Cambridge Academy has provided a very good academic program for my two children. The expectation is that all children can excel and perform. All of the teachers and administrators are very passionate about providing a good education. The multigrade level classes has been an asset for my children to have an opportunity to be exposed to even more challenges. My neighbors child went to Cambridge from kindergarten until 7th grade and was placed into the challenge class when he finished Cambridge and entered eight grade. His new school gave him a math placement test and he scored tenth grade sixth month and has made the all A's honor roll every semester. Of course the key to any child's success is parental involvement and that is strongly stressed here, we are our children's first teacher. I know many people will write different reviews for anything stores, restaurants, schools etc. based on their own experiences and unfortunately we only hear one side of the story, but if you are seeking an excellent foundation for your child pay any school a visit and make and informed decision for yourself. I am extremely glad I made this choice for children.
Cambridge Academy offers a wonderful pre-school program. The teachers and leadership are warm, concerned and extremely caring of each child. The curriculum is challenging yet age appropriate. They also offer opportunities for extra activitities such as karate, dance and music lessons. Our child has grown and matured both academically and socially. Will look forward to exploring what the upper shcool has to offer.
My son started at Cambridge towards the end of the school year (February) for 3K last year. I was worried that his learning curve would be too steep and he would be at a disadvantage compared to the other 3-year-olds who started in the fall. When he started, he knew how to spell his name but didn't know how to write his name. Within 2 weeks, he was writing his name, counting to 20, reciting the days of the week, months of the year, etc. The 3K teacher Ms. Ellison (who is no longer there) was a wonderful educator. My son has really learned a lot during his tenure at Cambridge. Now in Pre-K, I am amazed at how much he has absorbed. He's reading, writing words, has monthly spelling tests, completed a Black History project, and is learning how to tell time, add and subtract. The administrators are friendly and know each child personally. The disadvantages are the facilities and resources are outdated, the lower-grades (i.e., 3K, 4K) class sizes are large (e.g., 20-25 kids like public school class sizes), and there is only one class per grade. Regarding the latter, if the teacher's style does not work well for you or your child, there are no other options for that grade.
My child was enrolled in this school throughout until 1st grade. I am a parent who is very involved in my child's academics. I often sat in in the classroom and noticed that the way the first grade teacher spoke to the children was in a disdainful manner. I began noticing a change in my child with him not wanting to go to school. This was never an issue before, he has always loved school. The second change was his grades slipping... He's never had less than an "A" on anything up until this point. He began begging me to sit in the classroom on a daily basis stating that the teacher was mean. The more I sat in on the class the more uneasy I became with the teacher and her attitude towards the children and communicated my concerns with her. During his final week at the school he came home and informed me that the teacher ripped up his work and stuffed it down his shirt when he got the answers wrong. I confronted her about it and she stated "I did rip it up but I didn't stuff it down his shirt, I gave it to him close." I was vexed and withdrew him immediately. I enrolled my son in another private school where his love for learning and high grades have returned.
Positives: School administration is very friendly. Price is reasonable but you pay for what you get! Negatives: Not academically challenging for children 6 & up Outdated! Don't offer foreign languages on a consistent basis. Only one computer for the children to use which is in itself very outdated! No cafeteria or gym!
Cambridge is a great school to grow young minds in South DeKalb. You do not have to settle for what the county has to offer for pre-K through elementary.
If u are an advocate for your child, Cambridge is not the school for u.We had been very pleased parents until this school year. When our child entered 1st grade, the nurturing environment, the warmth of the teacher, the professionalism of the leadership all declined fast.We began 1st grade where the 1st grade teacher immediately established a very rigid, punitive learning environment for the class, which was a drastic contrast from the previous grades. My son would display feelings fear & frustration. As most concerned parents would do, we addressed these concerns with the teacher first, then leadership, but didn't see much change. In our efforts to advocate for our child, we were retaliated against and asked to find another school for our child and given 4 days to do so in the middle of the year. We were stunned at the unprofessional actions of the school leadership after being loyal Cambridge parents, referring colleagues & friends to their school, etc. The most unfortunate outcome was for our child, who has been abruptly pulled out of his school. The school could not have any child's best interest. Otherwise, this situation would have been handled professionalism & integrity
My daughyter has been attending Cambridge since she was 21/2. She is currently in the three-year old class and I will get a chance to really see how learning process during this year's transition with a new teacher. I can truly say that I have been impressed thus far. My child came to Cambridge from an in-home day care and it took a while for her to adapt to her new environment, but I must say her two-year old teacher was a gift from GOD and she was truly a blessing to her academic and social development. Muy husband and I were amazed by the campassion and dedication of her teacher. I am anxious to see how her learning experience will be this school year.
I just wanted to share that I am thoroughly impressed with this school. The prior school my 3 yr old went to was not parent/child friendly. The staff was rude and you were almost intimidated with expressing your concerns. With Cambridge, the staff is friendly, the teachers are great, and my child loves it. He is already reading and writing. This school makes learning fun and the academic curriculum is challenging. I love this school and will continue to send our child until we move out of the area (and then I still might continue to take him).
