In the Atlanta Public Schools District (APS), students can attend their neighborhood schools or charter schools. In some cases, transfers to other district schools (called intradistrict transfer) may be permitted, as long as there is space. Middle schoolers can attend single-gender academies. High schoolers can attend schools that specialize in such subjects as the arts, business and technology; they may also attend an “early college” that allows them to earn an associate’s degree or college credit toward a bachelor’s degree. The district provides special education services.Under the federal No Child Left Behind law, students attending a Title I school designated as “in need of improvement” have the right to attend a higher-performing school in the district.
