There are incidents of social bullying at DFA. The atmosphere is very pro encouragement and support on the part of students, so most incidents are nipped in the bud. Dr. Kelly's presence all over the school helps and teachers model kindness to one another and to students so my observations have seen a decrease in mean girl behavior over the past seven years
This is NOT a school for everyone. Teachers offer lots of extra help to students struggling with classes, but for the most part, this school is filled with high acheiveing students. The 2016 graduating class Of 92 students had 60 NHS members and only 11 graduated with a GPA under a 3.0.
Dr Kelly is an inspiring leader. She is present at every performance. She is all over the school, you can hear her high heels clacking in every hallway. She is firm, kind and fair with students and tolerates zero misbehavior. She appears to be respectful with the staff and is available to parents. She always appears to have pleasant, cheerful disposition. Spends probably an average of 65 hours a week at the school. You see her in car line, directing traffic at 7:30am and at the evening performance locking up at 10pm.
Davidson has a family atmosphere. The kids respect one another and are very accepting of individual personalities. Davidson is filled with artistic temperament at every level, and people embrace and encourage one another to be their best. For the most part, students are honest and hold cheaters in contempt. Because this is a magnet school, students who break rules are returned to their zone schools.
Teachers are invested in DFA and are, for the most part, inspiring in the classroom. They have high expectations for students, work hard themselves, arrive early, stay late and attend most events and performances.
Students are trained to manage their time and organize their work in middle school. By high school, most students are busy with homework and studying during rehearsals or lunch to minimize the hours at home.
Davidson Fine Arts is a wonderful school. It is open to students living in Richmond county by audition. Students must have 80% average in all classes to be eligible to apply.
My daughter attended DFA 6th-12th and loved it!
This school is academically challenging. AP courses are required in high school and lots of seniors are duel enrolled. Most students choose to pursue fine arts and specialize in some type of music, dance, theater, writing or art. The principal is very involved in all aspects of the school and the teachers are very supportive and involved as well. In spite of being supportive, academic teachers do not alter test schedules during performance weeks. Students must be capible of using their time wisely and managing stress. DFA has a competitive environment and enjoys success in every area. Good grades and artistic excellence are status symbols. There is a sense of family at DFA. Students are accepting of one another, staff is kind and encouraging and parents are welcome. The PTO is active and parent volunteers are in evidence at all events. While the focus of DFA extracurriculars are the fine arts, they do offer a few sports. DFA has a golf team, a swim team and a tennis tennis team. Students may also participate with the augusta rowing club. I cannot recommend this school highly enough.
Davidson is one of the top schools in the state. Fine arts is a major concentration, and it's incredibly challenging. The work load is much more than a normal public school, and these kids come out with great independence and social responsibility. I'll never let my kid go anywhere else for the next five years.
