We are moving from California to Georgia. Our daughter will be going into the 8th grade when school starts in Aug. I'm trying to find a school or information on the culture at schools in Lawrenceville. Particularly with the teachers. I'm checked out the charts that greatschools make available to us, which were a great help. I'd love to be able to communicate with another parent or teacher in that is familiar with the Gwinnett County school district. California is such a diverse state, and the district that my daughter is coming from is very racially diverse within the student population as well as within the teacher and administration population. I'd love to find something similar. Can any help?
Hi Erknox, since this is an old posting I'm kind of wondering if you have any advise for me. My family may be relocating to Lawrenceville area, my daughter 3rd. grader, how'd you find the school your daughter attends?12359
Hi Deenice! Where are you moving from? While we stayed in Lawrenceville for a few months while we looked for a home, we ended up moving to Conyers. It's about 40 min. away from Lawrenceville. Are you moving to Lawrenceville or ???? Coming from California I feel like I'm in a different world here. But I like it. Tell me where you're coming from and where you're wanting to move and I'll give you all the info I can. Look forward to hearing back from you. Lisa12358
Soooo Sorry it took so long to get back, I had a suprise business trip (yukk). Anyhow, I'm moving from Central NJ. Lebanon Township. The school my daughters attending is perfect!!!! The classes small, the attention she gets from teachers is excellent, the curriculum, everything is wonderful. I hate to leave, but business calls! I have family in Lawrenceville, Stone Mountain and Alpharetta, none of who have school age children. I'm not sure what town, but the public school system will play a major part in my decision. Lisa your take on the Southern School Experience would be greatly appreciated.12357
Happy belated holidays! I hosted my family, which consisted of over 30 people. I haven't done that in years. When we lived in California, we had no family. This was truly an experience, but a great one. Hope you had a wonderful holiday also. In regards to the school system in general here.....I come from a family of educators and my aunt who lives in Lawrenceville is a retired teacher. She gave me great insight. Overall, Georgia isn't rated very high nationally when it comes to education. But of the cities you listed in your post, I'd probably stay away from Stone Mountain. I'm sure there has to be some great schools there, I just haven't heard about them. I have however heard of great schools and supportive districts in Gwinnett, which is the county Lawrenceville is in. And also I've heard great things about schools in Alpharetta. Schools here seemed to be smaller in class size than we had in California, so for me that part wasn't a concern. I love the idea of having a teacher that really wants to teach and having district that supports the teachers. One thing I will caution, is the racial breakdown here. I'm not sure what you're used to, but there are schools that don't have a very diverse racial breakdown and that was very very important to me. Because it is the south, there are some folks that still think as if they are living years ago. Blacks being rude to whites and whites being rude to blacks. And nothing in between. Coming from California I wasn't used to that. But most areas that I have gone have been wonderful. I've just heard some really horrible stories. But I guess it boils down to good and bad everywhere. Anyway, hope this helps some. Let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck!12356
Hello Erknow! I'm certain you will love living in Georgia. - especially in Gwinnett County! I have quite a bit of experience and knowledge of the schools in Gwinnett County and would be more than happy to give you some suggestions. My family has lived in this area for 11 years. Over the past couple years I have had the great fortune of working with ALL of the PTAs in Gwinnett County.
If you would like to ask some specifics please send me an email and I'd be happy to give you details.
That's so nice of you. We ended up though moving to Rockdale County. I love the schools, but I can tell I'm not in California anymore. Not to mention, I'm having the hardest time finding a job.12354