I have been going to cambridge for 9 years now and let me say i just love it.3 Months ago i started to fail in math and reading but my teacher kept on encouraging me and eventually i got up from a 'c' in reading to a 'a' from a 'd' in math to a 'b' and now i am passing in all my classes. One thing i can say about all the teachers in that school is that they all want the best from you and they want you to give your all. They dont give up on you, there is work involved for youto do and you must get it done and yes all of this is comming from a current student. But basically the kids are friendly the teachers are friendly and the whole school is a great place!
During the school search process, I came across this school on this website. The office staff were all personable and welcoming. This is my daughter's first year at Cambridge, and I am pleased thus far. She is 4 years old, was evaluated, and eventually placed in K5. Just one week in, I see she has such an eagerness to learn, is excited about homework, and looks forward to going to class every day. Her teacher is a very seasoned Kindergarten teacher with exceptional credentials (this is her 26th Kindergarten class, and her 12th year at Cambridge). The principal is a hands-on administrator with a lot of experience as well. The curriculum is challenging, but not overwhelming - my daughter is four but reading on a first grade level.
My son has been a student at this school for 1 year now. I have seen a tremendous difference in his learning about a month after enrolling him into this school. Every day he is learning something different and shows more advancement than other kids his age. I would highly recommend this school if you re looking for your child to be above average when they leave this school.
My daughter has been enrolled at Cambridge since she was 2.5. She is four now and I am extremely pleased with her academic progress. She has been exposed to things that other children don't get until much later in their schooling. The teachers and administrators have taken the time to learn my child and they really care about her success emotionally and academically. They have an open door policy and welcome questions and input. The facility is older and I have noticed teacher turnover, but it seemed to benefit the school. At four my child can count to one hundred , count by 5's and 10's, add and subtract, knows time and money, can discuss the parts of an insect, knows the Planets and Continents, can read simple sentences, and more. Everyday I am amazed at how much she knows. I would recommend this school to anyone.
I currently have two children at Cambridge. A 3rd grader and a K4 student. I am quite pleased with the education that my children receive. The administration CARE deeply for these children. They take the time to get to know them and the way that they learn best. When I speak to colleagues about what my daugter is doing in her K4 class, they stare in amazement because their children are not being challenged with similiar material. If you want your children to be enriched and nourished academically and socially, consider this school in your search.
I am very satisfied with my daughter's education at Cambridge Academy. She is starting the 2nd grade and has been there since I removed her from another private school 2 years ago. My child has had high standardized test scores and great grades. Administration CARES about the kids and not just the $$. Each new teacher has seemed to be better than the previous. Isn't that better than retaining mediocre teachers??? But, you can't satisfy some people.......just my 2 cents.
My child had been a student there for over 4 years and there still had not been any significant changes or improvements in upgrading the facilities. The classrooms date back to the 80's and as far as teaching and education the morale was very low for the teachers with a very high teacher turnover rate. They need to upgrade facilities (get computers, desks, chairs), offer incentives for the teachers (healthcare benefits, pay raises etc.) Some grade levels are combined making it difficult for some students to grasp and learn material at there grade level. My child was not academically prepared for the next level because there was not enough time spent in his/her grade level to teach what was needed to move on. Now I have to pay for private tutoring in areas that were not covered in the school year when I paid tuition for a higher standard of education.
My child attended this academy from age 3years through 6th grade and did exceptionally well both academically and socially. After completion my child was accepted into a competitive private school and was very well prepared for the rigor and discipline. Great care is taken to ensure that the students receive a very well rounded program balanced with a lot of nurturing and support.
This school does a great job teaching social skills and sheltering its students from unacceptable behavior typically displayed in public schools. However, most of the teachers here are not certified, and are poorly trained when it comes to teaching methods and skills. There is a high teacher turnover rate, which causes the children to suffer in the long run. The school needs to do something to attract better qualified teachers, and give them incentives to stay there.
My husband and I are greatful that our daughter was able to attend this school. We love and appreciate the education she is getting that not only focuses on academics but helps them become more well rounded people. The love and support we have received from the administration has been terrific.
The quality of the academic program at Cambridge Academy is exceptional. The curriculum is strong and replete of challenge. Students are accepted at 2 and half years of age through 7th grade which enables the school to follow them from preschool to middle school. The atmosphere is warm and nurturing. Music, art, Spanish, chess, karate, and PE, are all offered as part of the extracurricular activities. Cambridge has been in the business of educating students since 1960 and is accredited with quality by the Georgia Accrediting Commission. There is a strong level of parental involvement and parents are expected to be an integral part of their child's education. Parents of the preschoolers are required to work a minimum of 5 hours in the class within the calendar year. The quality of the program is very good.
