Mill Creek is a great school academically. However, it suffers greatly within diversity. I also feel like the school only caters to one style of teaching and students that are struggling are falling through the cracks. I hope the following school year will be better. There is way too many students attending Mill Creek High School!
Mill Creek High Has Great students because it is what is expected. we do not sell our kids short. They are told they can and so they do. Great parent involvement here. Very pleased with this school . I have one who graduated last year and a freshman this year. Very proud of my kids and their acomplishments!
Personally, I have been highly impressed with this school. My daughter was a freshman this past year and she excelled far more than I could have ever expected. The teachers are caring, concerned and treat my daughter with the respect. My daughter is not a prep, she is not exceptionally smart, and does not play sports but the teachers love her for her personality and have encouraged her to find her place among the masses. Mill Creek only had 3600 students at open last year so I think that is a far cry from 6000. For her, the more students the more friends she can make.
Before sending my kids to this school I was impressed at what I'd heard. But having my kids attend was the worst thing I could have subjected them to. If your kids aren't exceptionally smart and timid this is not the place for them. Oh yeah, also if they are African American, don't bother either. Things are overlooked that shouldn't be. It does no good to complain because their voices will not be heard. I'm looking to send mine elsewhere!
New schools are now built and open for 2 years ...school has become even worse and a lot more problems .....Mountain Veiw only has 5oo students while mill creek still have 6700. Never ending problem!
The school is simply too large and bureaucratic to provide students with more one on one instruction and character development.
omg, seriously like the worst school ever, but what should I expect from a public school?? i only attented here for maybe a week at the most, the teachers who horrible,i'm a sophomore in high school and was learning stuff that i had already been taught in the 8th grade at my old school. the students where just gross. but thank god, daddy let me move back to cali with my mommy so i could go back to my private school. public schools are just a said excuse for an education, but really the private schools in this area who horrible to,but what should someone expect from the south?? i would not recommond this school to anyone.
I currently attend Mill Creek. The large student population makes for very crowded halls but more friend opportunities. I am in the gifted program so my teachers are all very qualified. I enjoy talking to them on a more personal level as well. They care about each individual student and are friendly to everyone. The principal, Dr. Markham is awesome. He is a war veteran and has interesting stories as well as a passion for teaching. He is very fair. I love this school.
My child has not excelled in this school to the ability I know she has. She is very overwhelmed and intimidated by the size and population of students at this school.. I myself get overwhelmed when going to the school. I feel that a lot gets overlooked at this school and have not been impressed. I am looking now for another school for my daughter to attend.
I started this 9th grade this year at this school and i have to say it is outstanding i have never done so much hard work and actually get a's i have never made a's till now but some of the teachers are very rude at times but it is a great school especially if you love any type of sport they have almost a 100 of them so i would really choose this school you will not regret it
My child received an outstanding education at this institution. The size allowed for an astounding number of opportunities. Not many schools offer the number of AP, advanced art, food and nutrition and engineering classes. I never felt that my child was overlooked. I was constantly informed of her progress and personally contacted by the teachers if there was a problem. Overall, outstanding.
The school is so overwhelmingly large that if a child has special needs, it is up to the parent to advocate for services. There are many problems within the school that get overlooked due to the immense size of the school.
Mill Creek is among the top five percent of the best schools in America. The teaching staff is phenomenal and very well educated in their craft. As a gifted student, I was able to have the honor of having teachers with specialist and doctorate degrees. Also as an art student I know that Mill Creek Arts have exceeded the expectations of Jim Markham. The Art program is very nice and all of the art teachers are very talented. The school is also very safe, the staff does not have any tolerance for fights. Jim Markham takes violence personal and will not allow it. It was a great school to go to, and Gwinnett County Schools in general are very good.
The communication from the teacher is very good and parent involvement is at a very high level and is welcomed by the staff
Great school for a very large school. I find the academics challenging and the athletics first rate. Very clean, very friendly.
I'm a parent of a freshman and I have to strongly disagree with the comment about the lack of information provided by Mill Creek. Just yesterday I received a recorded phone message reminding me that students will be receiving their six-week progress reports today. I have received these same recorded messages in the past reminding me of meetings, grade reports, elections, etc. In addition, the school will send parents text messages with important news but you have to be sure to provide your cell number as noted on the school's website. Speaking of the website, I noticed the powerpoint from the recent freshman meeting is posted so that info is available to those who missed the meeting. I also received a postcard in the mail about this meeting. With 4000+ students I would imagine it is economically & environmentally unfeasible to send paper communication home... As far as football goes,
I agree--communication is excellent. Also, the administration is very proactive in safety concerns; I think every part of this huge campus is covered by a camera with people whose job it is to monitor them. With over 70 clubs, there is something for everyone, and the administration encourages extracurricular involvement, saying studies show that it is linked with academic success. My son, mostly in gifted classes has excellent teachers. Students who get all A's for a semester are invited to a breakfast that is a feast, according to my son. This is our first year at this huge school after being in much smaller schools, and we're very happy with it. The size will decrease next year when a new high school opens
MCHS is very large and spread its priorities too thin. We are frustrated in the lack of early communication from the school regarding important meetings - frequently told about things last minute. It would be great if information could be sent home for those unable to attend. While they are prominent and noted for athletic achievements, it is completely obvious that football reigns supreme in the eyes of the administration, staff and community at large. Some sports are not even provided transportation or a supplement to help with the program costs, like tennis, which is a very popular sport in Atlanta. Academics = 4; All other = 2.
The extra curricular activities excell at Mill Creek High School, which leads me to the level of concern 'most' of the teachers have with the actual 'teaching' of the students. They indicate that they are available for the students but must work around the involvement of the teachers after school activities. Are they teachers or are they coaches? Which is more important, that the school become #1 in sports ot that our children learn?
