I would not recommend sending your child to Calvary Day School. They claim to be a Christian school but their values are far from Christian. My child was bullied beginning in 5th grade until present. She is in 7th grade now. The bullying became so bad that she lost weight, she had anxiety attacks and hated going to school. My husband and me had several meeting with the administration of Calvary. They did absolutely nothing!!! She was threatened, bullied in person and on social media. It all comes down to whose parents donate the most money. We pulled our child from this school. We also pulled our other child. They are now happy and thriving. We actually discovered how far they were behind academically. They would not have been prepared for college if we had left them in school at Calvary. Read other reviews. We are not the only family this has happened to. I didn't want to select any stars for a rating but my review would not register unless I put a minimum of 2 stars. Calvary deserves a zero star rating.
Calvary is a great well-rounded private school. It has great academics and a diverse range of clubs to fit a student's certain desire. The teachers ask all of the students if they understand the material before moving on. The teachers love to help the students and other students are willing to help you if you need assistance unlike SCPS (where I used to go) where the teachers were mean, the students picked on you for being gifted, and where you never actually learned. It has numerous Honors classes and sufficient AP classes. Calvary has its share of average students but also has a large number of academically 'genius' students and I love being one! Calvary is also great for it's extremely awesome missionary trips to Africa and South America! This school is also fantastic if your child is into sports because we always either place state championship or in the top three in almost every sport. It's a great place where many students excel in whatever they do! Many students get accepted into really great colleges, in fact, this year, another one of our students got accepted into MIT! Everyone at Calvary is gifted and the teachers emphasize on refining that gift and it shows!
If your child is a good athlete, this is the school for you, if not don't bother. As my child does not participate in sports, she is a nobody. Academically, she will be struggling in college.
My daughter has attended Calvary since she was 18 months old, now a freshman and honor student she has grown into an amazing person both mentally and spiritually. I am very please with the academics at this school, the school also has a great sports program, they win many state championships, I would recommend this school to anyone, I have a son that went to public schooling and I will be the first to tell anyone that the difference is unbeleiveable..if I would have known the difference when he was a child he would have gone to calvary as well..Fully recommend!
Elementary school was a positive experience. Middle school was very disappointing. The teachers care about the kids they know but don't seem interested in new students unless of course they play sports. Academically I think Calvary is falling behind. Clubs are very limited in comparison to public schools. Very limited choices for class schedules. My 2 children left Calvary to attend an area high school and I could not believe the difference. I would not recommend Calvary's middle & high school.
My daughter has attended Calvary since pre-K and is a walking testimonial of how excellent Calvary is at educating the whole person.
Calvary is an excellent school. The Pre-K was recently voted Best in Savannah for 2007-2008.
The Calvary teachers and staff care about the children, first and foremost. The personal involvement and concern astound me. Mrs. Moore (elementary principal) knows the name of every child in her elementary. She exercises care in matching children with the best teacher and genuinely wants each child to achieve his potential. I have family members who attended another private school but are transferring to Calvary because they have witnessed the positive impact this school makes on the life of my son. Several students from the junior high and high school competed at the state level science fair this year. The elementary students consistently win or place in various regional and state competitions. The high school offers a strong athletic program (state champions in baseball this year), as well as various clubs. Public service is a mandatory graduation requirement. The new state-of the art high school building will be opening in 2007.
I wouldn't have my child go anywhere else. As a parent that attended both public and private (SCDS) schools here in Savannah, education is of the upmost importance to me. My child has attended Calvary from Pre-K through 4th grade and will be attending next year. The only thing they lack in is a proper music/theater program. This is on small thing to me; however, when you take into consideration the great education, genuine concern and love for students, and overall feel that this is a ministry rather than just merely a school, the sacrifice is no great thing. Of course, my daughter gets music, theater, and dance at our Church, which balances it all out. My overall impression of the school is that they are there for the students first and foremost, not the money, connections or prestige. The arts are being worked on, I know!
I have two children in the school. They have attended since kindergarten and are now in middle and high school. The best thing I can say is that they never woke up in the morning and said they didn't want to go to school. They love school and their friends and teachers. Their test scores are great also. It is a great school - you need to send your children!
This has been my first year as a Calvary parent and I have been phenominally impressed. They have a loving and caring staff who are experts in their field. The administration is personal and caring--it truly is a family. I would recommend this school to anyone who wants an excellent education!
Principal leadership: Last year we had no principal. The current headmaster had no idea who we were. I remember one girl came to school in her pj's and he asked 'Excuse me, do you go here?' He doesnt know anybody's name. Teacher quality: My calculus teacher was the only one that knew what she was doing. the others just hand out work sheets and tell us to read from the book, that is if they could quiet us down first. Extracurricular activities: plenty of sports, nothing else except one play, no clubs. Parent involvement: They have a PTO don't know what they do. Safety and discipline: 4 years ago a girl almost got abducted, since then they put up a fence. Overall quality: in the 7 years that I went there. they put up a new gym, practice field, and a huge score board. If you want your kid to learn don't send them here.
Calvary Day School is the best private school in Savannah. There fantastic academic program and sports program and not to mention the awesome religious program they offer. I graduated from Calvary and now my daughter attends and I wouldn't send her anywhere else. She loves it very much and everyone is like family. I would reccomend Calvary to anyone looking for a good private Christian education.
Calvary is by far one of the best schools in the Savannah area. Calvary not only offered me an excellent education but helped me grow spiritually and build my character to what it is today. I was able to be very active in school while participating in varsity sports, clubs, and student government in my highschool years with Calvary. I used my knowledge and success from Calvary to build my character now at college to where im am now enjoying Varsity sports and making straight A's. I would highly recommend anyone looking for a school in the Savannah area to choose Calvary. In short the staff, the student body, and school itself is the most friedliest and proud you'll see in all of savannah.
I would not trade the education I received at Calvary for any other in the city of Savannah. It was the best place for me, and I would venture to say the best place for any student who wants the ability and opportunity to grow and learn with the help of a truly caring staff and faculty.
