Profile Completeness

INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

Our sons went there and, despite the poor conditions of the school system in DeKalb County at the time, our youngest was particularly concerned, he got his masters in education and wen to teach his first full year at mlk in Lithonia. The roughest school in DeKalb County; and je loves it.

Great staff! Teachers are excited about teaching. Sequoyah teachers are always willing to stay late and arrive early to develop and implement effective lessons on behalf of their students.

This is the Middle School in our community. I think the principal and teachers are working hard to improve the school and give the students in our area a chance at a good education. They truly seem to care about the well-being of the students, but it is definitely an under-resourced school. They need more resources in order to continue bringing up the level of education.

I am a very proud teacher of Sequoyah. We are working hard to push our students to excell and be successful. We have been making AYP for three years in a row and we are a receiving school now. Even though, most of our students' native language is not English, they learn English fast and most of the teachers are ESOL endorsed (this means they are appropriately trained to teach these students from different nationalities) And for Teacher Parent Conferences, we always have interpreters of different languages to help parents understand and answer any concerns they may have. Kudos for Sequoyah!!!

Sequoyah Middle School has become one of the shining schools in the district, if not the state. The school is on a successful track, and it lives up to its motto of being a neighborhood school!

I am a proud parent of Sequoyah. My eldest attended Sequoyah for three years and loved it. She maintained honor roll each year and was part of a historical moment with helping Sequoyah make AYP. My youngest is now in the 8th and looks forward to the same. Our new academic program is set to help our students accomplish this very goal. Our staff has been hand picked by the DCSS BOE to hopefully assure our progress and increase our chances of becoming a receiving school. We have one of the best Orchestra Directors in the State. Though sport competitions can help build the students in other areas, AYP is the focus. Parental involvement could be better.

Overall I think Seqoyah is a unattended school. There is a LOT of time wasted , english is not taught well enough that my children can understand and most of all when I ask my children what they learned they say 'nothin much.'The school is not diverse at all. The principal needs to teach the children a lot of discipline to get them on track!

I don't know who wrote the review saying that the kids are unruly, but I have not seen that to be the case! The students act like normal middle schoolers! The teachers are wonderful, as they continously push the kids, even through language barriers. Leadership at the school could be stronger, but I also think that the principal's hands are tied. Overall - a good middle school experience.

2005-2006 The Good: The diversity at Sequoyah is great at helping students learn to live in an increasingly diverse world. A new parenting center has resources for parents to help with educating all ages of children. They put on a great International Day at the end of the year. Kids get lots of free help, like free tutoring. There are a few really good teachers. The Bad: The students are noisy, undisciplined and generally inattentive. The PTO is weak, with a core that tries but very little support outside of the core. Language and culture are serious barriers to parental involvement. Teaching is inconsistent. There is a lot of time wasted.

Its a very diverse school, so much of the parents aren't involved because of the low english language skills. Teachers are very understanding and try the best because most of these kids english is there second language. Sequoyah is a traditional school so uniform is required.
