INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

I couldn't even think of any other place i would want my children to go to, this is the most amazing school/community i have ever been to. My children have the best teachers every year, they are challenged but having fun at the same time. If i could give this school 10 starts i would, i couldn't be any happier, this school is perfect.

My son transitioned to BLES from a top rated Orange County, SoCal school, and let me tell you, I don't think I could be happier with the move. He was in 4th grade for 2012-2013 school year and his teachers were AMAZING. My son has special needs (Autism), and the co-teaching system of the Special Ed teacher/General Ed teacher integration was flawless. I was very impressed with the teaching methodology and delivery format of Mrs. Lehman & Mrs. Ashadele's class. They were very engaging and I believe that their impeccable teamwork left an indelible imprint on all of their students. I volunteered twice a week and outside of the horrific copy machines, I immensely enjoyed my time at BLES. The principal is gracious and available. The attendance desk staff are exceptionally efficient, even on the days where there are a ton of people in and out for various activities. The only drawback I see is their "Specials" rotation. Physically Education every 8 days or so is not enough. I think a revamp of the Specials inclusion is in order. Otherwise, BLES is a blessing!

My daughter is in Kindergarten this year at BLES. Her teacher is amazing, and my daughter has made leaps and bounds both academically and socially. The new principal demonstrates outstanding leadership, and the faculty and staff exude positive energy throughout. Over the weekend, my daughter had an accident that has left her in a cast making it difficult to get around. This morning when I took her to school, I was met by her teacher, the principal, the assistant principal, and the school nurse . They had a plan already in place for my daughter to assure her safety in the classroom and throughout the school. They demonstrated such love and support, that I could see my daughter would be well cared for and still have minimal interruption with her learning environment. While I was not surprised by their willingness to go above and beyond for a student in their school, I continue to be thankful each day that my daughter is a student at BLES. It is an AMAZING school!!!!

My daughter started Kindergarten at Berkeley Lake Elementary School (BLES). My job is located in Alpharetta, and I wish that she could continue to go to BLES next year, because she thoroughly enjoyed the entire school year. Her teacher came up with unique ways to make learning fun. I have been amazed and impressed by the fantastic faculty and teachers at this school and the amount of community information that they supply to the parents to keep them involved. The after school events and games allows the parent to have a better understanding of how much your child is learning and give your child time to shine in their own learning environment. These events help the children feel proud of their recent accomplishments and show the parent their progress. Life is so much easier when your child enjoys school and cannot wait to go back. I would most definitely recommend Berkeley Lake Elementary School to any parent searching for the best environment for their child(ren)!

Just got the CRCT results from last year -- and BLES ranked FIRST in the STATE in language arts for the 4th grade! AMAZING!!! They increased their scores in all subgroups and in all subjects! AND they were 1st in the Duluth Cluster in 2 categories and 2nd in the Duluth cluster in the 3rd! There is a WHOLE LOT of LEARNING going on there!

This is our 4th year at BLES - I have a son in 3rd grade and another son in 1st grade. The teachers we have had in the past have been fantastic...and I can already tell this is going to be another great year! Both of my kids are receiving an excellent education, enjoy and embrace the diversity of the school and thrive in the positive environment our principal has promoted.

I cannot say enough great things about Berkeley Lake ES. My son is in the 2nd grade and LOVES going to school every day. The teachers, staff and principal are fantastic. They work hard to serve the great diversity in BLES. I am appalled at the review on 8/8/11 and think this parent would have been better prepared if questions had been asked before the first day of school. Teachers recommended water bottles at Open House, class schedules were given out and staff and volunteers were present to answer questions. Thank you BLES for creating a warm and inviting learning environment for our children.

