Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

I did HB251 to get my son in a better Middle School and he is now a 7th grader at Awtrey Middle School. I am very pleased with the staff of 7th grade teachers (Ms. lipscomb; Ms. Lytle; Mr. Perry; Ms. Smyre and Ms. Thompson). They are dedicated to what they are doing and and strive for academics excellence. my son is being challenged and all of his teachers see his potential for greatness. Ms. Evans as been a support as well as a blessing. I can contact them via email and they get back with me right away. I know my son will continue to do well at Awtrey Middle School because he has the support of his teachers as well as his family. Thanks for all you do.

My oldest child attended Awtrey before Jeff Crawford was principal and before the opening of Barber Middle School. Awtrey has made a major transformation since this time and I am pleasantly surprised and proud of this school. Awtrey Middle School is an excellent school. All grades lead as a team and teachers are encouraging students to join groups such as band, orchestra, chorus. My child is an athlete but found he was quite a musician after meeting band teacher Mr. Sessoms. This school is focused on academics and challenging students to do more. The teachers are happy and motivate children in a positive way to do more.

This school is the worst I have ever seen with issues of bullying. My child has bullies at school and on the bus and then they taunt him all the way home. No one wants to do anything about it. The school doesn't help with these issues at all. It's out of control at this school. I wouldn't recommend any parent to send their kid to this school. I know several parents with children going through the same issues.

I am very disapointed by this school. The teachers try so very hard to keep the students under control, but the students still act up. The students are influenced by the wrong things. The bully rate is sky high here, even I had issues being bullied. The principal leadership is very poor also. And, the ones that are doing their work and making the A's are the ones being bullied because the failing kids are intimidated by their abilty to suceed. It literally takes 20 minutes for the the teacher to get all of the students under control. We spend more time getting lectures than doing schoolwork. Kids here love to fail and be a "bad boy/girl", they simply think it's cool.. The classrooms are way too big for one teacher. This school is cheap and has a terriblle learning envoriment. Period.

This is my first year at Awtrey, and I think that this is the BEST school I have ever been to. But for a person like me, I want to be able to show my talents, but there is no kind of group here to join to do that. But other than that, Awtrey is a great school :)

Awtrey has wonderful teachers, counselors, and administrators that care about the students and their educational goals. The principal does not tolerate bullying or disorderly conduct. Many parents outside of the school think Awtrey has a bad reputation, but it is not true. My child is an honor student at Awtrey.

I've been going to this school since 6th grade and im about to graduate from here this year and going to North Cobb High School. I like this school but the students here are not that much nice. The students here are mostly bullies and im not telling a lie because the longer I have been here I have seen alot what have happened. Don't get me wrong I love this school because they want us to do great in our education. If the students had a better attitude then I will give the school 5 stars.

It has been my experience that this school is certainly not one of the better Cobb Cty schools. This school has failed in teaching students critical thinking & problem solving skills. Instead, the curriculm appears to be CRCT based. Those in target classes are doing quite well, it is the general population that gives me much concern. Labeling has become common.

i don't see [why] so many people say, 'oh my gosh Awtrey is the worst school ever'! well im a student that goes here and has siblings that has gone here and is saying that Awtrey is a great school. I mean its not the bet but it's a good school and I learn a lot there.

Awtrey is a great school. The principle is the best in town. The bullying rate has been completely solved. New rule have been issued toward that situation. Awtrey also has some of the best teachers in the county. One in Social Studies, and the other in Language arts. I would gladly recommend that Awtrey is a great school for your child.

I am very disappointed in Awtrey. Most of the teachers are rude and just don't care. The administrators are horrible. Bad attitudes are all over this school. I wouldn't recommend this school for my child. This was my child's first year there and if I have to do it again, she wouldn't go there. Not impressed at all.

My daughter has been bullied and harassed at Awtrey for 2 years. We have not other choice but awtrey or loose a income and home school which we are just about ready to do! To crowded even with the split, poor preperation for high school. I've had 2 other children who both needed intensive tutoring in freshman year to catch them up to par. NO NO NO, do not send you child if at all possible!

I have had one child go through Awtrey and I must say this school did not prepare her for high school. What she did get out of the school was music. She is a fantastic musician. But music will not get her through life. A good well balanced education will. My second child will be leaving this school come May. She pretty much holds her own yet since the school was divided and half of the children and teachers went to Barber Elementary the school has fallen well below educational expectation. Again the music program is awesome. I have heard from teachers in the North Cobb High School that the math program does not prepare these children for High School.

I have just graduated from awtrey last year. I have to say, its not a good school at all. The teachers do not teach. Most teachers are nice, with the exception of a few. There are a lot of gang/drug problems. Kids have no freedom here.

