Altama Elementary was the best school Ever! My fondest childhood memories began here from 1978-1982. My favorite teachers were Mrs. Eula Wells, Ms. Kaye Roberson & Ms. Dottye McClendon....course it was a different time back then. Teachers really cared about a child's academics & well being. There was creativity, parent involvement and most of all we acted like children and were into childish things like -playing outside, Sesame Street, arts & crafts, games, performing in school plays at PTA. The teacher's job is to channel their inner child and make learning fun and inspirational. The parent's job is to show interest, reinforce, volunteer, teach their child good moral values and come to PTA. Take the computers out and of elementary schools and let these kids PLAY and watch Sesame Street and sing songs from the Sound of Music & Mary Poppins!!!!
This is an old school with teachers that are very much set in their ways and are not ready to change with time.My child is not learning very much and is not progressing well in each grade.Students that learn slower are left behind and are not very eager about asking teachers for help because of a lack of encouragement.Teachers have to not always be critical to write bad reports but also good.
I agree with both comments. Teachers do seem to try very hard to teach students. Alot of the parents are not involved so these childen disstract the children who are trying to learn. I also feel the children are not properly supervised and get away with racial commants.
I present all of Altama's staff with a standing ovation for their hard work and dedication to encourage and inspire students to achieve and succeed. Keep up the Good Work Altama...Go Eagles!!!
I am a teacher at Altama and after reading through some of these reviews, I have not been disheeartened a bit. I know what this staff goes through everyday and I know the staff here at Altama try our hardest everyday to push these children to do their personal best! Now my challenge to you is to take a walk in our shoes. We do so much with little resources and very little parent participation and support. We do appreciate the parent support we do have but many of our students just do not have those positive home influences, so we not only have to teach them the required curriculum, we are also expected to parent some of our students!
my son is new to the school but not the school system and everyday he comes home, he says he loves his new school! i dont know how long it will last but he is off to a good start! i am so excited that he is excited about learning again!!!!
Altama Elementary School soared to new heights this year. With staff members who did whatever it took to ensure students' success, children made significant gains in all curricular areas. Altama has state-of-the-art, cutting edge technology including 21st century classrooms that are equipped with interactive white boards. In the 2008-2009 school year, students will have opportunities to participate in programs such as Chess, Recycling, Student Council, Drama, News Broadcasting, Chorus, Foreign Language, and Beta Club to name a few. The new school theme will encompass the three C's: character, citizenship, and communication. Please visit Altama's website, or better yet, come see for yourself all the wonderful things that are happening at Altama Elementary School of Leadership and Global Communication!
Altama Elementary has changed over the last year. The image projected in the community is misrepresented. As you walk into the front doors you will get a welcomed feeling that's conducive to an excellent learning environment. Students are happy to be at school everyday. The classroom atmosphere is exciting with teaching and learning as the top priority. Our Parent Teacher Association (PTA)is in full bloom with lots of parents taking an active role. Come visit us.....our new school theme for the 2008-2009 School Year is The Academy of Leadership and Global Communication.
Altama Elementary is the worst school in Glynn County.. I have lived in the Brunswick area for quite sometime. This is my children's first year attending Altama. And this has been the worst year that we've ever had. My children was attending another school in this area since they started Kindergarten. And this year, we were made to attend this school, because this school is in our zoning area. And since, my children has attended this school, its been a constant struggle with their grades and their attitude about school. As a parent, I have many issues with this school that I don't enough space to write in this review . My children has experienced, heard and witnessed some much at this school that would floor you. Please think twice before sending your child to this school, because my children will not be returning to Altama.
Altama, is trying to be a good school and to some it may be, but coming from a school in Florida that was ranked one of the top. This school just doesn't meet one thing on my list.(sad) Teachers do not watch their students, and if they did they would not be rude, racist, and say words that kids should not say. If you are wanting a good education this is not the school for you .I would try hard to get your child to go to the island, private school, or home school. (big in the area) I love to get involved in my childs school, but I find (PTA, helping teachers, etc.) myself not wanting to help. Glynn County schools are not very good unless you go to the island.
