loves math, and comes home talking about all the science experience. I feel the music and art department aren't as strong as it could be. My son takes a Chinese class everyday. He really enjoys going to school and gets along well with all of his friends.

My son started Toomer this year. I have been very impressed with the leadership of the principal and the teachers. I would really love to see more involvement from the parents. The school is definitely on it's way up.