I am amazed to read the August 8 posting. Open House was August 4, when all the reviewer's questions would have been answered, and tours of the school have been available LONG before the first day of school. This school had 30 new students registering the morning of the first day of school, so the staff was very busy (hey parents, don't you know you have a child who needs to attend school before the first day?). BLES is not small, is not dirty (the school's janitor has won county awards), and is very organized - please visit again, but not at 8 am on the first day when there is a registration crush) - I am there often and am very impressed at the control, organization, and teamwork in the classrooms and halls. Last spring, BLES 4th graders scored #1 in the state in language arts - and this is a school with a great deal of diversity! I think the reviewer's "this diversity thing" comment says alot about her views, and I hope her child learns more tolerance at school than he is learning at home- my kids have been extremely happy and successful at BLES and I am proud to say their friends come from a wide variety of backgrounds - just like the world for which we are preparing them!

We have had two of our children attend Berkeley Lake Elementary. One child is starting her second year at Duluth Middle. She attended BLES for 4th and 5th. My son started in second grade at BLES and is a 5th grader now. Prior to BLES we attended a well known private school. We wish we would have made the switch earlier! BLES is an amazing school!! We have been thrilled with the principal and staff!!! They are top notch!!! I am proud my children go to such a diverse, caring and academically strong school!!!!

My son has been at this school since kindergarten and is about to enter 5th grade. I could not have asked for more caring, involved, motivating teachers for him. Many parents don't care for the diversity at our school, but I think it makes all of the students more culturally aware, which will prepare them for the ever-changing face of our nation. I LOVE THIS SCHOOL!!!

This is a big school that feels like a small community. The teachers are fabulous and the principal goes out of her way to make all the parents and students feel welcome! My daughter loves this school! The education and programming are A+!

I love this school. I have 2 daughters who attend there, and they are as different as night and day in what they need from staff. I feel that they are both getting what they need both academically and socially. They are in rooms with teachers who care about them, and who I consider my friends. The principal is AMAZING!!!! She loves the students and fights for them to have as many programs as she can get. I also feel that she is very approachable about any issues that may come up. I was amazed a couple of weeks ago to find out that she knew my oldest child (more than a face in the crowd of 1100 students), and she just told me "She is just a great kid." She works hard to speak positives into faculty, staff, parents, and children. The school is amazing, and I am so glad to be associated with it!

I have two children who have attended Berkeley Lake. One is now in middle school and I feel she was very well prepared for the challenges there. The other child is still at Berkeley Lake and is receiving an excellent eduction. The staff is like a family and genuinely cares about the students and the school. The principal is a great, motivating leader and is very enthusiastic about student achievement. I'm so glad that we live in this community and have this school!

When reading these reviews, please note that the new principal came in for the school year 2008-2009 - there is a big change in the tone of the reviews since then! I am thrilled with Berkeley Lake Elem - my kids are in FOCUS and are consistently challanged - they love it. The level of participation with the PTA and parent volunteers is very strong and there is seldom a night event that isn't packed with students (some even sell out!).

This is my daughters 2nd year at BLES she has really shown improvement in her studies. Her teacher this year is great, he focus on the childs learning abillities as well as concerns and he also limits play time which is very important. Im glad my child is still a good student at BLES!

This is my son's first year and it hasn't been good. The teacher that he has seems to show no concern. She tends to focus more on the students that attended preschool. And never sends any assignment for homework upon request.

My Son is in 2nd grade and has attended Berkeley Lake since Kindergarten. This school is indeed very diverse. The teachers and staff at the school are very dedicated and open. The PTA at BLES is very active. BLES offers a variety of fun and challenging afterschool programs with Terrific Thursdays. I have seen a progress in my Son with his knowledge and learning over these 3 years.

I have 2 children at BLES, since they got in, one has met my expectations of learning, but the other one has had very easy teachers, that seem to use the class to play games and make it fun, instead of learning, almost zero homework for the lower grades. Seem that the volunteers are always the same group of mothers, and those are usually the parents of kids in the focus program. I don't like the constant fund raisers during the year, and mostly are to raise funds for other organizations and not for the school itself that really needs a little makeup in and out. They need to update their media materials, music programs and PE and stop jamming the kids in trailers.

This school is struggling to do the best it can with limited resources. Parent involvement is there but a small group pulls the weight for the whole. Some PTA committees have no volunteers. THe focus is on the lower level students & the brightest are not challenged....mediocrity.

