I cannot imagine an environment better suited to helping my children learn and grow as students AND as people. This is our eighth year at High Meadows, and every year we are more impressed than the last. It is inclusive, diverse, and both educationally and socially progressive. I'm grateful to be a part of this school community.
The academic experience and values of High Meadows are superior to any other school we considered. We are very pleased.
High Meadows is what school should be! I really wish every kid could experience a High Meadows education. I cannot remotely understand the poster who said that HM wants your kid to be perfect and sit still... the kids are never sitting still. They're going on nature walks, riding ponies, swinging on the tire swing, swimming, running, paying - all while LEARNING. It's really an amazing place.
Awesome place. Great setting in the woods with excellent teachers and learning. Very active learning taking place everyday.
I may have graduated over a decade ago, but High Meadows continues to affect my life. Beyond everything scholastically being above par, and nurturing a love for nature, I am still friends with many of my former classmates. The bonds we formed there have grown into wonderful friendships. These friends are caring and non-judgemental. Though life has taken us on very different paths, every time we see each other we can pick up right where we left off. I'm sure that High Meadows is still a facilitator for relationships such as the ones I have described, and I hope that someday my children will get to have the High Meadows experience as well.
My daughter started there this year, and she wakes up every day wanting to go to school. She not only has learned a lot, but she is excited by the learning that she does there. They are inspiring her to be a life long learner. We couldn't be happier!
I cannot imagine a better, more nurturing, academic environment than High Meadows. The teachers, staff, and community have given my children invaluable opportunities and opened their minds in ways no other school could have. I am consistently amazed by the intellectual ability and mature social grace the students at High Meadows embody. It is a truly wonderful place.
Most child-center, get-ready-for-the-real-world learning environment we could find in all of metro Atlanta. International Baccalaureate with an emphasis on developing lifelong learners as whole people and global citizens. Very low teacher-student ratios, fully interdisciplinary, project- and inquiry-based curriculum, and very dedicated teachers. Wish I had gone to a school like this.
This is my daughter's 4th year at HMS, she is in 3rd grade now. HMS is perfect for us!
High Meadows is amazing. My son loves going every day. Never wants to miss a day, even if he is sick. He is always talking about what he is learning. The school doesn't want cookie cutter kids -- all the same. Each child is an individual with his/her own way of learning and communicating and it is encouraged. Every school should be like High Meadows.
High Meadows is an exceptional place for kids. The teachers are highly educated, creative and nurturing. Kids are safe and the whole staff works hard to ensure that HMS is a kind and respectful place to learn. The school is based off a "Positive Discipline" philosophy. Teachers spend a lot of time on Narratives as opposed to grades so students can work toward specific and personal goals. We have found this to be very motivating for our middle schooler. The IB curriculum encourages kids to think globally and ideas are taught across the curriculum. Kids are critical thinkers; it is something to hear a group of fourth graders talk about big issues such as pollution. At HMS kids learn to speak in front of groups with confidence and to advocate for their own needs. The campus is beautiful and students spend a lot of time outside using the space to learn, stretch and move. I love coming to school and seeing kids eating lunch in the canoe or doing math at a picnic table outside. The beauty of private schools is that they offer us choice. While HMS is offers kids a solid education, their progressive methodology may not be for everyone. That is ok. It is perfect for our daughter.
My daughter started HM in Pre-K and is starting 3rd grade. My son is entering Kindergarten and started at age 3. We are still impressed. The administrators/teachers have an open door policy. The admin spends a lot time in the classroom, which allows them to truly get to know each child. Both children have learned how to handle conflict resolution utilizing their words and encouraging them to think about the situation first. During my time in the classroom I see the educators working hands on with the children. They demonstrate respect by respecting their students. My children are completely different in their learning styles, interests, and motivation. My daughter learned how to read in Pre-K and I m looking forward to my son developing these skills this year. Over the years, their teachers have taught based on their current ability and are always finding ways to challenge them. Teachers are flexible with their lesson plans and encourage students to guide their own learning. All units are very hands on. HM encourages students to take risks in their learning and provides a safe place for students to make mistakes. We are all eagerly awaiting the start of the school year.
If your child is not PERFECT - this is not the school for you. This school expects 3 and 4 year olds to read, write, and sit perfectly still at all times. The administrator is terrible at returning phone calls and avoids giving you any real information about what they are truly looking for in a student.
