My son has attended Mt. Zion for the last 2 years. I think this is a great school! My son also likes the school. I think they have great leadership. All the staff really seems to care about the students. They also have a lot of activities for the kids. This year they had a talent show, dances, and most recently the Spring Fling. My son has enjoyed all the events. From an educational standpoint, I am pleased with the progress my son has made throughout the year. He truly has a good understanding of what he needs to know in order to be successful. Also my son's teacher, Ms. Price, was selected as Teacher of the Year for the 2009-2010 school year!
I recently moved here at the beginning of the school term and I absolutely love this school. The teachers are wonderful and they offer many programs and chances for the students to get the time and attention they need individually. There safety level is also wonderful. They have staff out every morning and afternoon, rain, sleet, or snow walking our kids into the building. I think this school is awesome.
Overall, my opinion on this school is okay. Although I would like to see ethnic education broadened a bit more. It's great they showed interest in educating the children in black history and hispanic heritage, but I have yet to see Asians, Europeans, Native Americans represented in the same way. If we demand equality, shouldn't we demand it for all?
This is definitely a school of excellence. I am a previous teacher of Mt. Zion and I miss it terribly. I have taught at several schools around the country and not much compares to the compassion and consistency that the school offers students. The academics are top notch and teachers truly care about students. There is a good diversity amongst the staff. The best thing about Mt. Zion was the leadership. The principal and vice principal are exemplary and should be commended for their efforts.
My daughter went to Mt Zion Elementary from K to 5th grade. My overall view on the academics is about average. If I had my choice I would have sent her to another school that had a better academic program. However, I'm not totally dissatisfied with the quality of education she received, I just don't think they compare to other schools particularly on the north side of town. She had to go to get outside tutoring for reading and comprehension because she was just not getting the attention she needed in the classrooms (which class sizes are too large in my opinion). Hopefully with the addition of the new school, the overall ratings for this school will improve. One thing I can say - the faculty and the staff ADORE these kids! That makes up a some for the lack of academic quality.
My review of Mt.Zion Elementary is overall satisfactory at this point. In November of 2006 I would have been in the area of this school for one year. My children are doing well in all areas. I believe they have great teachers. However, my only complaint is their over board protection of letting parents visit the class rooms to check on their child without the teacher or the student having knowledge that you were there. I believe they should allow you to check in with the office and have a surprise visit to peep in on your child from time to time w/o having to notify the teacher. You should be allowed this opportunity w/o entering the class rooms or disturbing the class. This is my biggest issue with this school.