I disagree with the last comment, it is the teachers and parents job to educate our children, I have 2 children currently at Awtrey and we have had issues with grades from both of them at times, but lets remember that middle school is probably the toughest time in a students life, with hormones and peer pressure coming into play. I make sure I go to the open house before school starts and I meet with all of their teachers and give each my phone number and email address, I communicate with them all regularly through out the year, in good times and in bad. As for discipline I blame the school board, Awtrey is at almost double the capcity it should be, but a new school opens in 2005 so that should help. I also work at another middle school in an affluent area-they also have the same problems.

I have a daughter that attends Awtrey and she hates it. She complains that the teachers do not have time to listen to the students when they try to express themselves about a situation and that is very frustrating. I do not like this school and will be removing my child from this school as soon as school ends I'm from up north and this school is the worst, there's no programs for the students who are struggling except in the morning well what about the parents who children can't make it @ 8:00am do the children just suffer and just continue to struggle. Yes we as parents have to help but them as teachers get paid to teach and they need to do just that. Yes teachers are under paid but this is the job/career they choose so do your job. Thank You New York

I wish I'd known about this site before enrolling my son in Awtrey today. I surely hope that the experience will not be that of more than half of the commentators on this site. I'm a very involved parents. Awtrey's job is to educate my child. If they can't handle that, then we will be compensating for the inability or lack of interest in doing their jobs.

I got my daughter out of that school as soon as the year ended. The school is out of control and i totally agree with what the other parents are saying on here. Its not a safe enviroment for your children. My daughter was a minority at this school.

I would like to agree more with the latter few comments more than with the first several comments. I have one daughter who is at North Cobb now who attended Awtrey for 3 years and I also have a daughter who is a rising 8th grader. Based on what my 8th grader tells me, there is a basic disrespect and disregard for authority with a good number of students at Awtrey. You should hear the horror stories about the bus! I have to constantly remind her to choose her friends carefully and not to get caught up with the 'cool crowd'. Her teachers communicate beautifully with me. It takes the parents showing that they want to be involved. The middle school years are a difficult time for kids and the teachers should be applauded with what they have to put up with.

My son was a student at Awtrey, and my daughter is now a student there. Our experience has been very good. My family can personally attest to the deep involvement of the principal and teachers in the success of the students. The music program is wonderful, by the way.

It should be noted that most respondents to these polls will use this forum as an opportunity to vent. Those with words of praise will seldom speak. I have had great experiences with Awtrey. If any of these parents had ever had to teach middle school, they would understand the need for discipline and control. It isn't elementary school anymore, and people (kids) are not always nice. I have had two children attend Awtrey, and I can say that the attitude you receive from the staff is largely a result of the attitude you and your children express. This is human nature. The principal and faculty of that school have always been there for our children. I will stand behind them.

I had two sons attend Awtrey. One son had difficulty in school but I never heard a word from one of his teachers. They just let him flunk without an apparent care. The philosophy of this school and North Cobb High is that students should be more 'responsible' while not a word is mentioned about teacher responsibility to inspire, problem-solve, or even meet with parents to nip problems in the bud. Students are graded more on compliance to rules than true mastery of subjects.

I agree that this school is run like a prison and that obtaining feedback from teachers is next to impossible. This is my 6th grade childs first and last year at Awtrey Middle.

The teachers and administrators have a disease amongst them of bad attitude toward the childern. The faculty diciplines for the littlest things. Kids can't be kids anymore. It gets to be ridiculous.

This school is run more like a prison than an educational instituation. I sent both of my boys to this school. Both of them were very motivated students when they entered Awtrey, but within months they had no interest at all in school. There is no motivation, no teacher-parent contact, and no individual attention. The only time you get to see the teachers is if you request a conference with the teaching team. I would not advise doing this, because they come prepared to cover their butts. They tell you how they are working to teach your child, but your child is not motivated. They try to put all of the blame on the child or parent. If you try to come to class to see what is going on, they act as if there is something wrong with this, and later take it out on the child. I cannot wait to move my kids out of this school.

Awtrey is an excellent school with a well-organized and caring principal and staff. Awtrey's dietician does not let anyone go hungry. A free sandwich and milk is provided to a child without lunch money.

As a former student and now, this year, past parent of 2 children that attended Awtrey, I can agree with the first comment. Oh, how things have changed! When I went to Awtrey the teachers went out of their way to call a parent that needed to be called, for any reason. I have been told for the past 4 (2 children attending from 1999-2003)years that they (teachers, principals and administrators included)don't have time to call me. Unacceptable!

The previous parent comment does not truly reflect the quality of this school, Awtrey Middle school is an excellent middle school, with an excellent Principal and staff, also top line teachers,I have two students to graduate from this school, twelve years apart, so I have had more insight than most for this school the only negative comment I would make is the lunch room staff treatment of students and teachers alike.