This School/Camp says they are "ecofriendly," however it is littered with trash due to the lack of trash cans. There is nothing competitive at High Meadows because "everyone is a winner" and they don't want to offend a child. Also, the nurse is sub-par. She will send a child with lice or pink eye or chicken pox right back to class and "advise" the family to keep the child home. However, they do not enforce it and allow these kids to come to class with all contagious diseases. The staff yells at the kids all the time and there is a lack of respect between adult and child. There is no real world experience at High Meadows and it is not worth spending the money!!!! DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD HERE IF YOU WANT THEM TO BE SOCIABLE AND ACCEPTED IN LIFE!!!
High Meadows creates a learning environment that empowers our children to be inquisitive, articulate, confident and best of all, happy. The culture of the school is really unique and special. Respect, friendship, trust, kindness, open communication and community are its important values. I am thankful every day we found High Meadows, and I love the positive impact it has on our family. (Parent, rising 7th and 6th grades)
High Meadows School is a place for families who want their "whole child" to develop: physical, social-emotional AND academic. It amazes me how our students stand out when it comes to speaking skills, confidence and true, deep thinking. I read all these reviews and I agree that the school is very clearly not "all things" to "all people". I appreciate that! I want a place that my child feels safe and nurtured but also challenged to think more deeply and take risks with learning or making mistakes. I feel confident that he will not be humiliated for acting childish and that appropriate boundaries will be maintained. All the administrators are approachable and willing to listen. Every school has teachers that don't "soar" for every child but those are good experiences for my child to have too. My oldest child graduated from there and takes tests just fine (scoring in the 99th percentile consistently) so I don't know why someone wrote something negative about that. Why should little kids take tests? I'm thrilled that High Meadows uses authentic assessment in the Early Years. Also, research is beginning to prove how important nature is in children's lives and this is a core value for us!
High Meadows has really changed over the past three years. The school has refined all that it does amazingly well (borrowing from the IB profile) which is to create open-minded, caring, risk-taking, balanced, reflective, communicative, principled, knowledgeable, and inquiring students. At the same time they have improved on being more consistent across all class and curriculum areas with regard to discipline (all teachers are trained and us Positive Discipline), safety, and academics. It is a perfect school for educating the leaders of the 21st century.
I am actually a graduate of High Meadows from a few years back. I attended preschool through 8th grade and it is absolutely the best learning environment you can ask for. Not only do you learn above and beyond what you expect, but the teachers, staff, and students grow to be a family. High Meadows is the only place I have ever been able to be completely myself, surrounded by amazing people who really care about you and your education. The teacher-student relationships make learning so much easier, as well as the friends you make are friends you keep for a lifetime. I've never been to a school with such a sense of community as High Meadows, and where the students are excited to come to school. High Meadows expands your knowledge beyond books. It really is difficult to describe the learning, the people and the atmosphere of High Meadows because it is so unique. But if you have the opportunity to attend High Meadows and you don't take it you are missing out. Students graduate with all the skills they needed to be a successful student, and High Meadows prepares you well to take on all challenges you may encounter. I consider High Meadows to be one of the best experiences I've ever had.
High Meadows has given both of my children a well-rounded education in an environment that has taught them to care about their own learning and to think broadly about the world. The teachers love the children and are committed to High Meadows -- everyone in the school community seems to "get it" that this is a really special place and you can't find what we have here anywhere else. My children began in preschool--so for me it is always interesting to see how much families who came from elsewhere (with something to compare) especially value the school! We picked it because of the outdoors experiences, the developmentally appropriate teaching methods, the non-punitive discipline philosophy and the commitment to developing intrinsic motivation (not reward-based teaching). My younger child is still at High Meadows; my older child who graduated after 8th grade is now excelling at her private high school. We have been pleased to find the high school administration and teachers seem to really know about and respect High Meadows graduates...we have heard a lot of compliments about how well High Meadows prepares students.
High Meadows is the best school I have ever been to. I went 6th through 8th grade, and never once had a complaint about it. The teachers are nice, understanding, and helpful. The students are friendly. High Meadows helps children see beyond themselves and look at the whole world. I have yet to find a school that can this school.
