I do not know about the "Regular Ed" program, but I strongly suggest if you have a special needs child DO NOT send them to Berkmar MS. My child regressed SEVERELY this last year. (After exceeding expectations in the previous years) This school has been a nightmare since it has been built.
My daughter is an 8th grader this year. When she started at Berkmar we were in the school's district. At the end of her 6th grade year we moved & have transferred her since. I won't lie and say this is the most academically stimulating school in the county, but we think it has the perfect balance for her. She's an A/B student, in Symphony Orchestra, track club, & now 8th grade girl's basketball. She's a fairly shy child & has suffered from low self-confidence. The school's principle is wonderful. Her 7th grade science teacher is like a father to her. Her Orchestra & Basketball instructors have helped her develop tremendously. The teachers challenge her in a way that doesn't intimidate or frighten her. This may not be THE school for everyone's child, but its just right for ours.
I believe that this school is a great school; and has opened wide opportunities for all students, that welcome themselves into it. It gives the students rights and freedoms but also backs off a little, making them feel safe. The teachers are caring and nicely safe. They respect the students the way they should. And the students there are marvelous; i for one have met them all personally; i think this school is amazing. --Mother of 4 that attend.
I love this school. The way they keep these kids in line is great. They give them enough room to 'test the waters' but not enough to 'get wet'. In other words, they do need to be guided in middle school. Large stature does not correlate with maturity. They are still kids. My son is an 8th grader there and my youngest is in 5th grade ready to be a Patriot next year. One thing, I don't have fear when my child goes to school, and thats great. My children are also great achievers and BMS nurtures that.
Reading some of the reviews of this school, experiences range from very disatified to very satisfied. What I do know about Berkmar Middle School is that they have one day a week designated for all to teachers to tutor all students in the morning, they have opened up the school on Saturdays to helps students with projects and had a Saturday program to help all students struggling to take an extra class so they can pass tests in the Spring, and all of the teachers send progress reports home every 3 weeks. With all of that in place, I have to question the reviews that state that their child doesn't get any help and that parents don't get updates. It is obvious in some of these reviews as to which parents are actively involved and which ones don't take any action to find out what is available at Berkmar Middle.
It's funny how I just read a parents review about this school stating how they get updates on their childs progress, I havent received not one update or email on my childs progress this year. I guess if the child is not a great straight 'A' student then their not worthy of the teachers attention. I have found this to be this case with this school that they do only care about the kids that are doing good not interested in the average kids or the ones that are struggling. And I advise all parents to to reconsider sending their kids to the high school (Berkmar) if you have any intentions on sending your kids to college! I dont see either one of these schools getting better anytime soon.
My oldest son went to the school when if first opened. The administration wasn't that great but the teachers my son had were wonderful. My youngest son and my nephew are there now. The administration they have in place on are 100% better than the previous and I love it. I just came from a FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athelets) banquet and it was great!!! I think Berkmar middles has made a great improvement since they have been open.
This school has some of the rudest and unprofessional teachers. My child was made fun of in front of a teacher who did nothing! The administrators do not listen to the parents and give you the clear understanding that they don't want parents in the school. It has to be one of the most poorly run schools in Gwinnett County. Thank God we are almost out of there!
I have been at Berkmar Middle School since 6th grade and its been a bumpy ride. The administration can care less about your thoughts and the teachers are always right.