My daughter is in 2nd grade and has attended Berkeley Lake since Kindergarten. This school is indeed very diverse, but is a good reflection of the community in which we live. Despite or maybe because of its diversity, it functions very harmoniously. The teachers and staff at the school are very dedicated and open. They solicit feedback and involvement of parents in all aspects of their child's education. The principal (Leigh Westcott) is accessible and enthusiastic, and has taken valuable time to help me sort out educational questions personally. The PTA at BLES is very active. I volunteer in the Media Center (library) and get to see the school in action weekly. BLES Media Center boasts the highest level of volunteerism among all the area schools. We even have two dads this year helping out. BLES offers a variety of fun and challenging afterschool programs with Terrific Thursdays.

We are thrilled with the wonderful teachers and administrators at BLES and we love that the diversity is more appropriate to the overall community that we live in than other schools in the area. We also feel like the teachers do a great job of meeting the needs of all students, from the well above average to the learning challenged.

I think BLES is a great school. I have two children there. The teachers are great and so is Leigh Wescott (principal) and her staff. I also like the diversity in the student population. Unfortunately, there are some parents who think that diversity means poor school performance and pull their kids out due to an unfounded fear factor. Berkeley Lake does a very good job of meeting the needs of kids from diverse backgrounds and varying academic skill levels. Great school!

Berkeley Lake has really impressed me as a parent. The teachers are able to meet my child's needs. My child is above average, and the teachers challenge him. Teachers often group the students by ability, so I know my son is getting what he needs. I will not move because I am so happy with his three years in this public school. I am meeting more and more parents who are getting fed up with private school and are ready to enroll at Berkeley Lake.

Our son attended Berkeley Lake Elementary for two years. The biggest reason we pulled him is because there is no focus on challenging the smarter kids. The focus is on uniformity and dropping to the least common denomenator. The citizens of Gwinnett County are getting a very poor return on their tax dollars at this school.

My son has been at Berkeley Lake since Kindergarden. It has been a wonderful experience for both of us. I feel that the teachers and parents are very involved! I have wanted to move further into North Gwinnett but I will not until he finishes 5th grade at Berkeley Lake. I have to admit, the teachers are really wonderful! I love this school and I will be very sad when my son walks down Berkeley Hall for the last time next year. Allison Rodgers

i would like to see BLES challenge the kids a bit more academically. i agree with another comment that they focus so much on 'no child left behind' that they are afraid to raise their academic standards...particularly at the K5 thru 2nd grade level; 3rd, 4th, and 5th seem to be more challenging. also, as parents, we have to stay involved and find ways to challenge our kids academically outside of just sending them to school expecting them to get it all there.

I have one child in this school and am extremely disappointed. There is very little involvement by anyone. The school seems more concerned with teaching the kids manners than with teaching them an education. My child is constantly bored and there is no distinction between excelerated learners, average learners, and basic skills learners. It is an overwhelming feeling of sadness and disappoint on a daily basis. There is not enough extracurricular activities on a daily basis. The academics are at a very low standard, so 'no one is left behind.'

The administation is not very supportive of their teachers. I saw many teachers who were always stressed out. The school also has a high turnover rate of teachers. Their staff is made up of mostly first or second year teachers. There was not a friendly atmostphere in the school. Also, the school provided information in Spanish but not in any other languages.

My child is in first grade and really enjoys school! The teachers are great and everyone seems to really work together. There is an extreme amount of parent involvement. In fact, I am involved and don't feel that I do enough. A friend of mine who's son is now in Fulton County at Barnwell Elementary was told that he came from an excellent school, based on his performance, so that speaks volumes. We are looking to move to another home and I want to definitely stay in the Berkeley Lake Elementary area. This is my second year of having a child at BLES and I look forward to many more quality years because I have a daughter who will be there next year.

My child went to kindergarten at Berkely Lake. I was sorely disapointed. Being a former teacher I know how the system works. The class was continually pulling kids out for specials (which were never made up) The computer lab was lacking in headphones and updated programs. There is little if any parental involvement. This school made me very sad for the children.
