I am currently a junior at this school. I really like it. Its just sometimes I wonder if the students want to really leaned. I had some really great teachers since I been there. I just don't understand how an outstanding school like shs. Everything is so divided. Most of the students dont want to learn and there officer are not really protesting this school having people come in and out as they feel.
I am a formal student of SHS. I attended SHS for 2 years. This school is magnificent. The teachers take the time out to fully explain everything (well at least the ones I had ie. Ms. Childs (Spanish), Ms. Calhoun (English), Mr. Weaver (History) Ms. English (Math) Ms. Thomas (Algebra), ) Saftey wasnt an issue because the environment itself is safe but there could be more monitoring of who can come in and out the school as that may one day become an issue. I love the school my family has generations of graduates 03,04,05,06,07 and hopefully 09!
As a parent, I have been very pleased with SHS. The teaching staff, principal and administrators have all been very willing to help in my daughter's education growth. They have several extracurricular activities.
Stephenson High School is a good school, but I agree with those others that feel it is not living up to its potential. The school is nestled in a suburban middle class community that ranges in affluence. Teachers, parents, administrators and the community need to come together in order for the school to fully realize its greatness. Some apathy can be detected in varying degrees among all of those groups. I do think the principal and administrators bear the greatest responsibility for the school's 'culture' - meaning its discipline, teacher accountability, high intellectual/academic standards, etc. I don't see that happening as it should. Most of the students do go on to higher education and that should be highlighted more. Instead the success of the sports and band programs tend to garner most of the spotlight.
I graduated from SHS in 2006. I love my H.S. I visit often my teachers and those who attend the school will appreciate the school once they graduate. So many happy memories.
My son is basically enjoying his sophmore year at Stevenson High. Personally, as a parent, I worry if the schoolwork is enough to prepare him for college. The teachers are good but don't seem to expect a lot from the students and adjust the workload accordingly. And either the office staff does not want to be bothered, go out the way to be rude to people, or just downright incompetent.
Stephenson High School is a good school that is emerging to become a great school. As soon as the administrators, teachers, students, parents, and all stakeholders get on the same page concerning children, the 'greatness' will show up.
Stephenson high school is a great school that has a lot of opportunities for students. They excel in all sports. The best athletes around!
I am very disappointed in Stephenson this year. I have had two other children that have graduated from Stephenson High and I've loved every minute. Over the past few years I have notice a change in Administration and staff. If you have a problem, you can forget it. You can never talk to anyone. Some of the teachers have a nonchalant attitude about everything. The Administration is terrible; trying to get one of them to call you back is like pulling teeth from a baby. I am very dissatisfied with the overall moral support that you receive from Stephenson. Have more patients with the students and their parents lets work together. The children can t do it by themselves.
Stephenson deserves a 3 1/2 but has 5 star potential. The school still has more children than it should, but that's a problem throughout DeKalb County. The principal and teaching staff are very capable. The counseling staff and level of parental involvement is keeping this school from living up to its potential. My son graduated in 2007 and as I prepare for my next son to enter in 2009, I'll be working with the school administration and PTSA to build the same level of enthusiasm for academic excellence that is enjoyed by the music and sports programs.
